JSA is an incredible organization because it changes one's perspective. Through debating and meeting a diverse array of people, JSA challenges people academically, socially, and personally. JSA gives people knowledge to do so much more than just compete on Capitol Hill, but to be informed and ethical global citizens. Enough said. Join JSA

This long-standing organization changes the lives of young people. I know because I was one of them. As a high school student, quiet, reserved and an introvert by nature, I joined this organization because it fostered thinking AND debate, and I found my voice. 35+ years later, I still have it. Further, the organization's programs allowed me to develop relationships I still hold today. I volunteer for the Board today because I owe credit to this great organization. JSA is a great nonprofit.

I first became involved with JSA as a high school student and remain involved as a trustee and donor. On a personal level, JSA changed the trajectory of my life. But more importantly, JSA has been doing the hard work of making democracy work for decades, a mission that has become all the more important in recent years.

I have had experience with this non-profit for 45 years--beginning with my participating in its programming during my high school years to more recently serving as a Board Member. JSA does remarkable work helping high school students understand the importance of civil engagement how to do so in a constructive and powerful way. The organization has pivoted during Covid in a remarkable way, from in person convening to on-line gatherings.

It is a remarkable organization and I am proud to be on the Board.

As an alumna of the Junior State programs as well as the daughter-in-law of A JSA alumnus and the parent of two JSA alumni I cannot say enough about this organization. Junior State of America celebrates youth from all political perspectives and supports their engagement in civil discourse and peaceful action. JSA prepares the youth of today to be the leaders we need tomorrow. I can say in all honesty, I would not be the person I am today without having participated in Junior State as a high school student.

Amazing youth organization. I got involved with JSA a few years ago through a friend and it has since then become a place I regularly find inspiration and deep engagement with impressive young people. I am 42 years old and have worked across much of the world making social issue documentaries, shooting ad campaigns for international brands, and trying my best to help build the world I want to live in. But in the last few years I realized I wanted to get more involved back at home in the US. There are so many reasons to feel frustrated by our political polarization, and what feels at times like a broken political system, so I was looking for a way that I might get involved that felt productive and didn't drain me of all hope and happiness. Enter JSA. Not only has working with and supporting youth in their exploration of civic learning, cross-cultural understanding, facts based debate, and simply learning how to listen to a different perspective, helped me engage with the world in a healthier way, I can honestly say that engaging with JSA students uplifts my spirits and gives me a lot of hope for the future. We need more organizations like JSA, and I now firmly believe the only way out of the current messes humanity finds itself in, are through how we teach the next generation of leaders to engage, listen, and understanding each other. I see JSA youth coming at problems from the perspective of how they can work together on what they agree on, rather than following the current discord of just ranting about what we disagree on. Wish I'd known about this organization when I was younger, and particularly as a Latino who never got to participate in anything like this in high school, I'm excited JSA is actively working on making the organization, and it's services, more accessible to a wider range of students. This is now what excites me the most about JSA: helping them become more accessible to everyone.

JSA's mission of preparing young people to be engaged participants in our democratic society is critical in this era, and the organization does an amazing job training and educating high school students. Moreover, as young people take on the responsibility of running their "junior state" they gain valuable skills that will serve them well for life. I know this first hand as I was a JSA member when I was in high school. I find myself using the lessons I learned in JSA frequently. Moreover, the fantastic network of people I gained decades ago is still active and in my personal and professional life today.

I am 75 years old, but my experience with JSA as a high school student has influenced my life ever since. I learned the facts of our government as well as the art of governing, using the annual convention in Sacramento to bring items to the floor for consideration. JSA summer school taught the constitution to me, and the founders' thoughts embedded in it. I have actively followed, and participated in politics ever since. I am proud to say that I have never failed to vote in an election since my 18th birthday, many years ago. The influence of JSA on my life has indeed endured!

Back when I was a sophomore in high school, many of my classmates decided that drinking alcohol was the only thing they wanted to do on weekends. In addition to learning about politics and public speaking, the Junior State introduced me to dozens of potential friends who were interested in so much more than getting wasted. High Schools can be very limiting environments, and allowing students to mingle with a larger group of people, for an intelligent purpose, can make a huge difference to anyone who's struggling with social issues. I wasn't the only one from my school who benefited from JSA's activities.

This organization helped me foster my voice and passion for civic engagement. I had the opportunity to develop leadership skills and shoulder several “adult” responsibilities by serving on state cabinet and as a Chapter President of a student-run club. I would not be the same confident young woman if it weren’t for the amazing experiences I had throughout my four years in this organization. JSA gave me friends for life, and it is especially important now more than ever that we provide students with an environment where they can grow politically and develop the confidence to let their voices.

To " Make Democracy Work"

As a member of the very first girls' Summer School class (an 8 week residential program in 1946, held at Mills college, Oakland CA) this was a thrilling and life-expanding experience not only for me, but for 23 other teen-age girls brought together from throughout California.

The impact of that JSA summer, and subsequent involvement with JSA activities and friends, followed by civic involvement in all the years since, has remained an important part of my life for more than 70 years! Thank you JSA!

