Mission: Providing platforms that expand, inspire, educate and connect the international photography community. Dedicated to increasing awareness of our society through photography, providing opportunities to committed photographers through programs, scholarships and book distribution.
Programs: Critical mass - an annual online program that makes connections within the photography community. Photographers at any level, from anywhere in the world, submit a portfolio of 10 images. Through a pre-screening process, the field is narrowed to a group of 200 finalists who go on to have their work viewed and voted on by over 200 esteemed international photography professionals. From the finalist group, the top 50 are named, and a series of awards are given, including at least one monograph each year.
portfolio reviews festival - every other april, an international set of photographers and reviewers gather in portland, or for a five-day celebration of photography that includes lectures, workshops, and exhibition collaborations. Intensive portfolio reviews are at the heart of the festival. Reviewers are selected for their experience, involvement, and commitment to advancing the work of emerging and mid-career artists. Over the years, many participants have made contacts that have led directly to exhibitions, publications, and sales, in addition to receiving useful critiques. By providing a venue for in-depth, informed, and supportive dialogue between photographers, gallery owners, curators, publishers, editors, and consultants, photolucida promotes the culture of photography locally, nationally, and internationally.
portland photo month - a city-wide celebration of the art, history and practice of photography that happens annually, every april. Exhibitions, discussions, and workshops are offered through various portland organizations and institutions, including photolucida. Photolucida spearheads this event, providing public relations and maintaining the portland photo month website as a service to the community to promote awareness of photography-related public events.
publishing - photolucida publishes and distributes the critical mass book award winner's book(s), giving copies of the book(s) to all participating photographers and jurors, nationally and internationally. Annually, these monographs are donated to over 100 oregon art schools, colleges, and libraries, as well as international museums and educational institutions.
