Programs: The united way of cayuga county, inc. Is a not-for-profit corporation founded in 1922, whose mission is to increase the organized capacity of people to care for one another. The organization is affiliated with united way worldwide, an international organization. The organization is governed by a volunteer board of directors. The organization funds the following programs: -education: focus for this impact area is helping children and youth succeed in school, work and life. Funding in this area supports programs that focus on long-term solutions or address opportunity gaps in the cradle-to-career pipeline. These programs focus on building confidence and skills for life and include youth mentoring, youth recreation and help for youth in crisis which leads to preventing delinquency. Other programs include literacy, preschool and afterschool programs, scouting, and performance arts. -health: focus for this impact area is to ensure that children, adults and seniors improve their physical, emotional and mental well-being. Funding in this area works toward building a healthier, more resilient community by promoting healthy eating, physical activity, and expanding access to quality health care. Funded programs support programs for caregivers, families with members in the armed forces, counseling, blood services, abuse prevention and substance abuse treatment, and personal care needs for the most vulnerable populations in our community. -income/financial well-being: efforts are directed at empowering people with the tools and skills such as job training and financial wellness to help them get on stable financial ground. The result is people in the community have both improved financial stability and self-sufficiency. Included in this area are homeless shelters and family transition programs. Safety net: strategies in this area help empower cayuga county residents to live healthy, prosperous lives by creating opportunities and removing barriers. Partners in this area help stabilize families in times of crisis as well as provide basic human needs such as food, shelter and safety. Funded programs include comprehensive emergency assistance, energy assistance, resource assistance, transportation and counseling.
other programs community response fund: this is a special fund which provides immediate funds to partner agencies if there is a crisis situation withing a funded program and/or a new program is developed to address and emergent need. Partner agencies are encouraged to collaborate with other not-for-profit agencies for this funding. Cah (creating assets, savings and hope) for cayuga county: cah is a united way initiative that offers free tax preparation for low to moderate income individuals and families. Irs certified volunteers help these households build stronger financial futures by preparing their new york state and federal tax returns free of charge.