When I found out about JSA, I knew it was a program I had to get involved in. As a mock trial, and debate student, and having immense interest in social sciences it was exactly the opportunity I was looking for. However all opportunities come with a cost, and JSA's tuition cost was unfortunately out of my bounds, with then recent financial struggle that me and my family were going through. But I worked hard, and decided that I was going to participate in this educational program no matter what, and I was happy to have been in touch with some of the most understanding and supporting people/staff of JSA. They accommodated me as much as they could, and went the extra mile for me, so I would get to participate in the program. This opportunity changed my dreams, it not only helped me better understand what I want to do in the future, but it made me understand just how much I can do now at my age. And yes I knew anything is possible so long as you put your mind to it, but this program reinforced how much power I as a teen, had to make changes to my environment, to help people, to achieve my dreams before I become old. It is also what gave me further motivation to work harder towards my educational and career goals. Since then I have shared my knowledge and experience with many of my friends and classmates, to motivate them towards their goals. Also in JSA I was fortunate to make soo many new friends, valuable friends that I still keep in touch with, and we help each other on college apps, and questions. I met some of the best students from all around the world, with different dreams, ideas, and interests. I personally love diversity, because its I think one thing that makes things more interesting, I love sharing ideas, because from multiple ideas and interests there is so many new things one can create. I personally was part of the JSA summer program at Stanford University, were I got to know the campus and college life better, and so I can say that when I go to college, I will be much more comfortable with the idea. JSA staff were very supportive during the program and in a funny way I found myself saying over and over again that they were my second family in a sense. While they are serious, and they create the opportunities for us to meet notable representatives congressman and many other politicians, from whom we can learn more, and provide professors who teach us how to properly debate and think regarding politics without dismissing the other side, they are also very goofy, and fun. They make the whole experience even better, with their trips around the school, to museums, and cities. My time in JSA was one of the best times I ever had in my entire life. I strongly recommend any student or teen to this program, and it doesn't matter if you want to become. a lawyer, artist, businessman, or musician, this program is for every student, because it teaches about thought, analysis, morals, and basics of politics that all people should know.

JSA truly changed my life. My high school experience went from a small box to seeing our nation's Capitol, studying with university professors, and meeting students from all over the USA. While I never aspired to public office, JSA expanded my feeling of possibility, readied me for college, and gave me communication skills that have benefitted me and my community for a lifetime. JSA is worthy of the highest support from donors and neighborhoods who all need a citizenry who can think critically and communicate with accuracy, precision, and confidence.

My name is Cherylyn Aulerio and I am an alumni student of JSA. I attended the program at Stanford University about 5 years ago and I can honestly say I learned a lot from my peers, my RA's (mentors), and my professors. With that, I figured what I wanted to be when I grew up and I am still following through with what I planned 5 years ago. JSA not only teaches students about political issues, it teaches students about what can be done regarding those issues. I learned so much from my experiences as an islander and I believe this program would help many more.

The experience in JSA (then CJS) and the learning from the summer school courses were of significant help in me in my later career. Aside from government and politics, which turned out not to be the major part of my career, the training in how to work with people, how to communicate both formally and informally, and how to think critically were important. I went on to a successful career in science and the related businesses, and JSA experience was clearly important in preparing me for that and helping me to enter universities important to that career. An excellent investment of time and modest money, and it was fun to boot.

JSA served my high school with a top-tier debate program, facilitating regional and national tournaments. JSA provided civic and leadership opportunities while preparing myself and classmates for collegiate-level debate participation. Additional, the foundation runs a number of college-prep summer school programs -- one of which I attended.

I credit JSA for the educational and work opportunities that I have been lucky to receive since.

I got interested in the debate club in High School.. It was called JSA.. It was so much fun debating and preparing to debate and engaging in healthy discourse.. Something that would be much appreciated in todays political environment. This organization set the seed for one of my biggest passions in life, It was part of the reason I ran for public office, it is a reason I engage in Civic Activity and give back.. The Summer Program in Georgetown cemented the passion. There is truth to the fact that JSA creates solid leaders in our country and for that I am personally and generally thankful to this organization for making us all better.

I am an alumnus of both the summer program at the University of Texas at Austin and the summer program at Georgetown University. Moreover, my senior year of high school, I became engaged with the year-round organization attending conferences across my home state of Texas, engaging in serious debates on public policy and cultural advancement, and building an incredible network of rising leaders that has served me throughout college and my professional career. JSA introduced me to my passion for civic engagement. It was the first program I attended in which there existed a vast community of civically engaged and politically aware young people. My peers in the program inspired me to refine my understanding of our government, international relations, and national history. My peers made me a better citizen and a better human being.

Now, in my mid-twenties, reflecting back on my JSA experience, I cannot sufficiently convey my gratitude. I would not be who I am today without my experience in the organization. The program enhanced and broadened my academic capability (increasing 10 points in my ACT score after the program). Moreover, had it not been for my experience with JSA (specifically the Georgetown program), I would not have applied, been admitted, and graduated college from Georgetown University (Class of 2014). Moreover, it gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities I never would have imagined possible. My growth in JSA, equipped me with the gumption to seek out opportunities that led to internships in municipal, federal, and international government while in undergrad. I lived abroad for half a year studying culture. Post college, I moved from Texas to New York City to immerse myself in the regulatory environment of the U.S. financial system, and now I am applying to law school. I encourage anyone who is even mildly interested to apply and pursue. You will increase your understanding of yourself tenfold. Your life (and its trajectory) will change substantially.

