Review for Tyler Type One Diabetes Foundation, Tyler, TX, USA

Rating: 5 stars

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last year, and it was a sickening blow to my family. Suddenly my daughter's very survival depended on our success in managing her blood sugar, which is a minute-by-minute activity hinging on our mastery of the endocrine system - something even most medical professionals don't understand. I was completely overwhelmed! But before the day was out, I had received two phone calls from Tyler Type 1 volunteers offering support. They knew what I was going through and were ready to help at any hour of the day or night. Within a few days they had provided us a basket full of snacks and goodies that were appropriate for my daughter's condition. They followed up on our progress and answered questions I thought were silly without making me feel dumb. When I attended my first TTO meeting and they learned that I needed a glucose monitor, they had one in my hands (with test strips!) before I went home. And over the course of the next few months, they connected me with resources that have proven invaluable to managing my daughter's condition. My husband, daughter, and I attended Diabetes 101 (a class TTO provides for FREE! ) and learned a ton from the diabetes educator - things we are still using all these months later. I speak almost daily to people I met through TTO; there is tremendous emotional benefit to knowing that others share my experience. TTO offers hope in an often hopeless situation.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

...the management of my child's life-threatening disease.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

...get them as much funding and publicity as possible, because they are ready and willing to help even more people if they only have the resources to do it.

How would you describe the help you got from this organization?

Life-changing

How likely are you to recommend this organization to a friend?

Definitely

How do you feel you were treated by this organization?

Very Well

How did you find this group?

My doctor told me about them on the day of my daughter's diagnosis.

What, if any, change in your life has this group encouraged?

I have been encouraged to educate myself about type one diabetes: to become my child's primary healthcare provider, because this disease manifests itself differently in each patient, and nobody else can know my daughter's particular case as well as she and I can. Now, instead of being lazy and neglecting her disease, I am making progress toward controlling it. She is much healthier as a result!

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2011

Role:  Client Served & I received support from Tyler Type One and have been able to keep my child alive and well for almost a year since her diagnosis!.
