Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: OUR MISSION To Rescue at risk mustangs and burros from across America As well as providing a home and freedom for these horses we aim to increase public awareness of the mustang issues, showcase herd dynamics, and the general and historical value of America's wild horses through media and social networks. Skydog Ranch hopes to show that wild horses can co-exist on the open range in ecological balance with many species of wildlife, and demonstrate how to best manage land to increase carrying capacity and reverse range degradation. We also aim for Skydog Sanctuary to be a place of peace and healing for our volunteers in both Oregon and California who are able to come and spend time with the wild ones in nature and be around these beautiful rescued horses.

Results: To date, Skydog cares for 90+ mustangs and burros saved from killpens, auctions and dire situations who now run free in family groups on our 9000 acres ranch in Oregon or our two ranches in CA.

Target demographics: Wild mustangs & burros or formerly wild mustangs who are in dire situations, kill pens or auction yards.

Direct beneficiaries per year: 60+ threatened mustangs to find safety and life - either on our ranch or paid for bail/transportation/medical services for mustangs to go to known alternative rescues.

Geographic areas served: Prineville, OR, Malibu, CA and Mariposa, CA.

Programs: Skydog Ranch employs people in recovery who are actively working 12 step programs as well as military veterans as we believe that they and the horses form a unique bond, both having come from situations that tested them emotionally and physically.

Skydog Sanctuary is wonderful. They take in unwanted horses who would otherwise go to slaughter. They take problem horses that have been abused and give them a place of peace and freedom so they feel safe. They try to keep families together and go out of their way to search for other family members . This place is awesome and really cares about the horses

Beautiful sanctuary that rescues and advocates for the wild mustangs being rounded up in our country. I'm honored to support them in their work. I look forward to my many years of following and supporting them. There is so much work to be done for our wild horses. Their stories must be told. Claire and her sanctuary does an exemplary job in doing that and more.

I have loved America’s wild horses since I was a child, and my heart broke when I discovered they were being driven off their range, and disposed of. Then I discovered the fantastic Skydog Sanctuary, a large piece of heaven-on-Earth for rescued mustangs and occasionally other abused horses. Watching the videos and reading the posts of broken souls being mended and blossoming, of broken families being reunited in freedom and loving care just lifts my spirits, no matter how low they were!
I happily donate monthly, and whenever I can in between, because Clare is constantly creating new miracles of rescue and rehabilitation for so many deserving horses!

Skydog Sanctuary is a gathering place for those of us who love and respect wild mustangs. Skydog Sanctuary provides us the opportunity to have a small part in protecting these icons of the American West. I have strong feelings about the treatment of wild mustangs and their removal from their rightful homes on the vast open ranges, often by inhumane methods.

Unfortunately, that right to live freely is infringed upon constantly by those seeking more range for personal gain. "Control," (by diminishing herd size or outright destruction of whole herds of wild mustangs), is their focus, not protection. I'm reminded of how the Native Americans were pushed aside relentlessly, as more land was demanded for settlers. We are doing the same with wild mustangs. Their right to exist on Public Grazing Land, is not considered relevant by those in charge of the roundups, who sell these mustangs to often questionable persons who then financially gain by re-selling to countries who will turn a beautiful mustang into meat.

Skydog Sanctuary is about integrity, courage, purpose and willingness to do that "hard thing," which is to stand strong between those who are rounding up, terrifying and keeping penned until sale, these beautiful wild creatures of our American West. Skydog Sanctuary has the heart, soul and commitment to provide safety from depredation for wild mustangs. They educate those willing to listen. They willingly work endless hours to scout for mustangs, even track members of specific wild herds so they may be reunited, then bid and when successful, they complete that process by transporting the mustangs to one of their facilities. It is always a celebrated homecoming!

It doesn't stop there though! Skydog has protocols in place to provide protection for their staff and the many volunteers committed to this cause. And care via best practices for the wild mustangs themselves. Protocols which will inform the Skydog staff and give understanding of each mustang, provide specific and excellent veterinarian care, and just as necessary, a calming atmosphere to replace the frantic experiences and horrendous roads these horses have traveled to arrive at a safe Sanctuary.

I am 71 years old but not your average "Nana." Just recently retiring, but best job ever was the 14 years at a national non-profit which provided (and still provides) assistance dogs for people with disabilities. It's eye opening and heart fulfilling to be a part of the great work these non-profits do. It changed my outlook on what's truly important in life. Skydog lets me be involved in my own small way, to make this world a better place. I wholeheartedly support them!