JSA is a vital organization that fosters youth leadership, civic engagement, and critical thinking. I participated in high school as a member, chapter president, conference attendee, mini conference organizer, regional leader, and Stanford summer school graduate. Those experiences helped me gain confidence, speaking skills, independence, empathy, and a deep interest in politics. Those skills have never left me, and I give JSA credit for instilling and preserving those traits I cherish so much today, 25+ years after high school. I participated in JSA through all four years of high school and went to three summer schools. JSA was central to my understanding of civics and how to be a good citizen, providing an experience I couldn't get in the classrooms of my high school (which is a great school -- JSA just adds something extra that you can't get in a regular classroom!). It helped me meet people with different backgrounds and different points of view, which ultimately changed my outlook on the world. I'm grateful that JSA was a big part of my formative years. I would not be the person I am today without it. I have a much broader perspective and remain eager to hear other sides so I can learn from my peers. I also learned that in a civil society, every citizen is indeed your peer! When I look at the way our country is operating politically today, I wish more students had the opportunities that JSA provides. That's why I continue to donate every year. Thank you JSA!

As a freshman in high school, I had very little idea of who I was. There are so many factors preventing confidence and a sense of self-worth at that age. We are largely ignorant of the world, we haven't had any real opportunities to test our limits, our cultural exposure is limited to our home towns, and we are almost never asked for our opinion in a way that matters. JSA changed all of that.

Joining JSA exposed me to new people and new ideas. It challenged me not just to learn about the important issues in our world, but to decide where I stand on those issues and defend that stance. JSA gave me both perspective and a platform to voice that perspective. What's more, as a student-run organization, JSA requires its members to not just sit back and learn, but stand up and lead. The confidence, sense of self-worth and general communication and interpersonal skills I gained at JSA were the most formative factor in me becoming who I am today.

I was in JSA for four years and also attended the JSA summer school. After that, I went to school in Washington DC to study politics and environmental policy, also earning a masters in public policy. Now, I develop renewable energy systems. I chalk much of that up to JSA and the mentors and friends I found there. I sincerely hope every student that wants it is given that same gift. I am confident that JSA won't fail them.

I had no idea what JSA was, and until the moment I first joined, I had no idea how much I was missing out on. For starters, the JSA community is full of warm and encouraging people. I remember being anxious to speak in front of the classroom, and even though I stuttered throughout the whole speech, I received a lot of helpful feedback at the end! When I attended my first convention, I had an even more mind-blowing experience (if that's even possible). It amazed me how dedicated and in love everyone was with this organization - it was at that moment I knew that I wanted to get to know everyone in and outside of my chapter, and experience each convention and conference alongside them!

The Junior Statesmen Foundation provides resources and guidance to the greatest high school program in the nation. The Junior Statesmen of America is by far the most fulfilling and rewarding high school experiences that any student could wish for. By facilitating a forum for discussion about political issues in a nonpartisan environment, JSA is able to effectively supply students with the tools they need to become productive members of society. The community that JSA creates is one that is both intellectual and accepting and inspires students to analyze and discuss real-world problems and explore solutions to those problems among a diverse group of students. There's a reason that JSA has been around for so long and has impacted so many lives - the experience that JSA provides to students interested in politics and civil engagement is unprecedented. The life-long friendships, professional experiences, and heightened appreciation for our democratic process you find in JSA all not only prepare you to "be the people", but also for life. As a first-generation college student, the research skills, argumentative abilities, and knowledge of current events that I gained from JSA conferences and summer school sessions proved very useful when adjusting to the rigor of college life. I came into the Junior State of America my junior year as a very apthetic, heedless, and cynical student. I was cynical towards the government in general; I held the common notion that politcians are full of lies and the average American's voice does not matter. Right after my first convention, however, I knew that I was terribly wrong. I grew aware of the many different ways anyone can engage in the political process and how our voices truly do matter. I am now leaving the Junior State of America as I am graduating this year, but I am taking the values, passion, and knowledge it has embedded within me. Thank you JSA.

The Junior State is an organization unlike any other that gives high school kids opportunities and responsibilities that many will not see until they reach mid-level positions, and certainly not until long after college. The Junior State challenges students to grow personally and professionally, while building practical skills and robust character.

The Junior State of America has allowed me to develop as a thinker, a speaker, a leader and a friend. As the largest student run organization in the country, JSA does not teach leadership, but rather provides a tangible leadership experience. With this incredible autonomy, we learn from our own mistakes and the guidance of our peers. While allowing students to find their voice and express their opinions, JSA teaches us to critique ideas, not the people who generate them. Unlike most teenage groups, we exemplify the integral American value of “innocent until proven guilty”. Each student is welcomed into a community of open minds and hearts where everyone is valued and respected. By instilling this confidence in its members, JSA prepares its members to “be the people” who actively engage in our society.

JSA has fundamentally changed my life and my high school career. JSA took me out of my shell and no I seek out opportunities to lead and speak in front of hundreds of people. I've been able to solidify my beliefs and participate in debates allowing me to strengthen my arguments. JSA has even given me the opportunity to go inside the White House, Supreme Court courtroom, and the floors of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. I've not only met many of our nation's leaders but also countless of wonderful people from around the world that I'm now lucky enough to call my friends. All in all JSA is everything a high schooler could ask for in an extracurricular.

Junior State of America is an absolutely life changing organization with endless opportunities. It's not just about debates or thought talks, it's conventions and conferences plus the summer school opportunity that makes JSA unique and amazing. I had the best time at JSA summerschool at Stanford University studying A.P Government and Politics and it was a absolutely amazing experience. Also, Fall State, Winter Congress, and Spring State are extremely fun where you can talk with a variety of people on certain topics and make everlasting friendships! JSA keeps America's democracy running. Democracy only works with an educated electorate, and JSA allows the voters of tomorrow the chance to educate themselves on important political topics. It teaches high schoolers how to express their views, and share what they care about. JSA is an important resource to lower income schools that may not have the resources for a great civic education program on their own, allowing for motivated students to get scholarships to conventions and summer schools. Every dollar that goes to JSA is a dollar that is invested in the future of America.

