Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: OUR MISSION To Rescue at risk mustangs and burros from across America. As well as providing a home and freedom for these horses we aim to increase public awareness of the mustang issues, showcase herd dynamics, and the general and historical value of America's wild horses through media and social networks. Skydog Ranch hopes to show that wild horses can co-exist on the open range in ecological balance with many species of wildlife, and demonstrate how to best manage land to increase carrying capacity and reverse range degradation. We also aim for Skydog Sanctuary to be a place of peace and healing for our volunteers in both Oregon and California who are able to come and spend time with the wild ones in nature and be around these beautiful rescued horses.

Skydog is a Rescue and sanctuary for our wild mustangs. Skydog is providing them sanctuary where they can live as free roaming families. After being ripped away from their wild families these special horses are given a second chance to roam wild and free in the safety of a protected sanctuary. Sometimes they are adopted horses that just couldn't assimilate into domestic life and sometimes when God shines his light , Skydog has been able to reunite wild families (using photos from the wild before capture) that were separated and moved across several states. There are SO MANY incredible stories to follow. They also serve our community in education and preservation of our wild horses. Please support them.

I knew nothing of the wild Mustangs until January of 2020. Channel 7 news had an article about Picasso. I was hooked. I then accidentally found Skydog sanctuary. The videos show the horses jumping off the trailer to their freedom. Claire keeps us updated everyday with some new pictures videos and story’s about the horses rescued from kill pens, feedlots. In so many cases the horses are depressed sad and have given up. Her team takes the horses to Bend Equine Center for the best vet care. We cry with her when a horse passes on and we cried happy tears when Dreamy was brought back to her former self. Seeing everything the sanctuary does for the horses and then seeing them running wild and free as they should be warms my heart. Claire will also tell you how to get involved in passing the SAFE ACT 3355 so that the American Mustang can not be sent to Canada and Mexico for slaughter..Claire and her team are hands on and I am thankful I found her sanctuary. My dream is to volunteer at Skydog.

I recently found Skydog Sanctuary. Clare and her team are dedicated and knowledgeable to these majestic creatures. Her passion to preserve the wild mustangs is evident. They are well cared for and that is clearly evident as you look through the before and after photos of some of the horribly mistreated mustangs that she has rescued and nursed back to health. I am so impressed by what this rescue has done that I have become a monthly donor as well contributing to fund raisers to transport the animals to Skydog.

I visited Skydog and saw the beautiful grounds the Mustang's have to run and be free on. Their never ending care for the horses is unbelievable, checking on the herds every day to be sure they are all OK, the time they put in feeding them in the winter when the snow is here, making sure all springs are running for drinking water every day, constant medical care for any horse who needs it etc, etc is what Skydog does every day... They care for their horses better than any other rescue I have been to. Skydog will always supersede any situation that needs to be tackled and come out on top! Freedom, roaming the hills and running wild, health and unconditional love for the horse is Skydog!

They also post very informative videos of how they care for their large, wild herd. I always learn new things, which I love!! Skydog Sanctuary is the most magical place and an amazing organisation! They are totally committed to America’s mustangs, especially horses with special needs and older horses that are overlooked by adopters. I’ve seen starving horses and those shut down by their traumatic experiences, come back to health and life under the care of Clare and her fantastic team. Skydog understands how wild horses live, seeing especially the importance of family bonds. They work tirelessly to reunite families and bonded friends wherever they can - there is nothing more beautiful than seeing the joy of these reunions of America’s iconic mustangs, running wild and free on Skydog’s 9,000 acres. In a field where there are so many rescues and advocates, Skydog keeps true to its mission, working actively with other rescues to benefit as many horses as they can. I’m proud to support them.

There aren't words enough to express how wonderful Skydog is. Their generosity, their commitment to the mustangs of our nation is beyond belief. They work so hard to make sure our wild horses, who often end up in slaughter pens through no fault of their own, have a safe space to continue being wild horses. They expect nothing of these horses in return. To be able to visit and interact with the horses is also an amazing thing. The work they do, in just saving mustangs, and other four legged creatures, they bring families back together. The see herd animals captured to give their land over to the ranchers, they have brought horses and donkeys into their land to live like they should be. And care for them to keep their health up. searching through the BLM corrals or even at auctions for horses being sent south to Mexico to meet a fate they should not. To bring them to one of her two campuses and bring them back to health and giving them a new lease on life. Each have their own personality that we learn through Clara's posts. from Cassidy the little hinney who thinks he's the biggest horse there is. Or Bert and Ernie, donkeys so close to death but found the will to fight and get well and living the California life. Or reuniting Horse groups to bring the family back together. One of the top posts I watch out for.

Wild mustangs are being driven off the land they’ve roamed for centuries, rounded up and killed needlessly. Skydog is an amazing sanctuary for so many of these horses. They have beautiful land for them to roam and are the best guardians and caretakers. They manage their mission with the utmost sensitivity and care and always with the best interests of each horse at heart. I was fortunate to visit their expansive ranch in Oregon and met the founder and one of the horses I sponsor. It is a magical and majestic place, fitting for the horses who live there. Skydog is the most amazing rescue, and doing important work with our wild horses and burros. They help save mustangs from kill pens and others in dire situations, and have worked to rescue and reunite whole families or horses rounded up by the BLM. Without them, dozens and dozens of wild horses and burros would have ended up in the slaughter pipeline, or continue to be held in terrible, abusive situations. Watching the videos of reunited herds of horses, or a horse that has been rescued from abuse and cruelty is breathtaking and what we need to see in this world where so often we are besieged from all sides by negativity, division and anger. I gladly support them monthly, and will always continue to do so. Their work is so important, so relevant and profoundly needed.

Skydog Sanctuary is an amazing place that has provided a safe landing and rescue to dozens of at-risk mustangs, donkeys and horses. These horses through no fault of their own often wind up in kill pens, waiting to be shipped to slaughter. They have also worked tirelessly to reunite wild horse families separated through cruel roundups. Skydog has stepped in to rescue terribly abused horses who have lived through so much cruelty at the hands of humans they are mentally and physically fragile and cannot be around people. All these horses are welcomed to Skydog with gentle understanding, where nothing more is asked of them. They are allowed to be wild again, to live among herds and heal with time, love and care. They are my favorite sanctuary and there is nothing more wonderful than to see the stories of horses who are allowed to be wild again, to live their lives free and safe. I donate to them monthly and so happy to do so. There's nothing like seeing these animals running free and back to their glory.

I am a huge fan of Pine Nut wild horses. When our beloved Sampson and 4 generations of his family were trapped by the BLM Skydog stepped in and save them. Maestro and Chief were two other horses that I have fallen in love with and Skydog has taken them as well. Chief was injuried and could have been pts by the BLM and Skydog saved him. This awesome sanctuary is the best of the best. I support them each month. Every little bit helps them help more of our wild horses.

I give a donation once or twice a month to help this great sanctuary. I found this group when Maestro was taken from the wild and I was worried and Skydog took him in and gave him his life back.
Then when Sampson and his family were trapped and sent to BLM I prayed and cried for God to let Skydog be able to help these wild horses who mean a great deal to me. Skydog took Sampson and his family into their sanctuary. God answered my prayers and Skydog was there to help them live a life as wild horses. Skydog has taken in many wild horses or horses that wanted to be free, horses out of kill pens, abused, suffering. To me this is the BEST of the BEST. I look forward to update and I hope one day to see these beloved horses but Claire keeps us all in the loop.

Skydog Sanctuary is a spectacular organization!! I highly recommend supporting their work.
They work tirelessly to:
- provide sanctuary for wild mustangs and burros.

- advocate for the humane management of wild mustang and burro herds

- educate citizens about wild mustang and burro needs and current happenings

- educate politicians about the well-intended but faulty systems that have been put in place to care for the herds.

- form coalitions with other sanctuaries, individuals, and organizations to promote the welfare of mustangs and burros who have lost their freedom and advocate for change in the care and management of our wild herds.

The defining element of Skydog isn't what they do; others do the same things they do. Their defining mark is HOW they go about pursuing their passion for the Wild Mustangs and Burros. Skydog sanctuary runs on LOVE and RESPECT, always choosing to think the best about people and organizations, treating even their harshest critics and bullies with the respect and dignity they wish would be shown to them.

It's 2021 and I am still here, a member since 2017. Donor, volunteering and sponsor. Increasing my Sponsorship as income allows, increasing my capacity when I can, and always donating when I can whenever they ask for it.

Words fail me in describing this charity. The selflessness, the devotion, the dedication, & compassion from the founder to the volunteers is overwhelming. The mission of saving as many American Mustangs as possible carries beyond just the one's that land at Skydog.

I have seen the ranches operate first hand, and met the teams that run them. They are dedicated, knowledgeable, and compassionate as well as skilled. In unprecedented times, the team continues to operate, saving as many souls as possible while still maintaining the integrity of the mission and standards of those already in their care.

In the years I have been associated with Skydog, I have seen heartbreaks and miracles. I have seen dedication, devotion, compassion, and love. I have seen the founder, Clare Staples, educate people, fight-not just for the residences of Skydog, but ALL Mustangs, Donkeys, and equine hybrids. This proves its not just empty platitudes but a full on mission to save as many as possible, regardless of whether they end up at Skydog or somewhere else where they will be loved and cared for. The value you receive is immeasurable in knowing you are helping to save these beautiful souls.

