Causes: Arts & Culture, Performing Arts Centers
Mission: Strathmore presents and produces exemplary visual and performing arts programs for diverse audiences, creates dynamic arts education experiences, and nurtures new ideas and conversations that advance the future of the arts.
Programs: Performing arts: strathmore continues to maintain and operate a world-class, 1,976-seat performing arts and education center, for the comfort and enjoyment of nearly 250,000 visitors year round. It is dedicated to inspiring children to expand their creativity and committed to reaching and serving diverse audiences through the presentation of more than 150 concerts, workshops, classes, and festivals each year. In fy 18, strathmore partnered with beth morrison projects and composer jeremy schonfeld to produce an original, world-premiere production entitled iron & coal: survivor and son. This immersive, musical memoir told the story of a father and son living in the shadow of the holocaust. Partnering with artists on new work in very large scale speaks to strathmore's (see schedule o, pg. 45) commitment to fosterprogramming that is distinctive and compelling. Program service accomplishments: strathmore continued programming at its more intimate venues - the historic mansion and at amp. It also presented concerts performed by its six artists in residence as part of its flagship program, created more than a decade ago to support artists as they transition to professional careers. Since its inception in 2005, the program has mentored 76 musicians ages 16-32. Every year a class of six is chosen after a competitive selection program. Strathmore artists in residence benefit from the support of mentor musicians, participate in professional development seminars, and are offered extensive performance opportunities throughout the 10-month program.
retail and operations: strathmore integrates the local artist community into its programs and operations through its gift shop, which features handmade items and work by members of the local craft guilds, its tea room, where local musicians perform weekly, and through its gallery sales program, which features the work of, and provides sales support for, visual artists. Operations continue to efficiently support the increasing number of performances, shows, educational classes and events on the 16 acre campus and at its amp by strathmore location. We annually support nearly 300 shows in strathmore's three venues, concerts for 21,000 montgomery county public school students, and all-campus festivals for thousands of patrons.
visual arts and education: visual arts at strathmore embraces artists in every medium and from every country. In fy18, a series of original exhibitions in the mansion honored seminal artists of our time, brought new audiences to our campus, and helped spotlight talented local artists. This year, strathmore presented works by local glass and multimedia artist eileen martin, italian photographer dario zucchi, jordann wine, emily uchytil, and jeffrey everett. It hosted group shows by the miniature painters, sculptors, and gravers society, washington wax works, the washington calligraphers guild, and an extraordinary exhibition of artist-made kites! Strathmore education created a series of lectures to accompany the original production iron & coal: survivor and son, which explored how to write your (see schedule o, pg. 45)family history and the holocaust in art & culture. In collaboration with mcps and glenstone, strathmore developed and launched the think big cafe for 500 fourth graders in montgomery county, a curriculum-based experiential program designed to expand the students' world-view and capacity for creative expression. And, strathmore continued its east county initiative - a new endeavor to amplify the arts in east montgomery county. We are working with community leaders, teachers, and local businesses to develop affordable and sustainable arts programs that are deeply embedded in the hearts of the east county citizens.
communications: strathmore implemented several innovations to communicate more effectively with its customers and audiences. The strathmore website now offers users seven languages from which to choose to best understand the breadth and variety of its program information. In addition, patrons are now able to print purchased tickets at home and purchasing from strathmore's mobile website has gotten even more robust to accommodate users who may not have a desktop option. Strathmore continues to work with embedded community connectors and curators to ensure that members of diverse communities receive information in the way it is most meaningful to them, whether that is in a special language newspaper, from trusted community conveners through group sales, or in heavily frequented gathering places such as groceries and churches.
