I’ve have been apart of the MAI family for 10+ years.
Over the years I’ve studied piano and voice.
In my Opinion this has been the best musical learning experience I could have been apart of!
Not only do they want each and every one of their students to be successful in their learning at MAI, but also they care about each student individually beyond the 4 walls!
I love MAI, and I believe anyone who has a musical gift, or interest should study with them.

Musical Arts Institute is a magical place where inner city children in Chicago receive the gift of musical education. The teachers in MAI are wonderful. They and the entire staff of the school are committed to providing the students with much more than instruction in their particular musical instrument. Musical education at Musical Arts Institute includes access to first rate performances as well as opportunities to perform, classes in musical theory, master classes by renown musicians, and even helping students apply to college with many receiving scholarships. This is not an elitist institution where few can afford, but MAI is committed to making music education available to any child that wants it. The amazingly talented student body there is testimony to the extensive outreach MAI performs in Chicago schools and neighborhoods.

If you have a child who loves music--take her/him to Musical Arts Institute. You won't regret. Even if you don't have children--look up Musical Arts Institute and come to one of the wonderful (and free) performances offered there. You will see for yourself--it is a truly magical place!

Well in my opinion it is a premier organization that reaches far beyond the four walls of the MAI building. I have seen lives change, friendships grow, the reaction of students faces when they have accomplished a task(scale, rudiment, piece of music etc...). Lana and Mike along with the staff and team are an awesome body of facilitators in their professional expertise field. I have been a Piano Instructor here for almost a year and the work that I have seen done here has been phenomenal. At the Musical Arts Institute they really do believe in every child, teen, and adult that walks into these doors. They strive to make great talent out of each person here and make sure to retain a family like feeling within the music community here. On the academic end of the institute they strive to get the best teacher for each student so that way everyone can have the special attention they need to become a success. Even in my little time here I have seen students grow so much and love to see their reactions when they realize they have started to grow and want to tell you about it. I also love the what I call the accidental lessons that are given around here. I call them accidental lessons because MAI has a lot of talented musicians in the lobby a lot at one time which always sparks conversation and debate about the art form which if you are a person who loves to learn, which most of us are, you pick up on a lot of new knowledge just from listening. There are countless things that the Institute does that I could go on and on about. In closing I really do love MAI and all that they do.

My initial experience with MAI was as the parent of a student. The music school was just being organized but the caliber of instruction was superb. It was beyond anything being offered at that time. The instructors were professionals who taught the students not just how to play an instrument but how to hone a craft, how to nurture and develop a gift and in doing so how to grow themselves. After graduating from parent of a student to board member I’ve had the opportunity to watch the owners and administrators work tirelessly to shape and build an institution that serves the student, the family and the community. I believe that MAI has changed lives in a profound way, as only art can do.

As a musician, former board member and a child of classically trained musicians, I have great respect for their leadership at Musical Arts Institute (MAI). I’ve known Mike and Lana Manson for decades, as well as Lana’s mother, who happened to be good friends with my parents because of their mutual musical gifts. Excellence is who they are and what MAI is built on. Some music schools teach you how to play, but MAI teaches you to analyze and interpret the music the way it was intended to be played. The love that MAI has for passing the baton to the next generation comes from a genuine passion for their students growth. They understand that musical discipline creates a foundation for discipline in all areas of an individual’s life. I recommend MAI every chance I get because I know what they stand for, what they teach and the integrity that emanates from leadership and the school.

Michael and Lana Manson and the MAI Staff continue to open pathways for those who love music and for those who discover themselves in the midst of this pursuit. Now a Junior at the University of Notre Dame with a double major which includes music and also performing with their Folk Choir, our daughter continues to grow and develop her skillset because of the personalized and dedicated instruction and support that she received at MAI. The Musical Arts Institute lives by their Moto of "Changing Lives One Note At A Time". I have first hand witnessed the passion they have for the community they serve. Rather it be through music lessons/classes to young and old, or the many community outreach events they hold. They have shown me through their actions that the mission is to enrich the underserved communities that surround them.

The joy that I see on the faces of the children when they are being taught music is amazing. Music can cross all barriers, and they are removing these barriers through music. Showing children that there is more to life than what they see in front of them or in their communities.

