Mission: The old town school of folk music teaches and celebrates music and cultural expressions rooted in the traditions of diverse american and global communities.
Programs: Art instruction: all of old town school of folk music's accredited instrumental, dance, music, and ancillary programs are designed to stimulate creativity and communal arts participation among people of all ages. In 2017, nearly 15,000 students made 25,300 registrations for group classes, 6,600 for private lessons, 2,300 for workshops, and 200 for summer camp. More than 7,000 attended student showcases, teen open mic, socials, and jams.
concerts: old town school of folk music is one of the region's most prolific concert venues, featuring well known headliners, as well as concerts by local and global artists, often co-produced with dozens of local community service and arts organizations. In 2017, 45,500 attended 165 concerts, and approximately 30,600 attended the square roots festival.
outreach: old town school of folk music serves thousands of chicago's children each year, providing arts education programming throughout the city. In 2017, 8,600 attended field trip events, 4,400 children/youth participated in the artist in residence creative school fund programs in chicago public schools lawndale's carole robertson center for learning, and the arts and community wellness initiative in englewood. 9,700 attended world music series and global dance party concerts, and approximately 33,100 attended various events throughout the chicagoland area that included performances booked through the artist engagament/referral program.
other program services: old town school of folk music's campus includes a retail music store and a caf, which provide instruments for purchase or rental to our students, as well as healthy food options for the old town school community.
