Tyler Type 1 Diabetes Foundation is a great organization. I have been Type One diabetic for 34 years. When I was a child growing up with this disease, I thought that I was all alone. Tyler Type One helps children in our community realize that they are not alone. Families living with this disease can get together and share ideas and just let each other know that they know what they are going through. The monthly meeting provide a great time to learn new things on the horizon for diabetes care and to share stories. Tyler Type One holds diabetes classes for the families of newly diagnosed children and their families that provide great resources on how to handle the changes in everyday life that diabetes causes. I highly recommend Tyler Type One Diabetes Foundation to anyone that is type one diabetic or who has family and friends living with this disease.
Tyler Type One is an incredible organization that reaches out to newly diagnosed families as well as being a support group for all insulin dependent families. When you hear the news that your child will forever be required to give himself shots just to live for the rest of their lives and check their blood 8-10 times and day and if he makes a mistake it can be life threatening --- You are in shock and overwhelmed. Tyler Type One continues to serve through educating families, connecting families, and providing resources! I could not have imagined how alone my son would now feel without this amazing organization to encourage and educate him. They are also doing an amazing job to raise awareness in our community about the realities of being insulin dependent for life.
Since my mother contracted Type 1 diabetes with adult on-set of juvenile diabetes and passed away in her early sixties, I have remained aware & sensitive to insulin-dependant people of all ages. After hearing about Tyler Type 1 Foundation, I educated myself in what they do to educate and assist the parents, family members and care-givers of those just discovering they have this awful disease. I am excited and encouraged to see hope being given to the hopeless and fears being greatly reduced through Tyler Type 1 members giving a special 'touch' of hope through education and regular support meetings
I had never been exposed to Type 1 Diabetes until I met my wife and her son. I knew that there was much to learn and a great deal of responsibility when it comes to the care of my step son. The Tyler Type 1 folks have been a wealth of information and tools for helping me learn what is needed to help care my step son. There is a lot more that I need to learn and I know that they have the knowledge, resources, and contacts to help. I can't thank them enough!
I am 9 years old and I was told that I had diabetes when I was three. I remember not feeling good and I can remember spending a week in the hospital with IV's in me having to get fluid and insulin. This was not fun. I didn't feel good and my family was very sad. I was scared. My mom was scared. My uncle and grandma were there and they were scared too!
I found out that I would have to get shots every day just so I could eat food. If I eat anything that has more than 5 carbs, I have to have insulin so my blood sugar doesn't get high. The only time I get to eat without getting a shot is if my blood sugar is low. Usually if my reading is below 70 my mom will let me have something to eat, like a box of raisins, or a small banana or spoon full of peanut butter. Sometimes I get to eat chocolate or candy. That's usually good :)
I am glad we started going to Tyler Type One Meetings because I got to meet other kids with type one diabetes too.
My nephew Cody was diagnosed in 2005 with juvinile diabetes in 2005 and it was very sad to see. My sister and I had to learn alot in a short perion of time, carb counting, shots and understanding. I started attending Tyler Type 1 with my sister Colleen a couple years ago and what an eye opener. I never realized how many people it affected and the different tools now available. Even though my sister lives in Tyler now and I in Carthage I still plan to attend Tyler Type 1 meetings occasionally
to keep updated through the very informative lectures and talks. I encourage anyone with Type 1 or 2 diabetes to attend these meetings and especially if you have a child living with Diabetes.

My son was diagnosed with Type One in 2005. It was a terrifying experience and I had nowhere to go and nobody to talk to. We were referred to UTMB Galveston and the drives down there were very hard on a single mom and newly diagnosed 3 year old. We were so happy when we found Dr. Luis Casas in Tyler in 2008. We were even more excited when he introduced us to Tyler Type One! Even though we had three years experience under our belts this was the first time my son had EVER been around another child with the same disease he had... wow! A whole new attitude was developed... for the first time since his diagnosis, he did not feel alone! What a gift to be able to meet with these people (parents and children) who know how you feel, what you're going through, and open themselves up to share their knowledge and lives with you.
