The Swedish American Museum hires numerous part time employees as contractors, most notably in the children's museum and programs, in order to save money and avoid paying associated payroll taxes. These employees are not listed on the 990. The "contractor" classification is illegal and provides the opportunity for the museum to skirt the Chicago minimum wage laws. Typically the part time employees are young and may not be aware they cannot legally be "contractors" because their hours and duties are strictly regulated by the executive director. Since the part time employees do not have outside businesses and do not create invoices, they are asked to sign documents requesting payment.