JSF and JSA have helped me grow tremendously over the last three years in ways unimaginable. I first joined wishing to learn more about the issues that persist in our country and to hear possible solutions to these issues. Since then, however, I have not only learned how to think analytically, communicate effectively, and respect the opinions of others, but I've also been able to grow as a leader and as a person. The opportunities that this organization provides to high school students around the country to learn more about leadership and how to get actively involved with government are incredible. Of all the clubs in High School, JSA is the one organization that I have truly connected with. The welcoming atmosphere, the professional attitude of its members, and the extreme passion of everyone involved truly drew me in. Even with the professional attitude, the simple style of debating, was a great outlet for my passion for public speaking. JSA is an amazing club that I am honestly grateful to be a part of. Joining my freshman year, I was so surprised at how inviting everyone was and the style of debate that JSA offered. Contrary to my belief, JSA was not some type of formal congressional style debate free of all emotion and opinion. JSA's motto to spread democracy has ushered a more casual style of debate that motivates even the non-frequent speaker to say a few opinionated words on the cause that he or she feels strongly about. This openness is honestly what kept me in JSA last year, and is why I would love to stay active over my next 3 years at VHHS!

JSA changed my life.

I was introduced to the organization in the middle of my freshman year, and was immediately hooked on the in-depth serious discussion students like me were having. At the time, I was a remarkably shy, quiet, and reserved person, keeping largely to myself. I was terrified of conversation, much less public speaking. Yet somehow, I found myself getting up to the podium and speaking my mind. It became more natural every time. The confidence I had speaking in front of a group, somehow, translated into my day-to-day conversations, and I became more social, friendlier, and happier. JSA gave me courage, and for that, I cannot thank it enough.

JSA is a terrific program, because it gives teenager a voice. It's an open discussion where teenagers who otherwise might have lived their whole lives ignoring their civic rights can not only talk about politics, but be active in them.

Too many teens feel pessimistic or hopeless from the current state of the country, and don't realize that it is our chance to make a change. JSA gives opportunities to, among other things, create and attend conferences that span state boundaries, activism activities across the Midwest, and summer programs for talented high schoolers.

On a more personal level, I've been involved in JSA for the past year, and it's quickly become an important part of my life. I'm ecstatic to find a group of people who not only are interested in talking about politics and current events, but also are PASSIONATE about it! Like many reviewers before me have said, JSA has truly changed my life for the better, and that is definitely not an exaggeration. As a high school student looking for an outlet to discuss the many issues of our world and also a student tired of being told what to do all the time, this organization encompassed everything I was looking for, and more. The Junior State of America has opportunities for every kind of person out there- new friendships, leadership opportunities with a range of responsibilities, and intelligent discussion and debate. But most of all, it provides an outlet for students to be self-sufficient, something that many kids are lacking when they go off to college or the real world. Students run almost every aspect of JSA, from weekly chapter meetings to major conventions, and even nationwide activism projects.
I joined JSA my freshman year and am in my third year, and I couldn't imagine my high school career without it. I know I've changed as a person for the better because of JSA, and I've surprised myself with what I could accomplish because of what JSA has pushed me to do. I'm so thankful that I have this year and the next left to continue being active and will cherish it, because I know that this experience is something that I'll never be able to have again.
This entire review page is a testament to how much of an impact JSA has on students now and later in life, and some day I hope that the majority of students in the United States get to experience JSA and have their life changed, just as many of us have.

JSA is a program that truly has something for everyone. Some people find inner confidence and become comfortable speaking in front of rooms full of friends, acquaintances, and even strangers. Some people find a passion for politics that will follow them through college and into their careers. Some people find friendships that give them much needed stability as they navigate high school. JSA has given me a little bit of all of this - I know when I go to meetings and conventions that I will learn a little bit more about myself. I know that I will gain experience in speaking and debating while still having fun. This organization allows for young students to participate in politics and spread their opinion. The current youth are the future of this great nation and if they don't learn how to voice their opinion as well as have an opinion this nation will fall to pieces as well as have no active enrollment in the government. JSA is a wonderful organization that gives kids a chance everywhere to really learn about the American democracy. What sets JSA apart is it's comittment to the students it is helping. All conventions are student run, and all debates are done by students for students. JSA is shaping the next generation of diplomats and negotiators by letting them have a voice. Most kids feel that they are unimportant poitically, but JSA breaks that mold. Personally, JSA has assured me that it is ok to have opinions, and beyond that, taught me how to articulate them potitely and professionally. JSA offers invaluable skills to teens: confidence and the strength to hold their own in a true political discussion. Cabinet members get a chance to experience real responsibility, and leadership positions are available at the most local level in high school chapters all around America. It's good. Honestly my one downfall was summer school. The kids talked the talk more than walked the walk. They really had no backbone. A lot of my great friends who I love weren't educated well enough on a situation to actually make a judgement on their own two feet without their views being distorted by previous news articles or stereotypical society opinions. They went wherever the wind went. If the majority thought one way then they thought that way too. This is all because they weren't educated enough and given the opportunity to think on their own two feet without society's distortion. Figure out a way to prevent that and I will give JSA 5 stars and recommend JSA to my kids one day.
This is pretty harsh, but its honest. I say these things in the most sincere way and only to make the organization better.

