Results: For 23 years, Words Alive has provided access to relevant and quality books, shared reading experiences, and a connection to reading that lays the foundation for continued success. Started as a program supporting teenage mothers on a journey through reading, our work has grown to bridge the gap in access to education for underserved children ages 0-18 and families.
In the 2020-2021 academic year, our core programming served 4,125 students and families in San Diego facing extraordinary circumstances such as homelessness, poverty, foster care, abuse, impact by the juvenile justice system, and teen pregnancy. We collaborated with 99+ schools and community organizations to reach these youth and families.
We also train education affiliates and parent educators in effective reading engagement to build capacity and expertise among partner organizations and our community’s families.
Target demographics: Children and Families facing extraordinary challenges
Direct beneficiaries per year: 4125 Students and their Families
Geographic areas served: San Diego County
Programs: Early childhood workshops for low-income parents and toddlers, weekly read aloud sessions in Title I elementary classrooms and nonprofit and community sites, and book group style sessions with at-risk teens.
