Mission: Turnaround's mission is to build a community free of violence by working with adults and children affected by intimate partner and sexual violence to address their needs and prevent further violence through advocacy and education.
Programs: Counseling program: the agency's masters level trauma therapists work with adult and child victims of domestic violence, sexual assault/abuse and sex trafficking, to help them understand and address the emotional and social consequences of abuse. Survivors are assisted in developing coping skills to manage past trauma and reduce its impact on their lives. Survivors are guided through safety planning and provided with psycho-education about the dynamics of domestic violence and or/sexual assault in order to reduce the chances of re-victimization. The therapists use art, play, and traditional talk therapy to meet the varying therapeutic needs of victims.
anti-trafficking program: the anti-trafficking program provides comprehensive, trauma-informed care from emergency response to ongoing services for survivors of sex trafficking ages 12-30. Each survivor works with a case manager to identify and develop a goal and action plan in the following areas: safe shelter, education, work, health (mental, physical, medical) and personal. In addition to direct services to survivors, the agency provides training to service providers and professionals regarding sex trafficking.
victim advocacy program: the victim advocacy program provides immediate and ongoing services to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in both baltimore city and baltimore county. Advocated provide crisis response, safety planning, resources, and support during forensic exams to the victim and their families. Advocates also provide follow-up and ongoing, or "vertical" advocacy as victims go through the criminal justice system and/or work to rebuild their lives. Advocacy increases victims' access to and engagement in the criminal justice system and other community resources and decreases vulnerability and risk of further victimization.
community education and training program: conducts 40 presentations a month to adults, children, and the community at large especially those that are underserved and at high risk for violence. The department works closely with local schools and other organizations to work with children and teens on ways to prevent violence and raise community awareness of violence. They train professionals in a variety of disciplines of ways to identify victims of sexual violence and ways to work with them. Emergency shelter/transitional housing program: provides housing for individuals/families impacted by sexual violence for a period of six months to two years. During the time the families are in the program, they are working on removing any barriers to establishing their own household. This can include safety planning, job training, coping with the symptoms of trauma, and/or reducing existing debt. The emergency shelter is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for victims in danger of physical harm. Abuser intervention program: a twenty-six week psycho-educational curriculum that addresses interpersonal violence and abuse. Participants are provided with education about abuse and must demonstrate an understanding of the information through class discussion and homework. The program is available to both court ordered and voluntary participants.