This program allows for African American youth to play and reveal their talents and experience playing different genres of music. Mr. Manson has taken this
elite group of orchestra players and given them opportunities to show their talents to the City of Chicago. MAI has become apart of our family and we are truly blessed to be apart of this program. As a long time supporter of the Musical Arts Institue and someone who works in the community in which they serve, I have seen firsthand the impact the school has had on our community's youth. Their love for music, education, and young people is exemplified in their quality of affordable musical education. Our community is often underserved when it comes to the arts, and Musical Arts Institute fills the void with an excellent curriculum and instructors who bring out the hidden talents within their students, which allows them to discover the joy of music and learning. With this newfound gift, the children excel in music and the classroom, which translates into new affirming opportunities for growth. I am grateful for the work that Lana and Micheal Manson are doing and will continue to support them and encourage others to do the same.

Music Arts Institute is an amazing experience for any person interested in the fine arts. My daughter has been taking lessons for more than 3 years. I see the affect in her interest in music in her self esteem, confidence and posture. Through the encouragement of her teacher she has learning what I consider the impossible for a child of her ethnic background and social status. She's playing the violin. I'm always amazed at her enthusiasm when it's time for her lesson. But the biggest advantage is the patience, empathy and positive attitude of her teacher. The teachers that have worked with her from her piano instructor to her current violin instructor Mr. Manson has made playing an instrument so much fun. I see the results when she actually practice at home. I also as I mentioned earlier see the positive influence of fine arts in her studies at school because studying music has helped her focus and concentration especially in math. She is an honors student. Lastly, the people at Music Arts Institute has become part of my family. We are not a business transaction but a community, a village. I see that especially now during this pandemic season. MAI's interest and resources in being part of our children's success story always amaze me when former classmates visit and gives their story. We dont have a lot of extracurricular activities in our community, so it's great to have one where the people in it are dedicated to giving of their talent, time and themselves.

He has brought out a confidence and talent in my daughter that I did not know was there. All the staff and teachers are very patient, personable and supportive of their students and do their best to take them to a different level in music. Their recitals that they showcase the students' talents are beyond words. They teach the students how to present themselves and do their best, which is awesome. My child is very shy and I see a difference in her pose and attitude towards herself and it has spilled over into her social life. Even her teachers and counselor at school are seeing a subtile difference in her confidence and have comment on it. Her grades are even better because she believes in herself. This is a great Music school and I would recommend it to all potential music student of any age.

I joined the Musical Arts Institute my junior year of high school. I was just starting up my own string ensemble at my school and we were debuting for the first time. At the time, the Musical Arts Institute's string ensemble had joined to help my school ensemble and it all turned out great.

That was the first year of me not being in an ensemble or orchestra outside of school, this was all because of issues with time and then I also stopped attending my private lessons. With the kind of school hours I had AND after school activities, I would be getting home around 8pm or 9pm at the latest (on a regular day).

Mr. Michael Manson from MAI was concerned for my well-being as a violinist and encouraged me to play in the MAI string ensemble. If I joined the string ensemble, that would enable me a scholarship that doesn't have me pay for my private violin lessons. I just had to attend rehearsal once a week every Sunday. I decided to join the following year after consulting with my parents and a friend I had made from the ensemble.

The music was a little challenging for me, especially considering I couldn't make enough practice time for myself. However, I tried to make it work and Mr. Manson and my teacher Ms. Lennette Neal pushed me to be a better musician. They teach you more professional levels of musicianship, push you to be more creative, and all while having fun. I made more friends and saw an old friend from my previous orchestra (the music world is pretty small). And, it meant more being that we were all musicians of color. Mr. Manson made a point of searching for black composers for us to play and expose to our community. I could see how much the students and their parents really enjoy hearing from the Musical Arts Institute as a whole.

Overall, I had a great experience. I wish I would've known and joined sooner.

