Causes: Animals, Wildlife Sanctuaries
Mission: African wildlife preservation
Programs: 2017 was another successful year for the tony fitzjohn george adamson african wildlife preservation trust. We had many positives, two sad losses of a baby rhino and elephant, and overall, there were many steps forward for the trust working in the mkomazi national park and mkomazi rhino sanctuary. Below are highlights from 2017. 1. Replacement and update of the first 15km of fence line in the mkomazi rhino sanctuary, and a 'bulls only' section separating the males for breeding purposes. 2. Expansion of external fence line to allow for more optimal vegetation for feeding3. New security measures including internal wireless telecommunications system has been installed triangulating the position of a wide range of small, solar powered lorawan based-sensors installed on barrier gates, vehicles and motorcycles in the rhino sanctuary, also transmitters for rhino horns to keep track of rhino. 4. Siting and building a dam in norbanda to create a water source for migrating elephants. 5. Two rhino calves born in 20176. Two new tracker dogs and training of dog handlers for rhino sanctuary. Also 400 tsetse targets put in that are replaced every 4 months. 7. Water tanker purchased that doubles the amount of water able to be trucked in. With the greater number of rhino and hunting dogs, and supporting the employees in the park, more water is needed and this greater capacity reduces the number of trips to bring water in. 8. 830 students came through environmental education program in rhino sanctuary. 9. 138 students in enrolled in vocational training centre.
