Causes: Arts & Culture, Cultural & Ethnic Awareness
Mission: To preserve and protect the history, culture, language, practices, and traditions of the lakota sioux people and to educate the public regarding the lakota sioux culture.
Programs: Outcomes for the arbor & ceremony house portion of the program included architectural drawings for the ceremony arbor, upgrades of electrical service and potable water utilities to the site, delivery of a construction and vocational skills training program for 65 youth and adult volunteers including more than one thousand volunteer hours, construction and refurbishment of the ceremony arbor and cook house, landscape and tree planting, and foundation element layout for the future ceremony house. Education program outcomes included formal teachings in 15 cities around the united states and canada with participation of 405 student learners and 3,500 learner contact hours, cataloguing and archiving more than five hundred hours of music, language and customs in digital media format, pre-production of a 10-track audio cd of traditional lakota songs with a companion teaching booklet for a lakota language arts curriculum. Support of the 2017 sundance provided for the successful performance of these ceremonies. Conducted during the second weeks of july, ceremonies involved the participation of 40 dancers and 400 family members, elders, musicians, and support persons, respectively. Participants came from all over the united states and canada, representing multiple tribal, band, and family affiliations.
