Causes: Arts & Culture, Theater
Mission: To create and produce new, experimental performances for theater that are written and directed by young jean lee in collaboration with company members from diverse backgrounds. We make shows that deal with uncomfortable major issues such as race and religion in such hilariously disorienting ways that they stick in people's minds and challenge them to think rather than shutting them down or reaffirming their pre-existing beliefs.
Programs: In 2014, young jean lees theater company developed a new play and also toured existing work. Straight white men enjoyed productive residencies at spaceworks nyc and columbia university, and then made its us premiere at the wexner center for arts (ohio) in april 2014. Untitled feminist show, which premiered in january 2012, toured to hamburg (germany), san francisco, toronto, in 2014, and will tour in 2015 to amsterdam and calgary. Were gonna die has toured constantly since it premiered in 2011. In 2013-2014, it was performed at lincoln center, the wexner center for arts (ohio), and ucla center for performance (los angeles). In summer of 2014, the shipment, in its fifth season of touring, played londons prestigious lift festival. In addition to its theatrical work, 2014 saw young jean lees theater company branching out further into the film world. Young jeans first ever short film here come the girls, which premiered at the locarno film festival in switzerland in 2013, was selected for the 2014 short film program at sundance film festival and 2014 brooklyn academy of music (bam) cinemafest. These efforts, in tandem with her theater work, have allowed young jean lee to expand artistic boundaries and to gain an unprecedentedly wide audience, while remaining true to her mission. In 2014, we reached over 15,000 audience members, and continued to develop our audience in new york city, in preparation for the new york premiere of straight white men in 2015. In 2015, we hope to strengthen our individual donor base, increase our fundraising, tour straight white men to graz (austria), paris, berlin, and toronto, and continue to grow a larger social media presence.