This is a wonderful sanctuary with impeccable mission statement that is carefully and expertly executed. They save and give freedom to so many mustangs, and in sharing their stories, educate people on the plight of the American Mustang, resulting in many more ethical adoptions and pressure to change the cruel laws and standards affecting these beautiful creatures.

Skydog Sanctuary is a charity that has truly changed my life - by changing my awareness and caring for the plight of America's wild horses and burros. I've always supported animal charities and admire those who dedicate their lives to these causes. The Skydog team is more than exceptional when it comes to dedication and focus on saving these sacred animals and going way beyond that. They are educators about these American icons, they fuel support for other sanctuaries and rescues and they work hard to advocate on behalf of them all. I've also watched as they work miracles with the most abused, the most shattered mustangs... and then watched these incredible animals thrive and live their best lives. The lives they were meant to... running free and being safe at the same time. Skydog is wonderful and inspiring and I'm proud to be a monthly sponsor for their incredible work!

I believe our Mustangs are icons that must be saved...they are, after all, OUR horses. Skydog has won a monthly donation from me because they too value these precious reminders of all that is good about our nation...freedom, being able to live your life as you wish, and the American spirit. Skydog communicates constantly about what they are doing so I know exactly how my hard-earned dollars are being spent. I recommend Skydog to any friends looking for a sanctuary to donate to.

Skydog is such a generous caring group I’m in awe of. They provide sanctuary for horses that would have no hope without them. Many time saving them from terrible abuse, trauma, and slaughter. I love Skydog for also advocating for the horses they can’t save and the ones still wild as well as educating the public on wild horses, horse abuse, and the BLMs land management tactics. All while staying classy and professional with the opposition. They are a wonderful needed group in the horse community and an inspiration for all. They have been such a personal inspiration that I plan to adopt my own wild mustang in a few years when I retire to a plot of land of mine.

Sanctuary- a place of refuge and protection. This is what Skydog is and so much more. Many of Skydog saves were abused, starved, cast out as garbage, non adoptable, misunderstood wild Mustangs and Burros. Beautiful innocent animals ripped from their homeland, families and friends. Some of the stories are so heart wrenching its hard to grasp it all. Seeing the pictures of the Mustangs and Burros before they land at Skydog is not for the faint of heart. BUT then we get to witness miracles take place. These castaways start to flourish and blossom. Each Mustang or Burro is given individual care for THEIR needs. Skydog does not use the "one size fits all" approach but rather carefully studying what needs to happen for that One to reach their full healing potential, inside and out. Its amazing to watch in fact its remarkable!! Everyday I can't wait to see the videos shared of the transformations taking place and hearing Clare call each of their names out. It's priceless.
Also Clare makes every effort to reunite families. She goes over and beyond to keep families together and works hard looking for family members that were separated. Seeing the horses reunite after being torn apart makes me love Skydog even more. I have the highest regard for Clare and the Skydog team and proudly donate and sponsor every month. Being able to support Skydog blesses our family so much. We are a part of something good and wonderful. Skydog changes lives. Not only for the rescues but for all of us on the journey with them.

Skydog Sanctuary is one of those, unfortunately, very rare things - a true equine sanctuary that is both responsibly and compassionately run. The equine world is rife with faux rescues. Skydog stays true to their mission and successfully manages the delicate balance between responding to horses in need while maintaining the integrity and financial viability of the sanctuary. Whenever one donates to Skydog one can be secure in knowing that the funds will be put to good use for the benefit of the horses. The facilities are an equine paradise where the physical and mental health of the horses are attended to with assiduous, daily care and attention to detail. I spend a fair amount of time investigating, tracking and publicizing bad horse rescues and I cannot adequately praise Skydog enough. They are an exemplary non-profit in every respect and the health and happiness of the horses they serve are the best demonstration of just how good they are.

This non-profit is an example to all others. Sky Dog gives their rescued mustangs and burros a second chance at freedom and a life without asks or expectations. They can just be wild. Sky Dog is constantly keeping their patrons up to date, always genuine I. Their gratitude and always steadfast in their efforts. I feel like I know each of the horses and burros personally and have fell in love with everyone of these magnificent creatures who have been forgotten, abused or discarded in the past. I’m so honored to be a part of the supporters of Sky Dog. I hope this review increases the awareness of the American Mustangs and Burros who have helped humans for centuries . It is our time to give back to them.