My 5 star rating has no boundaries! When it comes to the successful stories of Musical Arts Institute here in Chicago, Illinois. This Husband and Wife team, Michael and Lana Manson, have gone beyond expectations; with a robust educational plan in music. I firmly believe in the educational process and the plans provided by Michael and Lana, because their success stories have gone leaps and bounds, in terms of college preparatory; and a holistic outlook on life in general. The Musical Arts Institute -
Michael and Lana Manson, have successfully created the right formula, to address inner-city youth issues, here in Chicago. The experience of a musical education, helps students to better prepare for college! In fact many students, have chosen other professions, as other career choices of interest, after entering into college. However, this option is provided by way of the motivated efforts of the Musical Arts Institute experience. With precision focus, a musical education, has a proven pathway in helping to guide our missed guided, and under-educated youth of today! These students, who are engaged in music, are well motivated and prepared through the Musical Arts Institute, holistic experience.
Last, The Musical Arts Institute, can not do this alone.
We need, Sustainability, Partnerships, and Corporate, entities, to continue our successful mission, in helping our inner-city youth, to become great agents of change...

The Musical Arts Institute has been a blessing! When my grandson entered high school two years ago, his misic class was the introduction of his first hands on experience with musical instruments. He chose the violin but his class was not enough. He really wanted to play the violin. I searched websites and asked friends about where he could take violin lessons. The Musical Arts Institute came highly recommended and I could not be more pleased. I am amazed at his progress since being a student at MAI. He has had excellent instruction and scheduling of sessions, particularly make up sessions, are accommodating. Individual instruction is awesome, but being able to participate in the ensemble on Sunday evenings is priceless. At MAI you walk into an atmosphere of professionalism, calm, and a since of belonging. If you desire to learn how to play an instrument or develop your voice to become the vocalist you image. The arts play such an important role in the development of our children--their thinking, problem solving, self esteem and even the way they present themselves to the world. Unfortunately, because it is so misunderstood, the arts are also one of the first things to be cut from our schools' curriculum.
The Musical Arts Institute has brought not only an otherwise missing art form to our children, but instills the importance of excellence that translates into all the other areas of their lives--I've seen it in my own child! There was no doubt in my mind that having my son take lessons at MAI would be a great decision. I have not been disappointed and the progress my son has made over the past few months is phenomenal I would recommend this school to anyone who is the least bit interested in music for any instrument and even vocal..

The Musical Arts Institute really helped me become a much more proficient trombone player and I really needed it especially since I go to ChiArts, which is a performing arts high school here in Chicago. The help I receive from my private lessons teacher helps me with all the music I see from school. Me, family, and friends all noticed improvements in how I play and thats because of my work, but also the environment here at the Musical Arts Institute.

At first I thought I didn't need lessons. I thought that my playing was already at it's peak. But, after coming to the Musical Arts Institute, I learned I was extremely far from what I thought. I learned how difficult it was for me to play with two hands. My teacher Ms. Lindsey helped me improve a lot with using both hands on the piano. But, even with all my experience, simple looking songs were surprisingly difficult to actually play. I was surprised with how much I did not know about playing the piano. I now know that I have learned a lot and still have a lot to learn. I am glad that I came to the Musical Arts Institute to greatly improve my abilities.

I have two children taking music lesson with Mr. Manson, the school has helped them a lot in developing their music skills. Mr. Manson is very patient with them and has taught them how to read music, which they did not know prior to attending the school which was done quickly. What I like most about this school is the ability to play all kinds of music. Musical Arts Institute is a great school to attend if you wish to see growth with your child/children they will be groom to be an excellent musician. The school has high expectations for all students. Mr. Manson, shows a lot of concern for the kids and goes out of his way to meet every child needs to make sure they have a pleasant experience at the school. I recommend this school to everyone.

I have been attending Musical Arts Institute for about 3 and a half years. From the time I started to now, I feel I have truly grown with my musicianship and musical knowledge overall. My music teachers are Ms. Lana Manson and Mr. Michael Manson and they have both been very supportive of me with every lesson. I have learned much repertoire in Italian songs and spirituals in my vocal lessons which helped me get into my dream high school, ChiArts. I have learned scales and bass fitness in my bass guitar lessons. MAI has taught me to be confident and expressive with my music and to just make it my own when I perform. I love the performance opportunities they provide throughout the year. It's a really warm and hardworking place for anyone, any age, wanting to soar in this art. They also are preparing me for college.