If you want to know where the money goes, look at the horses, donkeys, and other residences. Look at the care, the food, and the animals. See the stories posted that include behind the scenes like teeth care, and hoof cleaning. Look at the powerful stories and before and after pictures of so many that have arrived in terrible shape and now are healthy, happy, and living their best lives.

Words fail me in describing this charity. The selflessness, the devotion, the dedication, & compassion from the founder to the volunteers is overwhelming. The mission of saving as many American Mustangs as possible carries beyond just the one's that land at Skydog.

I have followed the organization since 2017, growing as it grows. I went from silent lurker, to random advice, to donating, volunteering, and now sponsoring. I finally visited both ranches before lockdown in March of 2020.

To see the horses in person brought tears to my eyes. They truly roam free with endless fields in areas so large, you cannot see the fences. The staff and volunteers are respectful, diligent, and observant. They know the animals and they are the first to know when something is amiss. There is no extravagance at either ranch, everything is truly put towards the care of the residents.

Everyone I encountered on my visits made me so proud I am a sponsor. All were knowledgeable of each of the animals as well as skilled in their jobs and tasks. To actually see everything in person was truly the highlight of my year and a dream since I first learned Skydog existed.

The horses themselves looked healthy and carefree. Some approached out of curiosity and others kept their distance. The staff did their jobs so thoroughly and efficiently that you know it was all routine. (My day job is all about efficiency and streamlining so I am very skilled at recognizing it elsewhere).

To see inspiration forming in the next generation as they become aware of Skydog, its mission, and want to be a part of it, through educational programs and youth ambassadors programs Clare established or through parents association. My son is already thinking about how to change things politically to assist in the mission, and he is 16.

I included a picture of me meeting my first sponsored mustang, Butler at the Oregon ranch as well as a photo of one of the herds. The other photo is my son at the Malibu ranch falling in love with Firecracker (a senior mule) and two of the donkeys, Frankie and Johnny. There stories are worth knowing, as are so many others.

A few years ago I saw a reunion story between a rescued wild mustang names Goliath and his lead mare Red Lady. From this beautiful story I learned about the plight of our American Wild Mustangs. I have always loved horses from afar but I had no idea that our government was destroying our herds for the profit of big ranchers. Skydog Sanctuary has become my lifeline to the mustang world but it has also become a lifeline to some of these rounded up mustangs. Skydog Sanctuary is a light in the darkness. At a time when wild horses and burros are being abused, imprisoned, and killed by the federal bureau that is mandated to protect them, Skydog offers hope and refuge. As the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) aggressively engages in eradicating wild equines from western public lands, the Skydogs are aggressively engaged in rescuing them. They pull the animals from the pipeline thru which the animals are funneled to kill pens and slaughter houses. They save them from neglect and misery in the BLM’s holding system. The Skydogs restore their health, reunite friends & family, and return their freedom. The horses and burros live essentially free with love, respect, protection, and minimal human intervention on thousands of acres of beautiful, natural habitat in Oregon and California.

The dedicated effort that founder Clare Staples makes to document their arrivals, releases, and daily lives is commendable. On social media, donors and followers can watch the progress of the horses and burros, witness the healing of their bodies and spirits, see the top-level care they receive. We can share the joy of their antics and feel the depth of their relationships while receiving an excellent education on wild equines. Skydog Sanctuary offers a number of ways to support their efforts from sponsoring resident horses and burros to campaigns for protecting horses in general (e.g. The SAFE Act of 2021). As much as they would love to, they can’t save all of them, but they save as many as they can. They cooperate with other sanctuaries to help save even more. It is a labor of love that requires dauntingly hard work, compassion, and commitment, which the Skydogs give in abundance to right a terrible wrong.

Skydog is doing the work I believe is so necessary in this day and age in helping to keep American wild horses safe and still wild. Our society and government has wronged these magnificent animals by prioritizing cattle farmers over keeping the wild horses free on public lands. They should be protected and admired, not rounded up to be sold or killed because some rancher didn't want them around his cattle. These are families, not just 'herds', and have been here longer than any of us. Skydog rescues as many of these rounded up horses as they can and give them back their freedom on their sanctuary. But more than that, they try to find family groups so the horses can continue to live with the same horse herd/family they were with in the wild. These are not 'dumb beasts'; they feel fear, sadness, and loneliness just like we do, as well as happiness and love for each other. Skydog restores what the BLM is destroying as best they can with their limited resources. Their stories about the horses they save touches people world wide. They are needed and so crucial to the future of the American wild horses.

Skydog Sanctuary is a great organization!! There has been so much bad news for American Mustangs but Skydog is doing so much to help! I love their mission to help those in need, to reunite families and raise awareness of the issues around these amazing horses. They are extremely knowledgeable about the horses and the issues. Their social media posts are always the highlight of my day. It is wonderful to see their great work and get to admire and learn about the horses that way!

I love horses! Not in the sense of I want to jump on a horse and ride one, nor do I like sports or entertainment that use horses, what I am truly impressed with are Wild Horses galloping across the open plains of America's west. So, while I was living on the West Coast (Oregon), I started to research where I might see such splendor of Wild American Horses and that is when I first became aware of the injustices these majestic animals endure at the hands of our Government. Being in Oregon, I learned of Skydog Sanctuary and how Claire Staples saved many Wild Horses that were once free, but were violently hunted down by helicopters, separated from their families and imprisoned on substandard ranges or worse sent to slaughter. Claire is a brave woman that will fight tooth and nail to save as many of these once free and proud Horses from a life of misery and release them back onto the wild of the sanctuary. She works diligently with many other knowledgeable people to reunite horses with family and friends. Claire is very generous on her public platforms sharing photos, videos, stories and information about the horses. I am very appreciative of Claire and all the Skydog folks that have helped provide a safe, dignified, free, healthy and loving home for our America Wild Horses and Burros.

Skydog sanctuary has been a balm to my heart during these tumultuous times. I see these magnificent horses in a stable, secure and healthy environment with acres and acres of land to roam freely after being traumatized in one way or another. And Claire, OMG, she is the most articulate and caring of "rescuers". I can't say enough about her humanity toward the horses, the BLM, and other rescue sites. This is a wonderful organization with wonderful people and beautiful rescued horse.

I was born and raised a city girl but have always had a love for horses. As a senior adult I found many HMA sites on Facebook, revealing to the public the American Mustang and I fell in love with them. My very first two favorite stallions are Blue and Samson ,his son, whose Home Range is Sand Wash Basin. Unfortunately by watching these sites I also got introduced to the BLM and their Round Ups removing our beautiful wild horses from their home ranges and breaking up there family bands. Unfortunately one of my two favorite stallions fell into captivity not by a round up but he and part of his family were baited and trapped and turned over to the BLM. Thankfully there are also rescues and sanctuaries that have saved a small percentage, in the big scheme of things, of those rounded up over the years with thousands still located in holding sites. My favorite horse rescue and sanctuary is Skydog Sanctuary. I have supported this sanctuary for a couple years now and Skydog was able to rescue and give sanctuary to Samson and his family at Skydog in Oregon. I so miss seeing him on the open range with his dad Blue but I have found solice and comfort in know that he is safe and free to roam with his family at Skydog. Clare Staples and her team of dedicated horse lovers do a wonderful job of protecting and representing the Wild Mustangs and burros too. They go above and beyond with every rescue they take in and they also do their best to restore family bands. Thank You and well done Skydog Sanctuary.

It is not an overstatement to say that Skydog is life changing. While they create safe havens for mustangs and burros (and they do this thoughtfully and safely), they also create an online community who work together to support and cheer Skydog on, in addition to learning how to advocate for wild horses. We have all become better individuals through the education and inspiration provided by Skydog. They are selfless, generous and wise - teaching through example and literally changing the world, one animal and one follower at a time.

Skydog Sanctuary does so much good for our horses. Being an avid horse lover my heart often breaks at the news of how cruelly our horses are treated, rounded up and then held by our BLM. Skydog comes to the rescue of these victims, saves them and provides lovely homes in huge open natural pasture settings.
Skydog saves horses, and saves my own heart from living in this world that is often less than kind to our wildlife. I look forward to following and supporting this wonderful organization ….. their posts and videos give me faith and hope.

Skydog is a beautiful sanctuary for horses and burros stripped of their freedom in horrific ways, left to be sent to slaughter or worse. Compassion and the utmost care is given to these animals that have endured the loss of their families and faced fear and uncertainty. Clare and her team fight through the politics and evil to provide a safe and healthy environment for these deserving creatures. With the horrific roundups occurring which will destroy an iconic symbol of the American west, Skydog is such a special place and critical for the preservation of the American horse.

