Mission: The museum's mission is to inspire all californians to create a more vibrant future for themselves and their communities. Through collections, exhibitions, education programs, and public dialogue, we inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to think creatively and critically about the natural, artistic, and social forces that characterize our state and influence its relationship to the world.
Programs: Exhibitions and programs: the oakland museum of california (omca) presented a range of exhibitions, public programs, and educational offerings in fy16-17, serving 215,000 visitors onsite, including approximately 34,000 school children and educators, as well as thousands more in the community. Major exhibitions included " black panthers", "out of the box and "roy deforest". Major public programs included the weekly "friday nights @ omca;" the annual community celebrations for summer reading, days of the dead, and lunar new year; and "omca connect," the community engagement initiative. The museum measures its success in terms of number of visitors and members, contributions to the museum field, critical and media response to exhibitions, and visitor comments and feedback.
public information: the museum has a very active program of public information that includes the omca web site (www. Museumca. Org), social media, a members' emag, and press releases and media announcements. In 2016-2017, the museum continued to enhance its web site and social media presence, updated its communications strategy based on substantive audience research, and continued to roll-out a major institutional marketing campaign.
guilds and councils: the museum has been supported by a docent corps of some 300 actively touring docents, and the council on architecture that provides monthly tours of the museum's landmark building. Docent tours serve more than 42,000 school children, adults and families annually. Through the first nine months of the fiscal year ended 6/30/17, there were three volunteer guilds (art, history and natural sciences) whose activities included local, national and international tours and trips related to the museum's mission. The guilds also provided support to the programs of the three collecting disciplines at the museum. The three guiilds were discontinued in the fourth quarter of the fiscal year ended 6/30/17 and all remaining guild funds were contributed as an endowment to omca.