Skydog Sanctuary is heaven on earth for the mostly wild mustangs and donkeys that are lucky enough to call it their forever home! Clare and crew work tirelessly to rescue mustangs from killpens and abuse situations and reunite families that have been separated by round ups. Skydog returns these amazing horses (& donkeys) to health and provides them 100s of beautiful acres on which to roam again. Additionally, Skydog is a great way to learn about wild mustangs and the failures of the Bureau of Land Management to protect them. Pass the SAFE Act.

I have been donating to Skydog Sanctuary for the last two years, I am never surprised at the the lenghts this sanctuary will go to, to search the Blm Corrals, for horses that they have branded as lame, and have no shot at being adopted. She looks for horses and donkeys who are in desperate situations some have been sent to a kill pen or some other deplorable place where they are starved neglected or are sale authority horses that are being loaded onto trucks to Mexico for slaughter. .Or sometimes if someone reaches out to her because they have a horse who longs to just be a wild horse and she will take them as well. It doesn't end there then the process of getting these horses hauled to quarintine (If need be ) A Vetenarian Hospital because they are starved and need evaluation to see if the animal can even be saved if they give her the slighest bit of hope she will spend and do whatever it takes to give that animal a shot at a good life. She provides whatever they need from the day they land in her care Once the horse is cleared for travel she goes to get them or her staff and she brings them to skydog if they still need healing time she provides them the comfort a barn where they continue to heal until they are ready to be released with a herd that she feels is the fit for that horse. These wild horses elder horses and donkey's are seen throughout the year from the Vet. and the Ferrier for their maintence they are well feed have streams to drink and they get to roam thousands of acres of land under the constant supervision of Claire Staples and her staff where they never have to worry about clanging gates and helicopters coming to hurt them . This is one of the most dedicated Sanctuaries I have had the pleasure to help with donations for the well being and safety of the wild mustangs they deserve every donation they get and more. Claire and Staff will move heaven and earth to save the Wild Mustangs and the donkey's They are # 1 in my eyes and many others Here theese animals truely get a soft landing and a another chance at life....

Skydog Sanctuary. Where separated families are reunited, where the starved are given food, comfort, and restored to health, where mares are given the opportunity to stay with their young forever and where beaten and scarred horses learn to trust and be safe. That's Skydog sanctuary.

Their mission is to right the wrongs that have been done to mustangs and give them a safe berth and a forever home. They are fulfilling that mission and then some. Burros also know the peace that comes from living at Skydog. Skydog is the better face of humanity in the care and treatment of these mustangs that is presented to the world. They are the example of what all wild horses and burros deserve.

Every contribution goes to the betterment of the mustangs, burros, and other horses in dire need. They save, they protect, they nurture.

I live near Skydog Malibu and am an avid horse lover. I had learned of Skydog and Clare's incredible dedication and efforts to rescue, rehabilitate and allow wild horses and burros to stay wild at her sanctuaries and I began to follow them on social media. The individual stories of these animals and the abuse and neglect they've endured are always shared and when you donate to Skydog you feel connected to each and every one of them, your not just a donor. Clare consistently provides updates and information as well as full transparency of her organization and is quick to respond in a timely manner when you contact her. However, I am most appreciative of the opportunity Clare and her staff had provided me to visit Skydog and meet the horse I sponsored. When my sponsored horse got sick, Clare reached out to me immediately and allowed me to visit her and her filly one last time before she passed away. It was truly a bittersweet experience, which Clare and her staff did not have to afford me with their busy schedule but, one which I will never forget. I am forever grateful for the work they do on behalf of horses and burros and highly recommend getting to know them and their tireless efforts to save as many as they can! Please support Skydog!!

I have been a volunteer and supporter of Skydog Sanctuary for two years. I have visited their Oregon location to volunteer several times and have witnessed first hand the amazing transformations that occur between when a horse or donkey first arrive, scared and possibly sick or injured, to when they return to health and freedom. It is an absolutely amazing thing to get to witness and be a part of. All of the animals at Skydog are given the utmost respect and care. They get to enjoy the absolute best life, living free to roam on thousands of acres while also benefiting from human care to keep them healthy and happy for as long as possible. My first trip out there to volunteer happened to be at the same time 4 orphaned foals arrived from the BLM corrals following a roundup. Some of them were injured, including Sugar who is in the photos below. The first was from her first day when she immediately received urgently needed vet care for a severe wound and the second is from about a year later. She and the other foals are now two years old, living their best lives with a herd of friends at Skydog. Playful and happy and full of life. There is no doubt in my mind that if Sugar had not gone to Skydog, she would not be alive today. I am so grateful for all of the beautiful lives they have saved and continue to save.