I was introduced to Skydog by a friend and fell in love with the story of Goliath and Red Lady. I have always supported the plight of America’s wild horses so I started following Skydog on social media. The work they do to educate people on these amazing wild horses in addition to their rescue work won me over. My daughter and granddaughter surprised me with a visit to Malibu for my birthday last year. Meeting these majestic horses at Skydog gave me hope for their future. Starving mustangs rescued from slaughter by Skydog like Dream standing proudly overlooking another mare’s new born foal Star gave me hope for all wild horses. The Skydog team has so much passion for their mission. It was a beautiful experience watching them and listening to the story of each horse. Being in their presence with the horses at Skydog was one of the best days of my life. It also allowed me to teach my granddaughter the importance of fighting and caring for these great American heroes our wild mustangs. I am now a proud sponsor of a beautiful mare Faith who runs free at Skydog Oregon. When I saw her for the first time her face was badly battered and spirit broken and it made my heart hurt but I knew she was just a trailer ride away to healing and freedom at Skydog. I start everyday with Skydog on social media and I have shared their work with several friends who have joined me in supporting this amazing non-profit who does amazing work every day. I am blessed to be a Patron for Skydog and I will continue to support them and spread the word to others. Thank you Skydog!

I live near Skydog Malibu and am an avid horse lover. I had learned of Skydog and Clare's incredible dedication and efforts to rescue, rehabilitate and allow wild horses and burros to stay wild at her sanctuaries and I began to follow them on social media. The individual stories of these animals and the abuse and neglect they've endured are always shared and when you donate to Skydog you feel connected to each and every one of them, your not just a donor. Clare consistently provides updates and information as well as full transparency of her organization and is quick to respond in a timely manner when you contact her. However, I am most appreciative of the opportunity Clare and her staff had provided me to visit Skydog and meet the horse I sponsored. When my sponsored horse got sick, Clare reached out to me immediately and allowed me to visit her and her filly one last time before she passed away. It was truly a bittersweet experience, which Clare and her staff did not have to afford me with their busy schedule but, one which I will never forget. I am forever grateful for the work they do on behalf of horses and burros and highly recommend getting to know them and their tireless efforts to save as many as they can! Please support Skydog!!

I grew up in Arizona reading stories about wild horses and the early west. I then learned that wild horses still ran free in some areas including Arizona. I read sadly of government and private captures of many wild horses, and recently I learned of Skydog sanctuary's work in rehabilitating and releasing horses that had been captured by BLM - releasing them into protected wilderness areas where they can run free again. Skydog has even worked to identify family groups that had run together before capture and restore those groups when possible as part of a free herd. I am happy to help support their work of purchasing captive horses, some from the kill pens headed for slaughter, and restoring them to a wild lifestyle.

Clare and Skydog Sanctuary are shining examples of what caring individuals can accomplish. They give the wild horses and burros they rescue a safe soft place to land and just be what they want to be. If they want to trot off into the wild blue yonder and avoid humans they are given that respect and if they want to come up to them for cookies then cookies they shall have. They share and post daily on what is going on in the horse's daily lives the good and the bad. Their followers feel as if they know the animals personally. I’ve been following Skydog Sanctuary on social media for several years. Founder Clare Staples is not only a tireless and passionate advocate and educator for one of our fast-disappearing national treasures, the American mustang, she is inexhaustible in her mission to save these horses and bring them home to sanctuary at Skydog.
Clare’s personal ethic is one of love, kindness, compassion and generosity, qualities that are, in my opinion, essential to running a successful nonprofit. During rescue missions, she not only searches for horses that were torn apart from eachother during roundups, she also consistently offers a spot in her trailer to the forgotten, unwanted, and unremarkable, simply because their lives are just as precious as the others. In spite of the reality of donor competition, Clare is very generous with her advice and experience with other rescuers when they seek her guidance as they develop their own nonprofits.
As a financial supporter of this nonprofit, I clearly see my donated dollars at work as I read Clare’s daily social media and Patreon posts. My heart is moved, often to tears, as rescue stories unfold while Clare and her team reunite these magnificent creatures with their band mates and family members. I never knew there was such a thing as a BLM roundup, or Long Term Holding, or kill pens, or the tragic Adoption Incentive Program, until I started following Skydog and began the heartbreaking journey to awareness.
If I had to pick only one animal rescue nonprofit to follow and support financially, it would most definitely be Skydog Sanctuary!

Skydog Sanctuary is nothing short of a miracle created for the abandoned, roundedup, languishing in kill pens wild horses. Clare Staples and her amazing staff put great emphasis on reuniting band families that get separated during roundups. Emphasis is placed on the seniors stallions who would never ever be adopted and who represent and are the essence of wild and free. The plain brown or bays horses that so often go unnoticed are always noticed by Skydog. And friends are often adopted together because they have bonded together in confinement and rely on each other. Their intake process and system to rehabilitate these magnificent depressed lost horses is brilliant. I could write a book about Skydog Sanctuary. I have been giving to Skydog for more than 3 years. During this time, Clare has been successful in locating and reuniting mustang families that have been separated by the actions of the BLM. Clare has proven that compassion and kindness can make a difference in this topsy turvy world where horses are pawns instead of being allowed to be the residents of land that has been mandated to them. Donating to Skydog is giving to a charity that not only contributes to the cause of rescuing mustangs from kill pens and certain death, but also helps maintain the icons of the old west.

Skydog Sanctuary. Where separated families are reunited, where the starved are given food, comfort, and restored to health, where mares are given the opportunity to stay with their young forever and where beaten and scarred horses learn to trust and be safe. That's Skydog sanctuary.

Their mission is to right the wrongs that have been done to mustangs and give them a safe berth and a forever home. They are fulfilling that mission and then some. Burros also know the peace that comes from living at Skydog. Skydog is the better face of humanity in the care and treatment of these mustangs that is presented to the world. They are the example of what all wild horses and burros deserve.

Every contribution goes to the betterment of the mustangs, burros, and other horses in dire need. They save, they protect, they nurture.

While there are many worthy wild horse rescues and advocates, I have found that Skydog Sanctuary is just about the best there is out there. Skydog gives sanctuary to wild horses who have no chance for success in captivity. They have taken in BLM branded American Mustangs from feed lots. Skydog goes to BLM holding facilities where thousands upon thousands of wild American Mustangs are penned up in paddocks for life, and pay auction and adoption fees for older mustangs that no one wants like the 25 year old band stallion Goliath who has known nothing but freedom until BLM gathered him and his family. They've taken special needs mustangs when BLM or other advocates ask for help like the mustang mare Dakoda who's adopter cried because he loved her but could not afford her high cost medical care. Some of their sanctuary residents are well known by those who follow the Mustang herds like the stunning Renegade who had a very large following in the wild, but many are anonymous with no followers.

In 2021 I became a patreon with Skydog Sanctuary, something I just don't normally do. Why? Because 2021 is the year of the family for Skydog Sanctuary. During 2018, Skydog reunited that 25 year old band stallion with not one, but two of his band mares, and one wound up giving birth to the last foal by that band stallion. This inspired Skydog to reunite as many wild horse families as they could, and call 2021 the Year of the Family while BLM rounds up thousands more wild Mustangs where they sort stallions from mares, and mare with foals from mares without foals, splitting families permanently. The joyful reunions of these band families is a sight to see. In September, Skydog is reuniting the family of Blue Zeus and along the way picked out a few senior band stallions (gelded by BLM) and through that have a second family to reunite!

If you go to their website, you can read all about the seniors, the special needs residents, and the families that have been reunited. The Mustangs are happy and healthy, living free at Skydog's two ranches. Clare at Skydog Sanctuary is always honest about what is going on with our wild horses - no hysteria or wild accusations towards BLM. She knows BLM has a huge job to do, even if they don't always do what is right for the wild horses that are in their care.

It is an honor to support a well thought out and well run organization that supports and advocates for the wild horses who have no real voice - the aged, the special needs, the broken families - without the hysteria and panicked calls for donations.

Skydog sanctuary is where miracles come true for captured wild horses. To give a wild horse who has been ripped away from the only wild life they ever knew, taken away from their families, put in kill-pens or crowded into “long term holding” is a governmental travesty. Skydog does what it can in 2 locations to reunite the family units, save the “unsaveable”, the broken-hearted & give them back their freedom at the sanctuaries without asking anything of the animals in return. A place for them to live out their days in relative peace, yet being checked on daily for medical issues. There is naturally the occasional death of an animal & we all grieve for them. Nothing lives forever but at Skydog we know that the founders had done all they could for the horses. The horses’ happiness & peace is all that matters at Skydog Sanctuary. & the founder’s daily postings keep all of her “patrons” very well informed & entertained on the whole herd of horses & burros/ donkeys. Claire’s daily videos are perfect vignettes into the daily happy lives of the animals. I personally am amazed at the interactions among the horses and how they protect each other always, as I’m a “city girl” who never knew about the bonds of horses or about the need for a place like Skydog Sanctuary.

Their plight is simple , to preserve wild mustangs, their families , our cultural pride, to treat them humanly and give them chance to be wild. We are all citizens and taxpayers and yet our voices are not being heard by our government representatives .Skydogsanctuary is our loudest voice. I am privileged to support their hard work and dedication to save these noble animals!!!!