My sons have been taking lessons at the Musical Arts Institute for more than a year now, and I am so impressed with the progress that both of them have made so far. The Musical Arts Institute has a very home-like atmosphere and all the instructors are very professional and down to earth. My husband and I have made a great choice in choosing Musical Arts Institute as a place where our sons are not only learning how to play music, but they are getting educated in the theory of music as well. Kudos to Mr. and Mrs. Manson for opening this school and to Mr Berry and Mrs. Lindsey for being great instructors!!! We are very satisfied with the

My son, Maxwell, is learning to play the viola with Michael Manson at Musical Arts Institute (MAI). My husband and I wanted our son to learn to play an instrument in an effort to increase his ability to focus as well as his determination to learn new skills. Maxwell's experience with MAI has exceeded our expectations. Maxwell is learning to play the viola, attending lessons and practicing at home with great ease. This has also translated into him starting his homework on his own and taking more ownership of his elementary school education.

I must also praise the teachers and staff at MAI, they are consistently pleasant and informative. It is simply a wonderful, approachable experience. I highly recommend MAI for anyone--young and not-so-young--who would like to learn to play an instrument and/or receive voice lessons.

I consider it a great honor to write a review for Musical Arts Institute. About a year ago my husband and I were looking for a music program for our daughter. Fortunately, we found MAI for piano and vocal training. The Manson's are outstanding in the area a music theory, music instruction, and excellence in stage performance. Our daughter enjoys learning music in an environment that is kind and nurturing. She has had many opportunities to grow and learn in professional settings with world celebrated musicians and vocalists. She is totally engaged in the lessons with instructors. My daughter takes guitar lessons at the MAI. She has really grown in her abilities, and her lessons have helped in other areas (academically, cognitively, etc.). I love that she's also learning music theory, reading and writing music, and receives progress reports from her instructor, which helps a lot with her growth and accountability.

All of the staff at the MAI are music professionals, so substitutions are never a problem if needed, and my daughter learns from everyone, as well as the other students. I strongly believe in arts education, and the training she receives at the MAI, I believe, is superior and will benefit her for life.

The Musical Arts Institute is a hidden secret on the south side of Chicago. It is rare to find people that are passionate about the arts, specifically music, and they want to share their expertise, time and talent with our future, our youth. We were first introduced to the Manson's through a mentoring program that our oldest daughter participated in. It was at that program that Mike and Lana saw a "gift" in our daughter.

Since that time, our oldest daughter has developed so vocally that Mrs. Manson now has her on what she calls her "Senior Track" and she is just a Junior. Since being in the program, our daughter has learned to sing in 2 additional languages and she is now competing for national programs. It is because of the coaching and support given by the Manson's and the entire Musical Arts Institute staff that brings about success.

Since being with the program, we have recommended several youth to the program and they are extremely pleased as well.

My daughter attends a private school that offers music and art, but her school does not have an orchestra. Since my child plays violin, she needed to be in a group with stringed instruments. The Musical Arts Institute (MAI) is changing lives on the Southside of Chicago! By providing music instruction for youth, MAI compensates for a critical element that is missing in public schools today. Learning music is only the tip of the iceberg. MAI's music instruction causes the students to be exposed to other languages, world history, geography, and math to name a few disciplines. And speaking of discipline, the school helps students build study skills and demonstrates how hard work pays off. Mike and Lana Manson are doing a fantastic job! I am so proud to be associated with the Musical Art Institute (MAI). As a Board member, I have seen first-hand the musical impact they have had on students of all ages, including families and the community. MAI is one of the best musical schools to breakthrough in the Chicago area in recent years. Their instructors and staff have passion for their students and are dictated to the community they serve. Their staff is highly qualified and all are professional musicians.
Michael and Lana Manson, the directors, could have opened the school in the suburbs where they grew and live. However, they chose to open the school in the inner city of Chicago, where the need is greater. As a result, they are able to offer musical training to those that may not otherwise be able to afford it or have the artistic experience of the musical arts.
I plan to continue to contribute my time and resources to this much needed organization.

When our daughter, Keita, grew to be 4 years old she became a student under the tutelage of the Manson’s learning the violin. Michael didn't charge us anything, and I new then he truly wanted to teach the art and it wasn’t about money.
