Mission: The sight center provides specialized vision services to people of all ages who are blind and visually impaired with help and hope for continued independence. Services include low vision clinic, rehabilitation teaching, orientation and mobility, children's services, activities of daily living, technology resources, satellite locations, and communications programs.
Programs: Vision rehabilitation services: the sight center provided vision rehabilitation services to 578 people during 2014. These services include training on magnifiers, cctv's, monoculars and other magnification devices. Discussion of proper lighting, filters to shield the eyes from uv rays or assist with light sensitivities and fitting of eyeglasses are other pieces to the vision rehab puzzle. A person who comes through our low vision clinic will leave with equipment to trial and appointments for home visits if needed.
assistive technology training: assistive technology can be used at home, school or work. Computers are a key to being successful in today's society, but using them with little or no vision can be difficult. Our assistive technology coordinator evaluates each person's needs and tailors training to that individual. There is software available to read the screen and others that will enlarge or change the contrast for easier viewing. With tablets and smartphones, there are even more options available to help keep someone with a vision impairment or blindness independent and employable.
rehabilitation training: this program assists a person with low vision or blindness to remain independent with all daily living skills. Everyone needs to be able to match their clothing, cook a meal, safely manage their medications, pay bills and do laundry. These tasks may seem simple but can be a challenge without vision. Our staff members assist by marking appliances, showing how to use simple tools and many other methods that keep our clients safe and independent in their own homes.
