Causes: Arts & Culture, Theater
Mission: The poetry society advances the arts and educates the public about poetry by (i) conducting poetry readings, festivals, installations, performances and other similar events, (ii) publishing poems, poetry journals and books, (iii) mentoring poets, reviewing their work, and providing career guidance, (iv) conducting classes, lectures and seminars about poetry, (v) conducting a poet residency program, (vi) granting awards to individuals for poetic merit and achievements in poetry.
Programs: Poetry brothel - performance events at which poets, dressed and in character as courtesans, perform poetry readings for attendees. These events have been conducted monthly.
poetry festival - a two-day new york city poetry festival on nyc governor's island. Festivals are free to attend and they feature poetry readings by approximately 250 poets, open mic poetry readings, and a children's festival where children can participate in various poetry-related activities.
