SomaliCAN provides advocacy, access, and opportunities to strengthen the Somali American Community in central Ohio. I was particularly impressed with the Somali Graduation & Scholarship Program.

I interacted with the leadership of the Somali community in Ohio for the first time at a recent event hosted by Ohio Governor John Kasich. These were polished people with a huge insight on how Ohio, and by extension America, works.

SomaliCAN is a wonderful charity. It is always ahead of the curve in identifying and responding to community needs. In 2009, SomaliCAN focused on safety issues. The organization implemented various initiatives to protect Americans regardless of race. Crime prevention, police training, community outreach, youth summits, and other neighborhood activities were implemented. This was all because the economic downturn has negatively affected the living conditions of many Americans. Crime has gone up as a result. Initiatives like the somalitips.com crime reporting site and law enforcement somali advisory group were great contributors to making Ohio ahead in the fight against all forms of violent crime. In 2010, SomaliCAN focused on community celebrations! As a sign of improving economy, SomaliCAN has initiated the biggest and first ever annual Somali graduation for Somali high school, college and university students. Speakers include Ohio State Superintendent of Education, and Prof. Said Salah, a famous Somali literary scholar. In 2011, SomaliCAN has put in place plans to make Ohio the best place to live, learn and raise a family.