I joined JSA my sophomore year confused about my stances on politics and current issues. However, JSA changed me for the better and I learned invaluable lessons about compromising on various issues and shaping my political beliefs. Through chapter discussions and debates conducted on the chapter level about numerous issues such as the Syrian Civil War and the NSA mass spying scandal, I reinforced my beliefs and understood the views of others more thoroughly. Furthermore, statewide conventions and conferences allowed me to connect to a much more larger range of people with views ranging from the political left to the political right. I was also able to participate in unforgettable debates and discussions encountering views that I would have never heard of in my chapter. At the end of my final and third year in JSA, I became the president of my chapter at Central High School and one of the Keystone Directors of the Mid-Atlantic State because I wanted to become more involved in educating and debating with others about issues plaguing the world. Ultimately, I will never forget my experience in JSA and working with my chapter to encourage others to become civically involved and understand any national or global issues.

I started a JSA chapter at my school during my sophomore year, and quickly came to realize what a great decision that was. JSA fosters a productive political discussion within your own school community, but also permits students to engage and participate in discussions with students from all over, causing students to not only offer their own opinion, but learn from the perspectives of others. Through debates, simulations, and discussions, I have found that almost every student that I have watched come into contact with JSA has become more politically active, more knowledgeable, and more confident with improved public speaking skills. The political activism that JSA promotes is unique and really allows students to be more active in the world around them. By allowing students to openly debate and discuss important topics in the news, JSA helps prepare students for their future and teaches them life skills that they will use forever. Junior State of America is perhaps the largest student-run organization in the country, and has changed the perspectives of students everywhere, including myself, on topics like domestic affairs and international relations. I entered my Freshman year, new to the whole debate process, and found myself intimidated by all the talented and skillful debaters around me. Very soon, I learned I had nothing to be scared of, as I was welcomed warmly to the organization that I would consider home in the years to come. JSA has greatly impacted me, in that, I have learned so much on so many different issues talking, debating, and exchanging opinions. JSA has taught me how to diplomatically convey what I believe in, while actually taking the time to understand an opposition's point of view. Moreover, I have made so many close relationships and made valuable connections in my time at JSA. JSA provides students with insights and experiences that transcend government and politics. When joining JSA, students are welcomed into a warm, ambitious community that helps all of its individuals by supporting their aspirations. The organization is a proponent of the fundamental responsibilities each and every single one of us have as citizens - responsibilities which our generation is increasingly apathetic about. As a group, we advocate activism, leadership, volunteerism, and believe that above all if we "be the people" we will successfully make a difference. The club actively shapes today's students into tomorrow's leaders. Voltaire expressed it best when he stated that "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to my death your right to say it". JSA provides for its participants a venue in which strong opinions are appreciated, in which voicing your opinion and being ready to defend it in a dialectic fashion is encouraged. JSA is a journey; a journey where the people you meet, the cultures you're exposed to, and the simple life lessons you learn genuinely change your life.

Joining JSA was one of the best decisions I made. My experience with JSA began with my involvement in their summer program at Princeton University. I initially attended the program in order to experience for myself whether living on my own on a college campus would be right for me. As time went on I had come to realize that this whole experience had become so much more than what I initially attended the program for. I had befriended so many amazing people and I learned so much from just spending 3 weeks with many intelligent and motivated individuals. That same summer I was contacted by a member of the NES cabinet and suggested to start a JSA chapter at my school and the rest is history. I had an amazing time serving my schools chapter this past year as the founding co-president and I can't wait to serve my chapter as the president next year. I loved attending all of the year round conventions and meeting new people. I was recommended to apply for NES cabinet and I'm glad to say that I will be working as an expansion agent this upcoming school year. I joined JSA my freshman year after hearing a then-junior enthusastically wave his hands to emphasize words like "debate" and "conventions" and "fun." The first meeting was a little scary, sitting in the back of a jam-packed lecture hall, and hardly knowing a single person as I listened to the club president introduce herself and JSA. My first convention was Fall State 2011, and it was one of the best weekends of my life. I made so many new friends, spoke main in two debates, subsequent in a few more, and voted on every resolution. That was all that I needed to encourage me to speak more, debate more, share my opinions and here those of others more. More, more, more, JSA has opened my mind and given me great skills in speaking and debating, and I can't even begin to describe how many of those skills have helped me in other clubs, in school, and even at home. Next year will be my last, but I'm not sad, just grateful that I allowed JSA to take up so much of my high school career, honestly I don't know where I'd be if that exuberant junior hadn't come into my class that day, if I hadn't plucked up the courage to share my side, JSA is all I could've hoped it to be, and I know that from our parents' generation to our childrens' and grandchildrens', JSA is going to enrich so many more lives through speaking skills and friendship forming, the network that JSA has provided me is priceless.

I quickly made many friends that I soon discovered had the same interests as me. Seeing their involvement in JSA showed me that I could do the same. JSA is a great hands-on way for high schoolers to be involved with American politics and issues present today. We have a voice and together we fight apathy. JSA is an organization like no other; it isn't your average debate or speech club. Through JSA, I have significantly improved my public speaking and debate skills, as well as deepening my interest in politics.

I started JSA when I was a sophomore in high school. The all-star kid at my school, the person I strives to be, did JSA so I followed in his footsteps. I knew I was interested in politics but I didn't truly find myself loving them and getting into debate like I am now until I joined JSA. The students their were brilliant, the staff kind, and every convention was an adventure. But I didn't get a real feel of JSA until I got into elected position s. Students don't always learn responsibility in high school. Sure students have to learn to manage time and do homeowkr, but JSA functions as a business. The students actually have jobs and run the entire organization. No one is there to tell you to do something or to remind you about deadlines. Between meetings and write-ups the students do it all. Now with JSA under my built, I know how to lead a true, real-life project.

