Mission: It is the purpose of the portland youth philharmonic association to maintain the finest possible youth orchestras in order to inspire and educate young people through performing symphonic music and to provide a cultural asset for the community.
Programs: In 2016-2017, over 300 students were enrolled in one of pyp's four large ensembles: young string ensemble, wind ensemble, conservatory orchestra, and philharmonic orchestra. Additionally, camerata pyp, a chamber orchestra, consists of top musicians concurrently enrolled in the philharmonic orchestra. Pyp produced 11 ticketed and 6 free-admission concerts to the general public featuring these ensembles, in various locations in portland, corvallis, newberg, forest grove, hood river, and vancouver, wa. Pyp offers free conductor visits to regional middle and high school bands and orchestras, free bass and percussion classes for beginners, low-cost peer mentor lessons, and four annual free-admission children's concerts for regional elementary and middle school classes.