I just remarried and my husband and his two children now attend the meetings and we will be taking the next Diabetes 101 class together so that everyone has a full understanding of how this illness effects everyday life and what can be done to improve it!
We have been blessed to participate with this group of people and I hope that I can help by volunteering with the Tyler Type One organization.
My son was diagnosed almost a year ago. The TTO was ready to help me through this difficult diagnoses. I thought I didn't need a support group or need to know anyone else who had this disease. Let me tell you I was wrong!! I called someone from the TTO 2 days after his diagnoses and they were ready to help me. Still unsure if I needed them or not I talked with them. It took a few months later before I decided to go to a meeting. It has been the best decision I could have ever made. We have come to know so many wonderful people and families. The first time he got sick they were there. It was at night and they stayed up with me on the computer asking me questions, reminding me of things I needed to do. Now that it has been almost a year I have in return helped out other families. This is a scary disease and you must be educated to care for you child/children. Speaking of educated they offer FREE Diabetes Education Classes to the public!! These classes cost around $1000.00 each and they provide them to the child, parents, grandparents, caregivers for FREE. My son looks forward to going to the meeting each month and visiting with other kids just like them. As for me its a time for the kids to visit and parents too. I can feel safe for my child to be in another room for 1 1/2 hours being supervised by an adult who can take care of a diabetic child. My mind is at ease during this time. I don't have to worry about him dropping to low and not taking care of himself. No matter what is on our schedule when it comes to the day of the meeting everything is put on hold so we can attend! We love the TTO and recommend it to any person/family living in the Tyler area to check them out. To know you are not alone and you have support is a wonder blessing. I thought I could do it alone but I can't! We all need the help of each other and that is what the Tyler Type One does! Support for each of us!
My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last year, and it was a sickening blow to my family. Suddenly my daughter's very survival depended on our success in managing her blood sugar, which is a minute-by-minute activity hinging on our mastery of the endocrine system - something even most medical professionals don't understand. I was completely overwhelmed! But before the day was out, I had received two phone calls from Tyler Type 1 volunteers offering support. They knew what I was going through and were ready to help at any hour of the day or night. Within a few days they had provided us a basket full of snacks and goodies that were appropriate for my daughter's condition. They followed up on our progress and answered questions I thought were silly without making me feel dumb. When I attended my first TTO meeting and they learned that I needed a glucose monitor, they had one in my hands (with test strips!) before I went home. And over the course of the next few months, they connected me with resources that have proven invaluable to managing my daughter's condition. My husband, daughter, and I attended Diabetes 101 (a class TTO provides for FREE! ) and learned a ton from the diabetes educator - things we are still using all these months later. I speak almost daily to people I met through TTO; there is tremendous emotional benefit to knowing that others share my experience. TTO offers hope in an often hopeless situation.
I have seen how dedicated the volunteers at TT1 are and I hold them in deep respect. Having a Type 1 grandson who went through his early years without such a support group, I know how much this means to everyone associated with the disease.
As a provider of Diabetic patient's all over the state of Texas we have seen a great need for this type of support group for years. We have patient's that tell us when they were diagnosed their mother was given an orange and a syringe and told to practice for an hour. Then gave their child the first shot of insulin. Having Tyler Type One here means everything to a newly diagnosed family or an uniformed one. Every third Thursday of each month they have somthing fresh and new to educate and inform these mothers, fathers and their loved ones. Hopefully soon we have more Tyler Type One support groups throughout Texas. Thank you so much Tyler Type One for all you do.
TT1 is wonderful! I don't know what I would have done without them upon my little boy's diagnosis last year. I was so overwhelmed. Margie and Sarah visited us in the hospital and brought baskets of necessary items and snacks. It was such a blessing! Just talking to them for awhile was such a comfort. Also, I know that if I need anything from them any time, all I have to do is make a phone call. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Tyler Type 1! God bless you all!

This oranization was essential in helping not only my daughter handle her diabetes more suffiently but our whole family as well. They gave us the strength to realize it could be done. They offer a monthly support meeting as well as education for family members. We are truly greatful to have found them. We love TT1!!!