The Junior Statesmen Foundation provides young people with the knowledge and opportunity that we need most in this society. The Junior State of America, by providing civic education and opportunities to speak up, helps students blossom to their full potential. It helps nervous students learn to speak up, and it helps loud students craft their message, helping them convey their message exactly and easily.

When I went to events around our school district and town encouraging people to get involved with JSA, they'd ask my why it was worth their time. What's the point? Public speaking skills are the single most important skills you will ever learn. I would tell them that no matter what they want to do in life, what career they want to pursue, you will always have to convey your ideas in a coherent and logical manner. JSA isn't just about debate. It's about learning how to present yourself and your ideas in a logical and attractive manner.

One of the testaments to how well JSA works can be found right here on these reviews. These reviewers are all JSA students. They all love their organization, and they all wrote clear and moving reviews. No other foundation could produce such amazing and talented students as JSA. Anyone considering getting involved with JSA will be glad they did.

Thank you for your time. I'm excited that you're interested.

When I first became involved with the Junior State, I was truly a different individual. I was unable to speak in front of a class without my face turning beet red. More importantly, I didn't know how much I didn't know about politics. After a few conventions and two years involvement, I am doing things I never would have seen happening. I spent 3 weeks in Georgetown with the program and got a letter from POTUS Barry O yesterday. Who does that? Nobody who isn't in JSA. I am an active participate in the program and hope to continue in the future and get as many of my classmates to do the same.

JSA has been a life-changer! Although primarily marketed as an organization for debate, public speaking, and politics, it is so much more than that. Activism, community building, student government - it's all there. I have built up so many skills and made so many friends just by getting involved. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in making a difference in the world.

I can't stress enough how important JSA has been to my growth as an individual. I have been actively involved in the organization since freshman year, and never could I have imagined the impact it would have on me. I've become a better speaker, a better leader, and a much more confident and politically active member of society. JSA has molded me into a eloquent speaker, passionate citizen and confident stateswoman. The knowledge and skills I have gained in my three years within this organization are perhaps the most important assets one could ever gain through a high school club. But any debate club could teach you that. What sets JSA apart is the passionate individuals working day in and day out for this student-run organization. I have made several life-long friendships with people I know I will see on Capitol Hill, television, or winning Noble Prizes. Thanks to JSA, an only child from Chino Hills now has hundreds of brothers and sisters hailing from different cultures around the world, that will change the world.

JSA and the Junior Statesmen Foundation has opened up so many opportunities to me as a high school student. JSA's mission and activities explore all aspects of good citizenship: political awareness, social awareness, and communication skills. It brings together thousands of intelligent and passionate high school students from schools across the nation. The conventions, both one-day and overnight, have a certain, unique atmosphere of competition mixed with a genuine feeling of unity over common interests. I would encourage most anyone to participate in JSA for these reasons.

I have been in JSA for over two years now and I have absolutely loved every minute of it. This past summer I was given the opportunity to attend the JSA Summer School at Georgetown University and it was an experience that truly changed my life. I also was able to attend the JSA Institute on NJ Leadership and Politics for the past two summers. Before I joined JSA I was absolutely horrified at the thought of public speaking, but now I am able to speak in front of over one hundred people explaining what I believe and why I believe in it. Now, I serve as the Renaissance Council Chapter President and the New Jersey Region Conference Coordinator. I can not thank JSA enough for all of the wonderful opportunities it has given to me, I look forward to the next two years with this amazing organization.

I attended JSA's Georgetown Summer School this summer and I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions of my life. From the moment I walked on campus I had people introducing themselves to me and going out of their way to make sure that i was having a good time. In the three weeks to follow, I made friends with just under 200 of the most inspirational, passionate, politically active, and friendly students I've ever met. I'm confident that these kids will go on to do amazing things, and I truly believe that JSA will help guide them there. JSA has helped me reach out of my comfort zone in order to think critically about the issues plaguing our country on both a domestic and international level - issues that adults often think my generation is "too young to handle". I've learned so much and I'm so excited to continue working with JSA, and cannot say enough good things about my experience at Georgetown this summer.

JSA provides a transforming experience, and is probably the most unique high school organization I have ever come across. To say that Junior State of America has been the highlight of my high school career would be an understatement. JSA has furthered my interests in politics and government, and has fueled my passion for community service. The Junior State of America is an organization that empowers students to voice their opinions and nurtures them to become leaders. One of the many reasons why I love JSA is because it provides everyone with the ability to freely express themselves without the fear of being judged or stigmatized by others for their beliefs. JSA teaches everyone to respect one another, despite their adverse beliefs, in a non-judgmental environment. This plays a vital role in empowering students to feel comfortable and encouraged to express their opinions. I am the President of the West Orange Chapter of the Junior state, and have been a member for two and a half years. This organization has given me the opportunity to take trips to our nations capitol, take college classes on government, and educate members of my high school about how our government works. In short, JSA provides the invaluable civics education that is so sorely lacking in our schools.

Junior States of America is highly organized and functional. It's difficult to believe that this whole thing is organized by none other but a group of teenagers. The people involved are amazing, they will do big things in the world. The organization helps many high school students to become more politically active and informed. JSA is amazing!