I became a Patron to Sky Dog Sanctuary because I believe the work that they do is so important. Our Wild Horses, Mustangs and Burros are constantly are being rounded up by Helicopter. Then many go to kill pens. This is where these dedicated volunteers from Sky Dog Sanctuary come in They save as many as they possibly can take and then work to place some in other Sanctuaries. They spend countless hours driving to the Auctions, many hours trying to find certain Horses in these pens trying to keep families together. Or Horses that need help. All they want is to be given the opportunity to use birth control methods that will stop these Roundups. So they travel countless hours, spend more countless hours searching for Horses, and then drive them back to Sky Dog Sanctuary. But then their work starts. Getting some healthy enough to return to their Herds. Now these exhausted people take more of their time to go online and write extensive posts to us, their Patrons to keep us informed every step of the way as to what is going on. Sky Dog Sanctuary is the very best as far as I am concerned. I have never found any group to be as caring as Sky Dog Sanctuary.

The passion, integrity and transparency with which they operate as well as the fierce adherence to the well-being of the animals for which they fight makes the. operators and volunteers heroes. Their noble cause of saving the American mustangs and burros needs all of us to support this worthy endeavor . In addition, I have learned so much in reading and watching their posts, photos and videos. Skydog Sanctuary...Their work is so important! To watch how they turn the lives of these beautiful once wild mustangs around is nothing short of Magic! In many/most cases when the once wild horses arrive at Skydog Sanctuary, they are just hopeless. Their spirits have been completely broken by the trauma they have been put through for several months, sometimes longer...Skydog Sanctuary gives them back their hope and their freedom. You have only to watch one of the wild horse stories from the time they arrive at Skydog Sanctuary until just a few short weeks after, to see the miraculous transformation. It's simply THE most beautiful thing I personally have ever seen.

Found Skydog one day after seeing a video reuniting a stallion with his lead mare who was pregnant. I got chills simply watching the tender and happy moment. Years later I'm still supporting this sanctuary because of the unique, generous, kind hearted leader Clare and her support staff at both ranches. Skydog has the best staff!
The shear joy of being made to feel like you are an integral part of everything going on never stops. Just when you think your heart could not surpass the joy from the last save, Clare finds another with a unique story that makes you believe in the world and good people again. That's what this organization is all about. Saving lives! Point blank and simple. Giving wild mustangs, donkeys or mules back their dignity and freedom to choose their daily lives all the while their health and daily needs are cared for and each one of them is loved.
Clare tells a story every time she posts pictures and videos that allows you to feel a part of something so incredible. She knows the names and history of each horse in their care and loves on them when they allow and and lets them simply be wild if that is their wish. I've seen incredibly wild mustangs walk up to her for a nose rub or a scratch and you just smile at the total trust and connection between them.
Skydog reunites families!!! It's amazing to watch bonded horses being reunited after being torn apart. When reuniting isn't possible she gives them a new family and friends to live in peace the rest of their lives.
We are facing loosing wild mustangs completely. They are a huge part of our American history as much as the bald eagle is. Without someplace like Skydog they will be wiped out of our history. She saves them from devistating slaughter, heals the bodies, minds and spirits of horses who had previously fallen to cruel masters.
Miracles do happen, I've seen it at Skydog Sanctuary. Proud to be a supporter.

Skydog Sanctuary is a wonderful nonprofit that saves wild horses and burros from BLM holding pens and kill pens. Once saved, these equine transform physically and mentally because they are allowed to live free and safe for their remaining lives on 9000 acres. They have saved approximately 200+ equine and they are all monitored on a daily basis to ensure their well being. Whenever necessary, Skydog provides unlimited veterinary care. This photo is an example of a save from a kill pen after a BLM AIP adopter dumped this mare named Poppy for $. Unbeknownst to Skydog, Poppy was pregnant with a sweet baby mule named Firefly. By saving Poppy, they also saved Firefly from slaughter. I highly recommend everyone to support Skydog Sanctuary! These innocent, beautiful, and wild equine deserve to live free on the range. What an eye opener!! Though the information is heart-breaking, the Skydog rescue team works so hard to lead with kindness, compassion and facts. They post so frequently these beautiful (and sometimes deeply sad) videos and stories of mustangs that I feel I know each of them. The hard work securing these horses, caring for them, and letting them live out their lives in freedom but with the best care possible is simply remarkable. They coordinate with other rescues to help as many horses and possible, and really take the high road when it comes to negativity thrown their way. My goodness! Where do I start! WHAT A SANCTUARY❣️ I have followed many dog and animal rescues over the years but what Clare has done with her life is REMARKABLE. She has been blessed with abundant acreage and uses it to rescue wild mustangs. Hence Skydog! Skydog restores these broken spirited beautiful souls that have been brutally captured, crowded into pens and disconnected from their families which are everything to them. She brings them back to life by giving them the freedom to roam and run again for the remainder of their lives. EVERYTHING Skydog thinks and breathes is about each horse. EVERY horse is thoughtfully selected, watched and cared for. Each is carefully and wisely placed in exactly the right band. Each horse (and yes, donkey’s and a surprise baby mule❣️) has a personality that needs tender care and this sanctuary says it all to me; obviously to many, many others! Clare and her crew respectfully deal with the Bureau of Land Management and work well with other horse rescues. Skydog is very well managed in the long term care of each horse. Every year is carefully planned for how many horses they can take and they make adjustments along the way according to many factors, one of which is land conditions (i.e. will they have enough water for the horses they have during a dry season). They are always upgrading fencing, scouting the massive acreage looking for any natural habitat on which the horses could inadvertently injure themselves. Most of all, Clare and all who operate Skydog LOVE every one of these beautiful souls and it is their collective passion that makes Skydog an outstanding non-profit!

Clare is hands on every step of the way for each precious life who is rescued from a living death in kill pens and has the acreage to bring them home and be the wild mustangs and Burroughs they were before capture. There is nothing wrong with rescuing one or two equine and rehoming them on a few acres, but Skydog actually has 9000 acres to bring home families and groups of wild ones captured and places them in the wild again to live the lives they were meant to be! On protected land, to live free for all their days! I have never run across a Sanctuary like Skydog. They not only have acreage in Malibu, but Oregon!! I can not praise them enough. When Covid hit I had more time and happened upon SkyDog Sanctuary on Instagram, I had no idea what was happening with the wild mustangs in the USA and was shocked to learn about these cruel helicopter round ups and kill pens. SkyDog has educated me all about these magnificent animals and I soon realised just how much help they needed in rescuing some of these beautiful horses that have their freedom stolen from them. I donate monthly a small amount and extra when I can on Patreon and you get to see just how much they do to help mustangs and burros. Clare keeps you well informed on most platforms and they also have a comprehensive website for those not so into social media, she has a beautiful natural way of relaying the stories of each rescue and you know she is doing her absolute best for these magnificent horses.

Skydog Sanctuary is an amazing organization, and they live and breathe their mission. I love that they rescue mustangs and burros and allow them to live their lives as wild as they want to be, never expecting anything from them. A hallmark of Skydog, I think, is their focus on reuniting families that have been torn apart due to the round ups. I believe they’ve reunited 7 or 8 families so far and the videos of the reunions are so touching. Even though the horses are allowed to remain wild, the Skydog team monitors the herds daily and provides medical care and/or extra feedings and water when necessary. If they need to bring a horse in from their vast property for medical attention, they lure the horse with treats or hay and usually brings one of their buddies along too to help reduce stress. All their animals have come from such difficult backgrounds but they flourish under their care. How do I know this? Claire, the founder, posts daily videos of the horses and burros so you can see for yourself how they are doing. Along with the videos, Claire usually has interesting stories or reflections to share about the horses. I’ve learned so much from these videos about horse behavior, the bonds they form, and what is happening to our wild mustangs and burros in the wild. I also appreciate that when Skydog does a fundraiser, they are very transparent about how much they need and how much they received. Skydog is all about what is best for the horses and burros, and will work with other sanctuaries with the same mission. Skydog has encouraged me to be an advocate for these animals because even though sanctuaries are a good alternative, wild mustangs and burros belong in the wild, out on the range!

I cannot say enough about Skydog Sanctuary and Clare Staples, its founder. Skydog has elevated the Mustang rescue community by educating myriad people through an engaging and uplifting social media presence. In addition, Skydog and Clare have shown great support for other rescues, thus paving the way for more comprehensive advocacy for these magnificent creatures. Most of all, the love and true sanctuary that horses have at Skydog is evident in every interaction. I have had the honor of visiting Skydog Sanctuary Oregon and have witnessed the beauty of these horses living their best lives. Of course we all wish they could remain free on the range, but for those who've been displaced - there is no home like Skydog. I have been following Skydog for several years. I believe in Claire and her mission in providing horses with a home where they can remain wild. Some of her horses come from neglected homes, cruel homes, or were rounded up by the Bureau of Land Management. Depending on the horse's health and mental condition, they are either released with other herds in her sanctuary in Oregon or remain in Malibu for special hands-on care. Some sanctuaries raise money for an animal and then only post one or two followup photos and you never really know what happens to the animal after that. Not Claire! She posts daily videos of the horses and lets us know what is happening with each herd. She will also post videos of specific horses upon request. She is transparent about the adoptions and the animals health and daily routine. It is very obvious she really cares about the horses. She is not in this for the money but to help the horses who lost their home in roundups. She provides education about their ongoing situation due to the Bureau of Land Management's constant summer round-ups and provides ways her followers can help them that do not include money, like asking politicians to pass the Safe Act.

