I have known Earl and Suzanne for over a decade and have visited the projects in Guatemala. They have sustained an expanded project through support with other nonprofits and donations from foundations and companies.
I have seen their gardens and talked with the people. They are doing great work and deserve your support Fred and Nancy
In visiting the demonstration center in Chocola this April, it was apparent the team has a cohesion that drives them to help the community. It was impressive to see the library of resources and different growing methods they showcased in their garden. Learning more about the team, it was inspiring to learn that some team members were founding extensionists and had been with the organization since the start. We also were fortunate to visit one of the program members at her home, where she showed us an assortment of plants she was growing in her garden, which provided well for her family. Overall, the work of Seeds for a Future was so clearly important to their inner team, but also to the extended community of program members. Their approach has proven to be successful in benefitting the lives of rural Guatemalans at a sustainable rate that has been difficult for many other organizations to achieve.
Semillas is doing inspiring work in Guatemala fostering rural community development and improving the livelihoods of thousands of families. They have a holistic approach to food security and long-standing malnutrition that integrates nutrition, education, culture, the environment and micro-business. Their capacity-building program aims to foster first-hand knowledge and self-confidence in the communities, putting the families front and center and encouraging self-reliance. It is very motivating to see the impactful work that Semillas is doing with over two thousand families, and how they have begun replicating their program in four distinct regions of Guatemala. Hopefully, in the near future, it can also be replicated in other communities in Latin America!
Great non-profit doing incredible work around empowering local communities to develop context -appropriate approaches to self-reliance and wellbeing
This is an amazing organizations that does the hard work of researching and immersing themselves in local cultures and traditions to ensure long term success of their programs.
There are a lot of programs that will come in, support the community for a couple weeks, and leave - providing no long term structure or success.
Seeds for the Future is the opposite - as it should be!
Semilla does incredible community work that centers the needs and desires of the community itself. A truly great organization. So excited to buy their forthcoming cookbook!!
Wow these guys are unlike most of the nonprofits I've encountered in Guatemala. They work in a very rural, tropical area where most nonprofits do not venture. They are truly embedded in the local community—basically all of their staff is local and indigenous. And they've been working with these families for over a decade. This is one of those unique programs that is actually taking a holistic, locally-led approach to community development. We need more like it!
Seeds for a Future has a long track record of transforming families and communities to live healthier and self-reliant lives through its training and coaching programs. Its focus on nutritional health, permaculture practices, and micro-business opportunities provide the tools for long-term solutions to address food security and income generation in an area where options are limited. This program can be replicated in communities worldwide and is a valuable contribution to solving issues that were once felt unsolvable.
I visited Chocola, Guatemala in 2010 and witnessed firsthand the positive impact Seeds was already having on the community — and on individual people, particularly women and young children, who are some of the most vulnerable community members. I admired an impressive garden, but more impressive were the clever ways people had learned to grow vegetables in very small spaces and within repurposed containers such as liter soda bottles! I like the Seeds approach of giving individuals, families, and by extension rural communities, a straightforward helping hand so that they can truly help themselves. I saw kindness and transparency in the relationships between Seeds and local Guatemalans. I highly recommend this nonprofit!