This sanctuary goes above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of abused, neglected and traumatized wild horses, donkeys and even some domestic horses. They are educating the public as to the plight of the horses, both domestic and wild, in the slaughter pipeline and Kill pens. Skydog is also very committed to passing the Safe Act H.R. 961 and S. 2006 to stop the transportation of horses over the borders to Mexico and Canada to be slaughtered for human consumption.

They are also very much involved in reuniting wild horse families to live their lives together as they were meant to be on public lands.

I first came across Skydog on Facebook and was amazed at lengths they go to, to save and maintain the health of these magnificent horses. It’s heartbreaking that Mustangs are first removed their home and family and all they know, only to be eventually given to humans who then treat them horridly. Skydog saves these souls and gives them back their lives and shows them that there is love and kindness still, and they get to finish their lives in heaven on earth.
I gladly donate to this sanctuary, even with a cut in pay and reduced hours due to COVID, the beautiful Skydog horses and the beautiful Skydog people are all deserving of what little I can offer.

During this time of COVID and political upheaval, my spirits always get an immediate lift when I view a posting from Skydog Sanctuary on Patreon. Each story about how a wild horse is saved from a terrible life confined in crowded corrals or, worse, sold to a slaughter buyer moves my heart and makes me so grateful. I often get teary just reading how a horse that has been mistreated or has become shut down finds a new beginning at Skydog. Nothing is asked of these horses. They can be free again with space to run for miles. Often Skydog finds the families of these horses and reunites them so a former stallion again has his mares with him. Skydog makes every effort to make sure each horse or donkey joins a herd with compatible animals so they have friends around them. I so enjoy watching the stories of these individual animals from when they are first rescued to their introduction at Skydog and their rehabilitation until they are as close as possible to living the life they were meant to live. Thank you to Clare and all the folks at Skydog for doing what you do, and for giving us on Patreon a chance to be a part of it.

I started following Skydog on facebook and fell in love with their objectives and their goals for rescuing mustangs. The first time I was introduced to mustangs was at a mustang magic function in Fort Worth, Texas and I fell in love with the program. I then saw the documentary made by a Texas Aggie where he and a few of his friends adopted mustangs and trained them and went on one hell of a trail ride from the Texas border all the way to the Canadian border. These are great outcomes for these iconic horses. Some mustangs are captured and go on to good programs and good lives in captivity with good trainers and good horseman. Others aren't so lucky. They end up in kill pens and in the hands of people who abuse them. Long story short, a lot of our mustangs end up in the wrong hands and need to be rescued from the rescuers and the government roundups and holding pens they are subjected too. Skydog Sanctuary is dedicated to rescuing and safely caring for these mustangs at their sanctuary. Their dedication and knowledge to this cause is above and beyond. I don't have a lot of money to contribute to nonprofits, but Skydog is so deserving of the dollars I can contribute. I love seeing the updates and contributing to the rescues as much as I can. I encourage you to consider this nonprofit to join in the rewards of knowing you have contributed to the safety and well- being of one of Americas most iconic resources....the wild mustang.

Skydog Sanctuary is an amazing place that has provided a safe landing and rescue to dozens of at-risk mustangs, donkeys and horses. These horses through no fault of their own often wind up in kill pens, waiting to be shipped to slaughter. They have also worked tirelessly to reunite wild horse families separated through cruel roundups. Skydog has stepped in to rescue terribly abused horses who have lived through so much cruelty at the hands of humans they are mentally and physically fragile and cannot be around people. All these horses are welcomed to Skydog with gentle understanding, where nothing more is asked of them. They are allowed to be wild again, to live among herds and heal with time, love and care. They are my favorite sanctuary and there is nothing more wonderful than to see the stories of horses who are allowed to be wild again, to live their lives free and safe. I donate to them monthly and so happy to do so. There's nothing like seeing these animals running free and back to their glory.