They save mustangs that have been removed from public lands that are dedicated for the horses and save them by bringing them back to a wild-like life on their acres and acres of sanctuary. In particular among so much of the wonderful work they do, they seek to reunite families that were separated during roundups to live out their lives together in family groups or new families, wild and free. They provide veterinary care and wise and careful maintenance so that the horses can live their lives in happy peace. Skydog Sanctuary does amazing work rescuing wild mustangs and burros from BLM holding facilities. The 9000-acre ranch in Oregon is home to over 100 wild horses and over 30 wild and rescued burros. These are animals who have lost everything -- their freedom, their families, and often their health, both physical and emotional. Skydog restores their freedom and, in many cases, their families too. Skydog asks nothing of them, sees to their physical needs, and makes every effort to restore families and pair animals with friends, so they can live healthy emotional lives as well. I wholeheartedly encourage those who love wild horses and burros to support Skydog Ranch and Sanctuary. I am so grateful for the great work they do.

During this time of COVID and political upheaval, my spirits always get an immediate lift when I view a posting from Skydog Sanctuary on Patreon. Each story about how a wild horse is saved from a terrible life confined in crowded corrals or, worse, sold to a slaughter buyer moves my heart and makes me so grateful. I often get teary just reading how a horse that has been mistreated or has become shut down finds a new beginning at Skydog. Nothing is asked of these horses. They can be free again with space to run for miles. Often Skydog finds the families of these horses and reunites them so a former stallion again has his mares with him. Skydog makes every effort to make sure each horse or donkey joins a herd with compatible animals so they have friends around them. I so enjoy watching the stories of these individual animals from when they are first rescued to their introduction at Skydog and their rehabilitation until they are as close as possible to living the life they were meant to live. Skydog is hands down one of the most extraordinary animal sanctuaries I've had the good luck to cross paths with. Founder Clare Staples is very transparent, not only about costs and expenses but also about the healing challenges these wild horses face once captured. The good, the bad, and the ugly - both physically and emotionally, Clare shares it to the extent she can.

An additional huge plus is their Global Federation of Sanctuaries (GFAS) Accreditation. I assisted another sanctuary in getting this hard-earned grueling accreditation so am familiar with all of the physical, financial, and planning structures that Skydog has in place to cover a variety of situations and scenarios. It speaks very highly of them that they would go to the lengths necessary to receive this coveted accreditation in the animal sanctuary world.

From their transparency, to their GFAS Accreditation, to the extraordinary communication with supporters and donors, to the freedom they provide these wild horses and the families they reunite...Skydog is a truly extraordinary sanctuary.

As someone who loved horses since childhood I am fascinated by the fact that there are wild horses roaming our public lands. I am deeply troubled by the relentless ways some special interest groups work to have them removed from public lands with brutal helicopter roundups. After that family bands of those noble animals are broken and horses face a very uncertain future in crowded holding facilities. I became more aware of this when I learned about Samson and his multiple generational band that was trapped, removed to be auctioned off. Skydog Sanctuary managed to win the adoption for Samson and family and reunited them. Since then my admiration for its founder Clare Staples, the Skydog team and their tireless effort to reunite mustang families, save those who ended up in kill pens after having been adopted through the AIP hasn't stopped growing. Skydog impresses also in its efforts to work together with many other rescue groups for the best interest of the wild horses and burros. I started following Skydog's FB page, and donated to help them obtain a winning bid for wild horse Goliath. An iconic formerly wild stallion, whose lead mare was adopted out and was pregnant with his last foal. The adopter wanted them reunited, so Red Lady went to Skydog and was reunited with Goliath. They are together with their son Bodhi and another daughter Clare rescued, Ember. They are a happy family at Skydog. I have learned so much about wild horses from Clare, so I went from being a fan to becoming a monthly patron through Patreon. Clare makes us feel so much a part of every single rescue. She works very hard to reunite band families that were torn apart after being rounded up. Her latest family is that of Blue Zeus and Apollo. Two 20 year olds who were going to be sent to long-term holding, never to be seen by the public again. Blue Zeus was one of the most photographed horses on the range, and Clare's personal favorite. She is currently working on bringing his family to Skydog. His lead mare, Nike and her daughter Juno are there with another daughter from another unknown mare, plus an older mare, her best friend on the range, a male who has frost bitten ears, and a couple of mares with foals. This is her biggest haul of reuniting families torn apart so unnecessarily. She is an earth angel to these iconic horses. The US government should be ashamed of themselves for these inhumane roundups of horses so that private ranchers can graze their cattle and sheep for cheap on PUBLIC land. Many horses die from being chased by helicopters, crushed into trap pens. It's horrible. I am so proud of my participation and educating others about these horses.

When some local wild horses were rounded up a couple of years ago out community was worried. Many people mentioned ask Skydog.org if they would take a family group. They said yes. And beautiful band stallion (gelded) Samson and family have been there almost two years and are doing great.
I have been following them ever since. Became a patreon member one and half yrs ago.
It is a wonderful organization. Clare Staples shares often if not daily so followers get to see over and over how saved horses are doing.
Organization seems very open and honest. One of the best.

I just noticed this rescue for the first time a couple months ago. They post awesome video updates every day and I feel like they really do everything possible to save as many horses as they can and then follow through with the medical care they need. Not just saving them from the kill pen and then letting them languish elsewhere. They truly go all the way for those they are able to save. I am now a monthly Patreon.

When you have people with heart, and strong beliefs to fight (not literally) for what's right, that is Skydog Sanctuary! They rescue horses, donkeys, and other animals, so they'll have a happy, healthy long life. Never saying no to horses that had a hard life with lifelong injuries or just age. Rescuing horses that were separated from their family band, and reunite them to mend their hearts. To have an understanding of how important family is to these horses. Giving them a beautiful home to stretch their legs and especially to feel safe. The angels at Skydog work really hard to make it happen for the lives that could be lost to horrible situations. They deserve recognition for the love, care and drive they have to make our world a better place. I've cried many tears for their many achievements and grieved with them on loss. I know their work is hard, but they still push on, and so will I, for them and for the many animals they give a better life to. Thank you Skydog for all that you do!!

Skydog is the best wild horse sanctuary. Clare Staples, the founder, doesn’t let anyone or anything stop her from saving abused, neglected, dumped, special needs horses and donkeys that need sanctuary. The horses get the best of care and are allowed to live like they were supposed to in the wild with cookies on the side. She will turn over every rock to find family members so that they can be reunited to live together for the rest of their lives. To wild horses, family is everything to them. This sanctuary goes above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of abused, neglected and traumatized wild horses, donkeys and even some domestic horses. They are educating the public as to the plight of the horses, both domestic and wild, in the slaughter pipeline and Kill pens. Skydog is also very committed to passing the Safe Act H.R. 961 and S. 2006 to stop the transportation of horses over the borders to Mexico and Canada to be slaughtered for human consumption.

They are also very much involved in reuniting wild horse families to live their lives together as they were meant to be on public lands.

Skydog Sanctuary goes above and beyond in the flight to help save wild horses, who are taken from their land sold to auctions and wind up in the slaughter pipeline. Claire Staples and the staff go to these BLM sites and bid for these horses that deserve a good life, her main focus until the day comes thst horses will not be removed from their land, is to give them back as much freedom as she can hence her 9,000 acre ranch in oregon where they run free once more. And the seniors or challenged rescues( yes!! she takes them all) she has another ranch at her home in Malibu, Now for why I think this rescue deserves all the accolades and respect they deserve. She doesn't just take them and release them on her land
1.) Upon arrival they are given time to decompress from the stressful captures.
2.) She has the vet come to give each horse a complete examination and depending on the wildness of each horse they are loaded in a very humane shoot where they get exams vaccines teeth and feet checked. if all is good she then decides which herd is best soothed to each individual horse and they are released to the herd where she has cameras on the land to watch them daily any sign of distress to any of her 150 plus horses they are again brought in for evaluation. There are no steps she will not take to insure a healthy horse.
3.) Although there is plenty of grass on the land she makes sure they are fed grain and the finest hay which gets distributed by truck twice a day on to the land. expecially in winter. there streams with water and when they go dry she has her team haul water up the mountains.

In closing There is not one thing this sanctuary will not do for the care and well being of the wild mustang. and she spares no expense. That is why is Skydog has the biggest support from around the world. the best sponsons and donors who give even a dollar to help her she deserves all this an more. See just one video and you will never ask again why she deserves this and more...

