Mission: Assist delinquent and at rist youth and children in juvenile justice system in the realization of their spiritual identity. Utilizing the tools of meditation, dramatic improvisation and creative writing, our programs build character, raise self-esteem, one child at a time. Our mission is to facilitate spiritual transformation and positive social change through the written and spoken word and to create empowering stories for the stage and screen. The foundation exists to be a place for authentic expression.
Programs: Since 1995 spirit awakening foundation (saf) has served over 2000 young people throughout los angeles county. Saf was founded by akuyoe graham, after producing her critically acclaimed one-woman play, spirit awakening, about her journey of self-discovery and spiritual healing. After the play, graham received numerous requests to share her story with students in los angeles. From those experiences, graham was inspired to create an art-based program to help students discover their potential. For 20 years we've worked to transform the lives of children and helped shift the juvenile justice perspective from punitive to restorative. 1)goal for 2017 is to increases internal capacities, including hire 2 more full time staff positions and reallocating akuyoe graham's time to program development and outreach. 2)as part of saf long-term goals we will identify and develop viable sources of revenue to cover our annual operating budget. Revenue from books, strategic partnerships with for-profit companies, public workshops and trainings, virtual curriculum, events and performances, etc. We will also begin actively pursuing large-scale and long-term grant opportunities. 3)spirit house will be a living complex for young people to enter upon release from incareration. Spirit house takes the mission and our transformative work to the next level, giving the youth a place to call home so that they can truly heal, build a healthy life, and have the critically needed structure and support during their young years.