I have personally visited both the Oregon and Malibu ranches of Skydog Sanctuary. I was able to see first hand the amazing dedication and care given to the wild horses and burros they have saved. The facilities are exceptionally maintained. The staff is knowledgeable and able to answer questions regarding the plight of America's wild horses and burros left in the wild. The immense property at the Oregon ranch provides these rescued wild ones a restoration of freedom in their new life. They are unique in how many families of horses they have reunited. I have been following, donating, a patron turned Supporter of a beautiful Curly mare from Wyoming Ember who was reunited with her father, Goliath at Skydog Sanctuary 7/2019! I couldn’t be prouder than to be a small part of the work that founder Clare Staples-Reed, does at Skydog. She is selfless, loving, devoted and the most ardent advocate of the Wild Mustangs. Her Sanctuary gives a 2nd, 3rd or last chance to those mustangs who have been abused, rounded up and separated from their families, thrown away, dumped in kill pens only to ship to slaughter if not for Clare. I consider Clare a friend and I am happy to help whenever I can to help her save another horse or donkey.
Therefore, again I recommend Skydog Sanctuary as the best non-profit organization I have worked with and will continue to do so.

I am a monthly Donor and supporter of Skydog Sanctuary. I found Skydog almost 2 years ago while I was going thru some tremendous loss and was looking for something to feel better about. I have always loved horses and as I read the stories of the rescues Clare was helping I found the light out of my pain. I wanted to help in any way I could as these horses/burros came from many different backgrounds and sad situations. The work they do at Skydog is absolutely amazing and sometimes heartbreaking but the rescued horses that have landed there are living their best lives. I have learned so much about these horses and their resilience, love, family bonds, friendships and their capacity to forgive. I highly support all the work and effort Clare and her team do at Skydog and encourage anyone interested to join.

I am a proud donor to Skydog Sanctuary. Not only do they love and care extraordinarily for the animals under their care they do so much to raise awareness for issues affecting these wild mustangs. Happy to support Clare and her team.

I have been following and supporting Skydog for a couple of years. This is not your normal rescue. Skydog mostly saves America's mustangs from the slaughter pipeline. No adoptions to move horses around, just a peaceful, well managed life at a beautiful sanctuary where they can be mostly free again. Its an honor to watch these beautiful creatures heal and find peace after the horrors they've seen at the hands of humans. Its always a bonus to see some mustang family members reunited to live at Skydog too! I love Skydog and all they do.

Skydog Sanctuary is a shining example of love and kindness! They take in neglected & abused wild horses & even domestic horses that need a soft place to land. These horses & burros will be taken care of for the rest of their lives & will never be sent to a kill pen. Many of these horses were rescued from kill pens where they would have been shipped to slaughter to Mexico or Canada. I am grateful for the opportunity to help Skydog Sanctuary save the lives of these wonderful horses & burros!

If you have a love & fascination for one of our national treasures, the mighty mustangs of the Wild West specifically (along with adorable donkeys & a few honorary mustangs), you must take a look at Skydog Sanctuary and "meet" it's amazing warrior founder, Clare Staples. This sanctuary is educating thousands as to the plight of these beloved, sentient beings that are entrenched in our history. Skydog is heaven on earth for mustangs & donkeys that have been rounded up, taken from their homeland and found themselves in horrific situations, offering them thousands of acres full of grace, healing and freedom restored. In addition to the land & space offered to these deserving creatures, they are provided individualized care & attention by the Skydog A-team, and nothing but the best in food and vet care. Skydog is food for the soul for both mustangs and humans alike, and Clare has a heartwarming, delightful way of bringing us all along on a journey of hope, healing and love.

Skydog Sanctuary is amazing! The work they do is not only rewarding to us as supporters, but also downright, just plain hard. We help out with donations, and they put forth unbelievable effort -- heart and soul, mind and body -- to make it all work. And their communications with us are exemplary. I have complete confidence in Skydog and am very grateful to them for all that they do on our behalf.

I love Skydog Santuary! I found it on Instagram and have become a Patreon simply because I was inspired at how well they care for their wild horses and how they are literally trying to save the species from being wiped out on the BLM public lands. I grew up riding bareback on my grandfather's farm and loved seeing how happy the horses were when they were free to roam as they pleased in big pastures. I no longer have horses, so watching this organization and getting to know each horse is an absolute pleasure. Clare's commentaries are so spot on, I can hear myself saying the same things...and talking to them the same way. I just love everything about it!

Skydog Sanctuary is one of the best Organizations I have ever worked with. Clare and everyone who works at saving our wild equines are kind, super helpful and keep updating every time something comes up! New residents and old residents wild equines that have been given sanctuary and their status. Videos of these beautiful creatures so I can see the actual results. Notifications if the animal or sanctuary is in peril. Consistent photo, video and verbal communication. Personally I love Clare and Skydog Sanctuary! Skydog Sanctuary is first class and the best charity I’ve ever dealt with!