I have been donating to Skydog Sanctuary for the last two years, I am never surprised at the the lenghts this sanctuary will go to, to search the Blm Corrals, for horses that they have branded as lame, and have no shot at being adopted. She looks for horses and donkeys who are in desperate situations some have been sent to a kill pen or some other deplorable place where they are starved neglected or are sale authority horses that are being loaded onto trucks to Mexico for slaughter. .Or sometimes if someone reaches out to her because they have a horse who longs to just be a wild horse and she will take them as well. It doesn't end there then the process of getting these horses hauled to quarintine (If need be ) A Vetenarian Hospital because they are starved and need evaluation to see if the animal can even be saved if they give her the slighest bit of hope she will spend and do whatever it takes to give that animal a shot at a good life. She provides whatever they need from the day they land in her care Once the horse is cleared for travel she goes to get them or her staff and she brings them to skydog if they still need healing time she provides them the comfort a barn where they continue to heal until they are ready to be released with a herd that she feels is the fit for that horse. These wild horses elder horses and donkey's are seen throughout the year from the Vet. and the Ferrier for their maintence they are well feed have streams to drink and they get to roam thousands of acres of land under the constant supervision of Claire Staples and her staff where they never have to worry about clanging gates and helicopters coming to hurt them . This is one of the most dedicated Sanctuaries I have had the pleasure to help with donations for the well being and safety of the wild mustangs they deserve every donation they get and more. Claire and Staff will move heaven and earth to save the Wild Mustangs and the donkey's They are # 1 in my eyes and many others Here theese animals truely get a soft landing and a another chance at life....

I started following Skydog when Samson and his family were rounded up by BLM when a not so nice person complained about them being on his property. Through much hard work Skydog was able to rescue Samson, his brother, four generations of three mares and a foal. They were able to keep this family together. Since I started following Skydog, they have been able to reunite several families that were separated due to BLM roundups.

I have followed along for over 3 years now. I have been following, donating, a patron turned Supporter of a beautiful Curly mare from Wyoming Ember who was reunited with her father, Goliath at Skydog Sanctuary 7/2019! I couldn’t be prouder than to be a small part of the work that founder Clare Staples-Reed, does at Skydog. She is selfless, loving, devoted and the most ardent advocate of the Wild Mustangs. Her Sanctuary gives a 2nd, 3rd or last chance to those mustangs who have been abused, rounded up and separated from their families, thrown away, dumped in kill pens only to ship to slaughter if not for Clare. I consider Clare a friend and I am happy to help whenever I can to help her save another horse or donkey.
Therefore, again I recommend Skydog Sanctuary as the best non-profit organization I have worked with and will continue to do so.

A few years ago I heard about Skydog Ranch and started following. In doing so, I have learned an incredible amount about the plight of the wild horses and what so many advocates are doing to save them. What I love about Skydog is that every horse has a story and we meet them and then see them bloom into their original beauty as the horror of the roundups recedes and they know they are safe. One of the most important things Skydog is doing right now is bringing the family back. The knowledge that the band horses are familial and that they have loss and sorrow has made the family reunions at Skydog ever more joyous. To see these saves is beyond description. Another important thing that Skydog does is raise awareness and join with other very competent sanctuaries to help horses find what they need; wildness and safety or some are even alright to be adopted after vetting and training. Skydog shows that we CAN all work together. Bless Clare, her husband, and all the Skydog team!

Clare Staples and Skydog Sanctuary do relentless and tireless work to save, rehabilitate and release wild mustangs who have been rounded up by the BLM, who cannot be domesticated, who are destined to die through the failed AIP program when they get returned after “adoption” … and she focuses on family groups that have been torn apart through this process. Her work is inspiring, and the resilience of Clare and her team is beyond remarkable with the devastation, pain, injury and loss they encounter on an ongoing basis. I was at first taken and moved by the beautiful images of horses running free through thousands of unspoiled acres, but it was through Skydog that I began to learn about the plight of wild horses in the western United States and in Canada, where I live. Skydog informs through positivity and optimism and they are saving not only these wonderful , sentient beings, who have stories and beloved families of their own, but also a part of history and the natural world that should move us all. I am not of the "horse world", but through Skydog, I have come to appreciate these sensitive souls and the fact that they deserve to roam freely on their ancestral lands. I find the organization to be responsive and appreciate in a way no other non-profit or rescue I have been involved with. It is very clear that Claire's heart has been given without reservation to every horse, donkey, and mule on her land. It's wonderful to witness.

I stumbled upon a post from Skydog Sanctuary a few years ago, and I was immediately hooked on their stories, videos, and rescue efforts. Skydog is a beacon of light in this world of despair, it brings me hope, and shows there is still good going on somewhere. I dream about making it out to the ranch one day and visiting with the amazing staff and beautiful horses. I also love the awareness they raise about our wild horse population, the roundups going on, and the SAFE Act. I will forever be a Wild Lover.

I first found Skydog Sanctuary through a video story about reuniting a once wild and free roaming stallion (now gelding) with his beloved mare. The video was breathtakingly beautiful. I have been a follower and donor ever since. I have watched Skydog Sanctuary take in wild Mustangs, and donkeys, after being rouned up that are in horrible shape from being held in captivity and completely transform them back into their previously healthy bodies - as they were when wild. They are also given back their freedom. The videos and stories of the reunited family bands are awsome. As well as the care that is taken to ensure that every horse or donkey fits in with the group they are placed into on the sanctuary. Skydog Sanctuary is a magical place.

Skydog is one of the most caring, compassionate and educational Mustang Sanctuaries. I’ve been following them since I discovered them back in early 2017. I even had the great pleasure of volunteering at their Malibu location one day. Talking with the long time volunteers and Clare was so moving. They had recently brought in Goliath, and One of his mares Red Lady- this was my introduction to understanding the families of the Mustang herd communities. Shortly after I visited, Red Lady had her foal Bodhi.
I’ve been watching the sanctuary grow these past 4 years by leaps and bounds on a mission to bring mustangs who’d been separated via round ups together again in safe freedom. It’s been a extraordinary to witness via social media. I always learn so much from Clare’s posts, videos and pictures. I’ve watched them develop into a profoundly healing, caring and compassionate sanctuary and growing herd of supporting people. I love hearing people’s heart opening responses. I’m so grateful for Clare and her extraordinary team for all the work they do.

Skydog Sanctuary consists of caring, hardworking horse advocates! They know how horses think, act, congregate and how to keep them healthy.
Skydog Sanctuary allows horses and burros to live as wild and free as possible on 9000 acres, only handling them if they need attention! Horse advocates know that horses are family and band oriented and they strive to bring band horses back together.
If humans were as caring of each other as Skydog Sanctuary is of its wild horses and burros this would be a much better world!
While we would wish that our wild horses and burros were free to wander the public lands they were given by law in 1971, Skydog Sanctuary is the next best place for them to be! They are loved!!

I've been a donor for years, too. And proud to be. They're about returning horses back to being wild after being rounded up or in kill pens in a protected sanctuary. I can’t say enough good things about Skydog Sanctuary. I have been supporting them for 4 years. Their mission is to return at-risk mustangs to a near-wild living: acres to run, with the added advantage of medical care if needed. These are mustangs that have been abused and/or dumped in killpens. They also adopt older horses from BLM holding that are not good candidates for training, and where possible, reunite family bands. They frequently post videos and photos so you can follow the progress of their rescues. They take excellent care of the horses, and have been requested on multiple occasions to take injured or sick horses that might otherwise have been euthanized. The horses thrive under their program. I completely trust that my donations are being used effectively. I also appreciate that they work with other rescues, which benefits everyone.

Clare and her team are tireless advocates for America’s wild mustangs.

Their goal is to have the mustangs remain free on their native lands, but when that is made impossible by Federal Governmental round ups, they give sanctuary to as many horses as they can.

Skydog leans strongly towards reuniting family bands of horses that have been broken by the roundups.

They have taken in devastatingly neglected and abused horses and miraculously brought them back to full physical health

The mustangs that end up at Skydog get to live out their lives on the 9000 acre sanctuary with the added benefit of having food, water, and medical intervention available to them whenever needed.

Skydog Sanctuary is transparent in what they do. It is both heartbreaking and heartening to see their hard work day in and day out.

I have been a volunteer and supporter of Skydog Sanctuary for two years. I have visited their Oregon location to volunteer several times and have witnessed first hand the amazing transformations that occur between when a horse or donkey first arrive, scared and possibly sick or injured, to when they return to health and freedom. It is an absolutely amazing thing to get to witness and be a part of. All of the animals at Skydog are given the utmost respect and care. They get to enjoy the absolute best life, living free to roam on thousands of acres while also benefiting from human care to keep them healthy and happy for as long as possible. My first trip out there to volunteer happened to be at the same time 4 orphaned foals arrived from the BLM corrals following a roundup. Some of them were injured, including Sugar who is in the photos below. The first was from her first day when she immediately received urgently needed vet care for a severe wound and the second is from about a year later. She and the other foals are now two years old, living their best lives with a herd of friends at Skydog. Playful and happy and full of life. There is no doubt in my mind that if Sugar had not gone to Skydog, she would not be alive today. I am so grateful for all of the beautiful lives they have saved and continue to save.

Skydog Sanctuary is a gathering place for those of us who love and respect wild mustangs. Skydog Sanctuary provides us the opportunity to have a small part in protecting these icons of the American West. I have strong feelings about the treatment of wild mustangs and their removal from their rightful homes on the vast open ranges, often by inhumane methods.

