Causes: Civil Rights, Women, Womens Rights
Mission: Cli is formed for the express purpose of research and educational communications on abortion and the right to life as well as the legal defense of freedom of speech.
Programs: Legal defense fund - cli continued to support the free speech project launched in 2010. This project promotes freedom of speech on pro-life issues. Beginning in 2011, cli made grants to a charitable organization that funds legal action against state laws that unconstitutionally restrict the freedom of speech of pro-life groups and other organizations in the public square. During 2014 cli made donations totaling $687,182.
survey & issue research - cli conducted a national survey of men and women of childbearing age to gauge their opinion of and familiarity with work of pregnancy help centers and their competitors. The report will assist centers in extending their already high standing in public opinion and expanding their outreach to women and their families in cases of unexpected pregnancy. Cli (charlotte lozier institute, d/b/a of filing organization) undertook legal research on the potential impact of proposed federal legislation, s. 1696, which would affect laws on abortion in the 50 states. Cli also underwrote research in 2014 on the impact, if any, of state preventive service mandates on abortion and unexpected pregnancy rates in states that adopted such laws prior to the affordable care act.
special project writing - in addition to its other program emphases, cli supports individual ad-hoc writing and research projects on various topics in bioethics and sanctity of human life issues. These projects include policy papers, fact sheets, and commentaries for publication on cli's web site or in the general media (print or electronic), blogs, and other formats. Writers are drawn from the cli's list of expert advisors or others with special skills but no official role with cli. In 2014 special project writing included a report on the impact of the supreme court ruling on major abortion regulations from texas, an update on abortion insurance coverage limits in the states, an update on scientific evidence about the beginning of individual human life, and the evidence that all forms of emergency contraception can act in an abortifacient manner.
