's mission is to improve and strengthen the health and well-being of our diverse northern virginia community through culturally-competent and language-appropriate hiv/aids services and prevention education. Programs: Novasalud's goal is to provide hiv/aids prevention services in northern virginia to those at highest risk for hiv. In 2014, we provided over 2,740 hiv antibody rapid tests to target populations in northern virginia which included men who have sex with men (msm), heterosexuals at high-risk for hiv, substance abuse individuals, and transgender individuals. * of the total numbers of clients who requested an hiv test, 20 client tested positive. Per clients' requests, most were successfully referred to inova juniper for medical care. * novasalud distributed over 110,000 free condoms to the target populations with weekly distributions throughout northern virginia. * novasalud staff and volunteers provided voice/voces group level intervention to a total of 69 latino substance abusers. * the staff and volunteers provided comprehensive information on hiv/aids ad provided leadership on reducing stigma and discrimination to over 3,000 general latino population. * staff and volunteers provided outreach activities for a comprehensive condoms distribution campaign to over 5,000 latinos.
as part our commitment to provide hiv/std prevention services to the marginalized transgender community, novasalud hosted a transgender fashion show in august to increase awareness and understanding of the stigma and discrimination faced by the transgender community. * gabriela garcia, novasalud transgender health educator, successfully provided group-level t-sista hiv-prevention intervention sessions to a total of 24 transgender latinas at high risk for hiv. * gabriela garcia also conducted 5 transgender support groups to 56 transgender latinas. Support group topics covered a range of vocational skills training with a theme of hiv and std prevention education. *
men who have sex with men (msm) continue to bear an unequal of the burden of the hiv infections in northern virginia and across the nation. As part of novasalud's dedication to fight hiv among those target populations with the highest infection rates, we provided over 530 hiv antibody rapid tests in this year to this msm target population. * novasalud's rise program intervention works to empower those msm who have faced a lifetime of discrimination to shed those burdens and find the confidence they need to lead a healthy and productive life. The rise facilitator provided five rise programs throughout the year, reaching 62 latinos men who have sex with men.