Unfortunately, that right to live freely is infringed upon constantly by those seeking more range for personal gain. "Control," (by diminishing herd size or outright destruction of whole herds of wild mustangs), is their focus, not protection. I'm reminded of how the Native Americans were pushed aside relentlessly, as more land was demanded for settlers. We are doing the same with wild mustangs. Their right to exist on Public Grazing Land, is not considered relevant by those in charge of the roundups, who sell these mustangs to often questionable persons who then financially gain by re-selling to countries who will turn a beautiful mustang into meat.

Skydog Sanctuary is about integrity, courage, purpose and willingness to do that "hard thing," which is to stand strong between those who are rounding up, terrifying and keeping penned until sale, these beautiful wild creatures of our American West. Skydog Sanctuary has the heart, soul and commitment to provide safety from depredation for wild mustangs. They educate those willing to listen. They willingly work endless hours to scout for mustangs, even track members of specific wild herds so they may be reunited, then bid and when successful, they complete that process by transporting the mustangs to one of their facilities. It is always a celebrated homecoming!

It doesn't stop there though! Skydog has protocols in place to provide protection for their staff and the many volunteers committed to this cause. And care via best practices for the wild mustangs themselves. Protocols which will inform the Skydog staff and give understanding of each mustang, provide specific and excellent veterinarian care, and just as necessary, a calming atmosphere to replace the frantic experiences and horrendous roads these horses have traveled to arrive at a safe Sanctuary.

I am 71 years old but not your average "Nana." Just recently retiring, but best job ever was the 14 years at a national non-profit which provided (and still provides) assistance dogs for people with disabilities. It's eye opening and heart fulfilling to be a part of the great work these non-profits do. It changed my outlook on what's truly important in life. Skydog lets me be involved in my own small way, to make this world a better place. I wholeheartedly support them!

I believe our Mustangs are icons that must be saved...they are, after all, OUR horses. Skydog has won a monthly donation from me because they too value these precious reminders of all that is good about our nation...freedom, being able to live your life as you wish, and the American spirit. Skydog communicates constantly about what they are doing so I know exactly how my hard-earned dollars are being spent. I recommend Skydog to any friends looking for a sanctuary to donate to.

Skydog is such a generous caring group I’m in awe of. They provide sanctuary for horses that would have no hope without them. Many time saving them from terrible abuse, trauma, and slaughter. I love Skydog for also advocating for the horses they can’t save and the ones still wild as well as educating the public on wild horses, horse abuse, and the BLMs land management tactics. All while staying classy and professional with the opposition. They are a wonderful needed group in the horse community and an inspiration for all. They have been such a personal inspiration that I plan to adopt my own wild mustang in a few years when I retire to a plot of land of mine.

Sanctuary- a place of refuge and protection. This is what Skydog is and so much more. Many of Skydog saves were abused, starved, cast out as garbage, non adoptable, misunderstood wild Mustangs and Burros. Beautiful innocent animals ripped from their homeland, families and friends. Some of the stories are so heart wrenching its hard to grasp it all. Seeing the pictures of the Mustangs and Burros before they land at Skydog is not for the faint of heart. BUT then we get to witness miracles take place. These castaways start to flourish and blossom. Each Mustang or Burro is given individual care for THEIR needs. Skydog does not use the "one size fits all" approach but rather carefully studying what needs to happen for that One to reach their full healing potential, inside and out. Its amazing to watch in fact its remarkable!! Everyday I can't wait to see the videos shared of the transformations taking place and hearing Clare call each of their names out. It's priceless.
Also Clare makes every effort to reunite families. She goes over and beyond to keep families together and works hard looking for family members that were separated. Seeing the horses reunite after being torn apart makes me love Skydog even more. I have the highest regard for Clare and the Skydog team and proudly donate and sponsor every month. Being able to support Skydog blesses our family so much. We are a part of something good and wonderful. Skydog changes lives. Not only for the rescues but for all of us on the journey with them.

Skydog Sanctuary is one of those, unfortunately, very rare things - a true equine sanctuary that is both responsibly and compassionately run. The equine world is rife with faux rescues. Skydog stays true to their mission and successfully manages the delicate balance between responding to horses in need while maintaining the integrity and financial viability of the sanctuary. Whenever one donates to Skydog one can be secure in knowing that the funds will be put to good use for the benefit of the horses. The facilities are an equine paradise where the physical and mental health of the horses are attended to with assiduous, daily care and attention to detail. I spend a fair amount of time investigating, tracking and publicizing bad horse rescues and I cannot adequately praise Skydog enough. They are an exemplary non-profit in every respect and the health and happiness of the horses they serve are the best demonstration of just how good they are.

It’s heartbreaking that Mustangs are first removed their home and family and all they know, only to be eventually given to humans who then treat them horridly. Skydog saves these souls and gives them back their lives and shows them that there is love and kindness still, and they get to finish their lives in heaven on earth.

I started following Skydog on facebook and fell in love with their objectives and their goals for rescuing mustangs. The first time I was introduced to mustangs was at a mustang magic function in Fort Worth, Texas and I fell in love with the program. I then saw the documentary made by a Texas Aggie where he and a few of his friends adopted mustangs and trained them and went on one hell of a trail ride from the Texas border all the way to the Canadian border. These are great outcomes for these iconic horses. Some mustangs are captured and go on to good programs and good lives in captivity with good trainers and good horseman. Others aren't so lucky. They end up in kill pens and in the hands of people who abuse them. Long story short, a lot of our mustangs end up in the wrong hands and need to be rescued from the rescuers and the government roundups and holding pens they are subjected too. Skydog Sanctuary is dedicated to rescuing and safely caring for these mustangs at their sanctuary. Their dedication and knowledge to this cause is above and beyond. I don't have a lot of money to contribute to nonprofits, but Skydog is so deserving of the dollars I can contribute. I love seeing the updates and contributing to the rescues as much as I can. I encourage you to consider this nonprofit to join in the rewards of knowing you have contributed to the safety and well- being of one of Americas most iconic resources....the wild mustang.

I have been a Skydog donor for about two years, and I have been observing during this time, how the organization operates. I pick and choose very carefully the not-for-profit organizations that I support.

Skydog Sanctuary is exceptional in every way. The horses that come to Skydog are generally broken souls -- they have been brutally rounded up, stripped from their land and their families. Some arrive from kill pens or auctions with terrible physical injuries; some arrive confused and fearful, having endured horrendous abuse at the hands of humans.

From everything I've seen, Skydog owner Claire Staples and her team of professionals are real pros - they work primarily with wild mustangs, but they also accept wild donkeys and other equines. Claire and her team are compassionate and loving. They get to know and understand the psychological profile of every horse and donkey that arrives. Every new arrival and resident is respected and treated as an individual - and Claire literally dotes on every one of them. When they arrive injured or sick, she and her excellent team of veterinarians nurses each one back to health.

After a few weeks or months at Skydog Sanctuary, these formerly broken spirits are transformed - they become fat and happy, they form friendships in herds. Whenever possible, families that had been rounded up and separated for years, are reunited. You can see Skydog in action yourself in Instagram photo-diaries, where the journey of almost every horse is documented. Claire watches each horse to make sure he/she is happy and thriving in their herd. If she determines that there is a problem with personalities, she will move the horse until the right herd is found.

Skydog Sanctuary is actually two ranches -- one in Malibu, California, and the other, main ranch in Oregon. The Oregon ranch is 9000 gorgeous wild acres and when the mustangs are released onto this land, they have found heaven. Claire has given them their wild lives back, but better. They are fed the best high quality hay and when necessary, are given superior vet care.

This organization is truly impressive, and I am grateful for their genuine love of these animals and for the hard work they do on a 24/7 basis.

Anyone who cares about the fate of these beautiful wild mustangs on government owned lands should take a look at and support Skydog Sanctuary. It is well deserving of inclusion in Great Non Profits.

I have never run across an organization that works so hard for the support of horses and their welfare. It is exhausting work, not only in the fund raising aspect but also in the care of these magnificent creatures. There is no better way to greet the day then to read Clare's postings. She does around two per day and this requires her physically going out on the range, finding these particular horses and giving us the background information on each and everyone along with a video or pictures. The passion and motivation to do this day in and day out is astounding. This is only the range and posting part. I can't imagine the other work in just running an organization, the employees, the paperwork, the constant answering of inquiries, the vet visits, the people visits, the bad weather conditions at times. Most of all, worrying about how to pay for it all. Obviously, I could go on and on. The best part of my day is waking up and seeing her postings of inspiration. The last part of the day seeing her postings to close out the day. Amazing work, amazing employees, amazing horses, and amazing venture.

I was introduced to Skydog Sanctuary on Instagram by my sister, who was inspired to share her discovery of the site. I look forward each day to seeing pictures or videos of the beautiful wild horses and/or burros and hearing the stories of their rescue, healing and new life. It is heartwarming and gratifying to have access and see the goodness towards and care of these magnificent animals. Skydog Sanctuary is an outstanding example of what kindness and goodwill are all about. G. Boros

I discovered Skydog Sanctuary on Instagram. Knowing little to nothing about horses, burros or wild mustangs, I found Clare’s postings of her rescues so inspiring I became a monthly donor. I shared her information with family and friends and encouraged them to become supporters as well. What Clare and her staff go through to rescue these animals, ensure they keep families and friends together, treat the injured, heal the sick and then provide them all a safe place to live out their lives freely, is nothing short of miraculous. Check out Skydog Sanctuary, I guarantee you will be changed by what you see, hear and read.