As a high school student, Junior State and the Junior Statesmen Foundation had a profound impact on my life. I learned how to get up in a front of a group of people and speak about topics of importance to me. I learned how to lead others. And I developed lifelong friendships. As an adult, I continue to volunteer in support of Junior State and the JSF because they are continuing to make this experience available to high school students and encouraging their engagement in civic life. I know of no more important civic mission.

The Junior Statesmen of America has made a profound impact on my life. I attended the Princeton and Georgetown Summer Schools, and I am an active member of the year-round organization. I can safely say that the friends I made in JSA will be my friends for the rest of my life. The Junior State is not only a club that seeks to foster citizenship, but a first step in a long and prosperous political career. Our alumni include former Defense Secretary Leon Penetta, former Attorney General Ed Messe and former Press Secretary Mike McCurry. JSA is a truly fantastic organization !

This past summer, I went to JSA Summer School at Georgetown. I chose the program because it looked interesting, and I thought that I might get to explore my interest in politics a little bit more. Needless to say, when I arrived, I was floored. Never before had I seen a group of students as well-informed and passionate about politics. Debates about hot button issues broke out during meal times, but no matter how much we disagreed, we all were grateful to one another for being able to share our views in a civilized manner. After the three week program ended, my interest in politics had not only increased ten-fold, but I had made dozens of new friends (on both ends of the political spectrum, I might add). My experience was so wonderful that I've decided to start my own JSA chapter at my high school so that I can share this experience with my fellow students.

While the Junior State of America (JSA for short) is considered a debate club, the opportunities for members far exceed what you would expect from its simple description. The debates are about intriguing current events, and spark interest in the minds of many: It is impossible to leave a JSA convention without having learned something new about current events. Besides the debates, JSA offers members opportunities to be politically and socially active. Many students write articles for the Huffington Post, write to their local officials, and attend activism workshops at conventions to help others do the same. My high school has an annual event "Fight Apathy", which is dedicated to helping others speak their minds about the issues at hand. In terms of community service, JSA encourages chapters to serve the community as a group, making a more lasting effect. JSA also has multiple leadership opportunities available, for those who wish to be part of the team that keeps moving JSA forward. I am glad to say that I am a member of the Junior State of America, and thus far, it has most definitely proved to be a both fun and beneficial experience.

One of my biggest high school regrets is not joining JSA my freshmen year. As a sophomore and junior, though, I have left every convention astounded by the quality of political and ideological discourse achieved. Following the first email I saw about an upcoming convention, JSA has gradually taken over my life. The first thing I do upon opening my laptop is check my JSA email. I go on Facebook to see if there have been any Cabinet notifications. The week is gauged by the weekly club meeting and the debates I write for it, and the year is marked by the three major overnight conventions. I've invested much of my time, energy, and enthusiasm into JSA, and I always get back more than I gave.

There are clubs, there are debate clubs, there are politics, there are political clubs, and then, there's the Junior State of America.
When I joined JSA in sophomore year, I was shy. Uncertain. Lacking confidence. Without a voice. I had thoughts, I had opinions, but I didn't have the words to express my mind. I had interests, but I needed to make them fuller, to turn them into true passions. I could talk, but I couldn't speak.
And then, through a chance chat with a friend, I became acquainted with JSA, and decided to check it out the following week.
In life, there comes times when you reach a turning point, a new beginning filled with new opportunities, new insight, new people, new adventures. JSA was my turning point, marking the end of the old, quiet me, and ushering in the age of the confident, intelligent me, the 2.0 version with more wit, charm, ideas, and most importantly, the ability to turn those ideas and opinions into words that people will listen to.
It's more than the welcoming atmosphere, the comfort of choosing your side and topic, the luxury of rambling on and on about your thoughts on a particular matter-JSA is about the people. By the people, for the people-a gathering place for minds that understand one another and operate on the same intellectual level.
There's so many more things I could say, so many more examples I could give and stories I could tell about the Junior State of America, but there's not nearly enough time, space, or attention span to list them all. Instead, I will sum JSA up in three words: Join right now.

The people in JSA, both students and adults, are stubborn and rigid. The adults in their unwillingness to change and the students in their utter adherence to adult rules. JSA is not nearly as diverse as other similar organizations like Youth and Government. The experiences you get from JSA are almost exclusively from just speeches and debating. There is not that big of a political process aspect as it is advertised. Shy people who still have an interest in politics are blown back, not able to participate like they can in JSA.

JSA is the largest student-run organization in the country. It provides a safe and educational environment for people to speak their minds. You can go to jsa.org to see exactly what JSA is, but let me tell you what's not on their website. As an extremely active member of JSA I can tell you that there is statesmanship in every nook and cranny of this organization. Students learn, not only about politics and government, but how to be a statesman. Statesmanship is the most important characteristic in any politician, or any human being.

In addition to all of the internal politics (as we are a model government and have elections every year) JSA comes with some sort of indescribable friendship. We can call each other communists and fascists in the midst of heated debates, but at the end of the day, we are all friends. Life-long friends. I'm not sure what JSA puts in their water, but the comradery among these students is a bond so strong not even completely opposite views of politics, religion, and culture could break. It is truly the best thing anyone with any sort of interest in government, politics, or just plain meeting new people could do for their high school careers.