I first heard about Skydog in 2017 from a Gerard Butler photo with the Skydog foals. It was intriguing to me so I Googled the charity and started to donate to help these wild horses who were being chased down by helicopters, separated from their families, penned up and sold at auctions often times to kill buyers for their meat in other countries where it is legal. I have never been disappointed by the goodness, love and care that each of the Skydog rescues receive and how they thrive. God Bless the dedicated humans who strive to rescue these wild horses from a life of devastation, mistreatment and sometimes death forced upon them by our government.

I love all animals, but everybody must decide where they can best focus. Fortunately, those of us who can’t rescue horses first hand have Skydog, a dedicate mustang, horse, and burro rescue and sanctuary. They take the broken ones, the impossible saves, the ones bound for slaughter, and the damaged. They help them and nourish them and let them find their free spirits again. They reunite families, allow friends to stay together and make all of us donors believe the impossible can happen! We have seen it time and time again. We all feel that we are a part and that we are there watching the horses run free in the huge pastures. One of the best rescue/sancuaries I have ever known.

I am a route 91 shooting victim and as a part of my therapy I worked with mustangs who played an instrumental role in helping me heal from the trauma I’ve experienced.

I came across Skydog Sanctuary through social media and sent the owner Clare an email about my story and she responded immediately and invited me to her ranch in Malibu so I could interact with her mustangs.

Skydog Sanctuary is a forever home for wild mustangs who have experienced many forms of physical and emotional trauma. Many don’t realize how relational horses are and when they are ripped from their families to be placed in holding facilities it is tragic.
Not only are many hurt or killed but the ones who actually make it are forever changed. Then to make matters even worse. They are adopted out to people who are inexperienced, and the horses end up being neglected, abused or starved and then sent to auction at reduced prices which attract kill buyers who load the horses on a truck and send them to Canada or Mexico where horse meat is used for human consumption.

So for me, Clare’s herd and I have a lot in common and through my interactions with them I feel a bond to Skydog that has forever changed me.

I’ve have had the honor of personally volunteering at Skydog Sanctuary in Malibu, Oregon and Miraposa. I also donate regularly through Patreon and whenever possible I jump at the chance to donate to Skydog so I can be apart of saving more mustangs and donkeys.

This Sanctuary is unique and I believe it’s because Clare’s passion and positive spirit. It’s contagious and I’m not the only one that feels it. I honestly think when new horses arrive they feel the same energy and instantly let their guard down knowing they are some place extraordinarily special.

Being a part of the Skydog family and being able to interact and touch these amazing majestic horses as they live in peace without fear that their freedom ever being taken away is an honor and blessing. #mustangsheal #mustangstrong

Skydog Sanctuary is a wonderful organization who works extremely hard to both save at risk Mustangs and Burros AND advocate for on the range management and fair treatment if our wild horses and Burros.
I see first hand how much time, effort, and passion goes into their work.
Clare Staples is seemingly tireless, and a more committed person you will never meet.
The current staff at the Ranch is also amazing, putting in extra time and hours, all to help the horses.
I also love how Clare and Skydog promote and practice cooperation between different organizations.
All in allIcannot say enough good things about Skydog, and I feel privileged to do my small part

My experience with Clare Staples and Skydog Sanctuary has been entirely virtual (so far). I am moved by her hard work behind the passion to help horses and burros in need. Her heart is in the right place and it shows in the faces of the animals she's saved from an unfair, horrible fate.

I've been following Skydog from almost the beginning, and I always felt the organization was special, unlike other rescues. The team at Skydog is so passionate about mustangs' (and all animals') welfare, and they show their dedication and devotion every single day.
I gladly donate monthly to Skydog because I know their care and love for the horses in their care (and future ones) knows no bounds. The organization is so clear about the values and role it plays within the community and it's all about giving, caring and sharing, which are such fantastic values for any human being to embody. Skydog keeps growing and attracting more volunteers who also learn about mustangs. It's a win-win for all.

I can tell you first hand. I am a volunteer at Skydog Sanctuary in Malibu, Ca. What an amazing organization. The love and dedication for these beautiful horses is unappreciated. Clare, her Board of Directors, family, staff and volunteers are more than deducted. To be at the Ranch in person is an experience that has no words. Peaceful, calming, energizing, hopeful, love and more love. The horses are well taken care of and allowed to run free when they wish. The education Clare presents with each rescue is so very full of knowledge, including all of the who, where, what when and why's needed for every life she encounters. She is kind and giving to each rescue. IF you watch the many videos, you will see theses wild Mustangs, they come to her voice. They trust her. They know they are safe and finally home. You will see this in all of her locations. Just watch.
My ONLY heartbreak, is that I, personally, can not do more for her in her quest to rescue and give the love and homes to these majestic animals.
I have never encountered a non profit that has NO agenda.
Skydog Sanctuary...has no personal agenda.
These Mustangs, as well as a few other critters, are home. They are safe. They are loved.

I learned about Skydog a few years ago and watched via social media as horses were rescued. As I watched, I learned, and did research on my own. I was not a donor or volunteer right away, but I simply enjoyed watching and learning. The more I watched and listened, the more impressed I became with the way Skydog carried out its mission. So I became a donor, and then a volunteer (or maybe the other way around). I now know some of the people that make the Skydog wheels turn and can not say enough to commend them for their dedication to their stated mission and for the spirit in which they carry it out.

I can not emphasize enough how all involved with Skydog are such devoted, compassionate, doting and caring individuals. It's funny how things connect, it is quite a funny story on what brought me to Skydog in the first place. At first I was just curious & intrigued. Soon they ran their first auction & I private messaged them suggestions-not expecting any return comment. Then later-I realized it was Clare, the founder herself-responding. It made it more real & I found myself hooked.

Soon after they asked for funds to rescue the lovely but abused Honey. I had just won money at the casino & I donated it to her rescue. I was hooked, it was fate.

Since then I have followed every story, every rescue, every story regardless of ending. I was pulled in and offered my services. I now sponsor one of the beautiful creatures & I cannot be happier.

Skydog works hard to rescue the abused, neglected, & special cases. Clare & her staff are highly competent, compassionate, & driven. They work tirelessly to make a difference. They have such energy, focus, & love for their cause. It resonates with you.

The transparency is amazing as well as clear. You know what they do, where the money goes to, how it is spent. They have accountability, & are not afraid to answer tough questions. You never worry about how much of your donation/sponsorship is actually spent on the creatures-because Clare will tell you.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Skydog, the staff, & Clare. I wish them all the best & I will continue to fund them-Always.

Sky Dog Sanctuary is a non-profit Wild Horse Rescue. They are located in Malibu CA and have a ranch near Bend Oregon. They are a forever home for wild mustangs which they have rescued from kill pens, auctions and starved and neglected horses from horrific home situations. They also focus on promoting BLM adoptions of wild horses from holding pens and help to educate people on this process. They aim to reunite families and mustangs that have been rounded up and separated. This is a wonderful non-profit sanctuary. Sky Dog Sanctuary is very worthy of receiving your Great Non-Profit Badge. God bless this sanctuary for all they do for these wonderful majestic animals. Yvonne and Maurice Kirby

The Sky Dog Sanctuary for Wild Mustangs is a dream come true for the Founder and for those who are captured readers of the posts about the rescued formerly wild mustangs getting to live in situation that is taking care of their needs, but allowing them to live in their natural ways in newly formed herds. The Founder has a compassionate heart, but is realistic and stallions are gelded to maintain population control. Great lengths were taken to reunite Goliath with his Red Lady who had Goliath's son, Bodhi after the pregnant Red Lady was reunited with Goliath. That is one of many warm stories of the mustangs who were rescued and brought to one of several Sky Dog sanctuary sites. This is a stable and secure sanctuary that teaches the general public readers about how the mustangs would live in a natural way. They are doing an amazing work of love and healing.

Not only do they rescue mustangs who have such a part in the history of our country but try to educate folks unfamiliar with the practices of the BLM and the fact that YES our horses are sent to slaughter across the borders to the north and south!!
I am so thankful for the dedication and devotion SkyDog sanctuary offers to these deserving horses and donkeys too.

We first learned of Skydog Sanctuary when they were in the process of saving, READ, a mustang in an urgent situation whose very dramatic photo showed a large crevice in his face where his halter had been embedded.
Since then, we have assisted Skydog in rescuing several mustangs including Dream, the starved mustang mare, Sarge, the mustang with curable cancer, the 3 BLM donkeys in a kill pen... with over 80 horses in their care, Skydog has many, many rescue stories.
All of the equines in the care of Skydog have all treatments needed for ultimate health, there is a farrier on staff and vets on the ready - but mostly, the horses live in vital health because they are free to roam in family groups on the 9000 acre ranch.
My favorite aspect of Skydog is their tenacity in trying to reunite mustang family members. This is an extremely difficult task, but they do it. Amazing.
--I've been on their premises, and I can vouch for the ethical nature of all present, the cleanliness and beauty of the facilities.
Top notch.