I started volunteering with the Junior State of America (JSA) in the fall of 2011, and I cannot think of anything I have ever done that has had such an impact on my life. Being a part of JSA has empowered me to strive to reach the full potential I have as a fully participating member of my community. After my first year in JSA, I started moving up in the ranks, becoming a Chapter Internal Affairs Agent, a position wherein I disseminated information from the elected officials to the chapter presidents. This helped me develop communication and interpersonal skills, abilities that are invaluable for success in the world of today. After a year well spent as a vector for information from the leaders of the organization to the other members, I was elected to be a leader in my own right, becoming the administrator of a large area. As administrator, I worked with a cabinet that I chose to put on a conference for other volunteers, helping me to develop the necessary leadership skills and improving my communication abilities, a necessity with working with others. Overall, the Junior State of America has shaped my life in a way that no other organization has. I am fortunate that as a freshman I encountered the Junior State of America, a student run organization dedicated to creating civically minded American youth. Reflecting on the last three years, I realize that my involvement was a valuable journey. I pushed myself beyond my comfort zone by engaging in debate, public speaking in front of crowds bordering on one thousand students, and running for elected office. I learned how to manage my own staff, plan regional events, and assert myself onto both the national and international stage. I did this by enforcing activism initiatives, as well as participating in programs like JSA's diplomat cultural emersion program in Beijing, China where I took Mandarin and Chinese history classes. I learned to combat the negative side of politics and to overcome challenges. JSA taught me the power of an individual, helped me find my voice as a female leader, and ignited a passion within me to continue to involve myself in civic engagement and activism.

The Junior Statesmen of America has been the single, greatest part of my high school experience. In addition to teaching me that my opinion matters far beyond the classroom, it has reinforced the idea that my opinion will shape the future. JSA has taught me many things outside of our mission statement, to make students more politically active. It has blessed me with life-long friends and life lessons that could not be learned anywhere but in this great, student-run organization. Through my time with this organization, I have encountered many other young adults who have had experiences similar to mine. As I'm sure the other reviews of JSA on this page could show, each student gets different things out of their time with the organization. A common theme, however, seems to be that they felt more open to the world; JSA was their key to experiencing their life, whether in educational or political or social capacities, more fully. Every student should be lucky enough to experience JSA, be it at a one day, or overnight convention, or at a summer program. I am truly blessed to be associated with and dedicate my time to this organization, and I could not imagine my life without it.

JSA, to put things simply, is an organization that provides real world experience in leadership, networking, and work ethic to high school students. The organization relies heavily on student leadership and this is one aspect in specific that causes it to shine out above mediocrity. Whenever I attend a JSA function I know that I will not have to worry about the ability of the staff members, 95% of them being students, to handle all the logistics, from booking a hotel to setting up interesting debate topics. JSA also served as an educational experience for me. I have become so much more politically aware and feel like I have become a more useful member of my community since joining the organization. The Constitution addresses the public as "We the People" and I always took this phrase for granted. JSA taught me what it really meant to Be the People and changed my life for the better.

In every school throughout the country you have really special students whose knowledge is astounding and abilities unbelievable. They're often held back, only exposed to their small community. JSA takes these students, brings them together, and gives them the tools to grow. The students walk away, changed for the rest of their lives. Friends made in one day last a lifetime, as they're exposed to other students who want to change the world NOW. JSA takes students and unleashes their ability. Walking out of Conventions or Summer Programs, their entire world view has been altered. Some go on to start companies, taking on risky entrepreneurial ventures while still in high school, others decide to run for political office at the age 18. JSA is a the most wonderful organization I've encountered, it takes kids with a spark and teaches them how to turn it into a fire.

I got involved with the Junior State of America program in my freshman year of high school, and the programs funded and administered by this foundation came to define my high school career. Its programs are extremely effective in engaging high school students in thoughtful discussion about current issues and engaging them in civics. This country has a dire need for greater civic education among youth, and the JSFs dedication to strengthening and providing civic education is certainly a noble goal. This non-profit differs from others involving high school students in that, even at the highest levels of national policy planning, students are not only involved but take roles of leadership. The Governors of each Junior State effectively have full-time jobs with the foundation, and one of them even serves as a voting member of the Board of Trustees. My own personal experience as a Convention Coordinator had me designing and compiling 50-page agendas and interfacing with hotel staff (who took all the students completely seriously). Few organizations tailored to students afford as extensive leadership opportunities as those sponsored by the Junior Statesmen Foundation, and if you would like to benefit youth education in civics nationwide, there is no better cause to support.

JSA or Junior State of America's mission is to strengthen American democracy by educating and preparing high school students for life-long involvement and responsible leadership in a democratic society. The AMAZING part about JSA that separate's it from any other organization is that it is STUDENT RUN! From the conventions to the chapter conferences, we the students, learn about STATESMANSHIP as they engage in political discourse. We cultivate democratic leadership skills, challenge one another to think critically, advocate our own opinions, develop respect for opposing views and learn to rise above self-interest to promote the public good. I attended my first Summer School Program at Stanford through JSA. It was the most challenging experience I have ever partaken in. I feel more that prepared for college! Having been to over 9 conventions I can say JSA conventions are a time of pure bliss filled intriguing debates, inspiring speakers and friendships that last a lifetime! It's something you don't want to miss. I would recommend JSA to any and EVERY high school student to get involved. It is through JSA I found my voice and now my opinion is being heard making a difference in the world!

As a teenage pacific islander, it was quite difficult to gauge how difficult university classes would be. In attending Stanford and Princeton via JSA summer school, my eyes were truly opened to the hard work still ahead as I graduated high school. In addition, I noticed that I was more prepared for college then even many of my U.S. mainland cohorts during my first year of college because of JSA. I learned how to strive for excellence from the many professors, advisors, and counselors at JSA. Basically, a big time two thumbs up for this program and I would be a volunteer as I return to the islands of Palau.
