I am truly grateful and happy to be part of Mercy In Action. What I appreciate most is how they genuinely care for both the patients and the people serving them. You can really see the compassion in the way they provide maternal and newborn care. What makes their work even more meaningful is that the practices and trainings we receive are evidence-based and well-researched. They don’t simply teach us what to do—they make sure that what we practice in the clinic is supported by evidence and truly beneficial and safe for our mothers and babies. Being part of Mercy In Action has helped me grow not only as a midwife, but also as a person who serves with greater compassion, knowledge, and purpose. I love TeachAids, for both their work and the people that make up the organization! I was first involved in TeachAids for several years while I was an undergraduate at Stanford starting in 2017. I did video production as a volunteer/intern, helping TeachAids with creating early versions of its concussion education curriculum. Piya, the founder and CEO, is an amazing human and has a wonderful positive spirit that definitely establishes the positive yet productive tone at TeachAids. She, along with many others I worked with during my time then, made it a true joy to be a part of the work. A few months back, after nearly 10 years since I first worked with TeachAids, Piya and I got in touch again. I'm a product designer nowadays, and a co-founder of my own design agency, and I was happy to volunteer our design services to create custom TeachAids-branded materials for them. I've always been more than happy to help TeachAids, because I truly believe they are doing genuine work.

We have partnered with Mothers without Borders over the last four years and we have been impressed by the passion and love that they put into their work. Their ability to stretch your donation to maximize their reachin helping the most vulnerable children in Zambia is impressive. Their strategy and programs are making a significant impact on the lives of children and their families, delivering sustainable change that will last for generations. Their programs range from sustaining life, providing quality education, teaching life skills and values, helping launch young entrepreneurs with microloans and women's savings programs. I have been to Zambia multiple times and have witnessed their work firsthand. We are proud to be able to partner with those who lovingly create an alternative path for women and children who were destined to a life of extreme poverty.

This nonprofit has a lot of heart and dedicated staff that really makes a difference in the lives of children in Africa that so many overlook.

Finding AIDS RESOURCE Health Clinic has been transformative for my healthcare experience. After years of feeling uncomfortable or having to educate my providers about basic LGBTQ issues, I finally found a place where I can just be myself. From the intake forms that actually reflect my reality (with inclusive options for gender identity and chosen name) to gender-neutral bathrooms, every detail shows that this clinic was designed for our community. It's the small things that make such a huge difference – being called by my correct name and pronouns without having to correct anyone and knowing my provider understands the specific health concerns I face. The medical care itself is outstanding. My doctor is knowledgeable about hormone therapy, PrEP, and other LGBTQ-specific healthcare needs, and approaches everything with sensitivity and expertise. I never have to explain or justify who I am – we can just focus on keeping me healthy.

I did have one good experience with ALRP. But that person no longer works there. Overall a bad experience. I contacted them about landlord issue and sent them copy of lease and house rules. JR said they felt that I wasn't telling them the truth about issue. It was a simple issue. Then she said she would look into contacting landlord directly. And that I would need to sign release. I said that I was agreeable to that. Then I got a blank email from her. I replied that there was nothing in the email. No answer back from her. A week later I complained to some people there and she replied. She said she had offered to contact landlord directly, but I didn't answer. Then she was going to send the release forms me to sign. I said no because I didn't trust her. I asked director there to assign me to someone else. He forwarded my message to client services director. Client Services Director told me I shouldn't complain that some of their staff was arrogant or that I hated one or two of them. So I am never going to request services from ALRP again. I don't know what their agenda is. I told director that ALRP staff is too important to help me.<br><br>I took my issue to the Housing Right Committee. I gave them the same information. They gave me clear information on how to handle the landlords enforcing of illegal unwritten rule.

In this case, GMHC & Affiliates ended 2023 with negative assets of $(663,792). Meaning, the organization owed that much more to outside parties as compared to the total value of its assets. This is an improvement from the prior year in which it reported a negative net fund balance of $(1,590,614) at 12/31/2022. <br> <br>Management’s Plans to Alleviate Financial Woes <br> <br>According to the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) consolidated audit of December 31, 2023 (Note 10, Due to Related Party): <br> <br>“In December 2022, the Organization received an advance from an officer in the amount of $201,572…There was no written agreement between the officer and the Organization. The balance was repaid in full in January 2023.” The audit did not disclose the officer who loaned the funds, nor did the charity file a Schedule L with its tax Form 990 detailing the transaction. Either way, a loan from an officer is a stopgap to address short-term liquidity issues, not a solution for moving the organization permanently out of the red. <br> <br>In its fiscal 2023 consolidated audit, published on September 26, 2024, the charity’s management communicated its plans for improving its financial outlook. According to audit note 15, “Financial Condition:” <br> <br>“At December 31, 2023 and 2022, the Organization ended the year with a net deficit as a result of consecutive decreases in its changes in net assets from operations in 2023 and 2022. Management has considered whether there is substantial doubt about the Organization’s ability to continue as a going concern due to these factors and evaluated its available cash balance over the next 12 months from the date the consolidated financial statements are available to be issued.” <br> <br>“To alleviate the concerns noted above, management has budgeted for fiscal year 2024 to alleviate losses by applying for additional grants, subleasing additional floors, expanding the 340(b) program and focusing on reducing expenses.” <br> <br>“The Organization continues to focus on expanding its government fund programs, through strategically applying for grants aligned with the Organization’s Strategic, portfolio of services, as well as its resources. The organization ended 2023 with $14,241,437 in revenue from government contracts. The Organization budgeted $21,046,051 in revenue from government contracts for 2024, for an increase of $6,804,614.” <br> <br>“The Organization continues to offset its office-related occupancy expenses, by subleasing a portion of its leased space. The rent commencement for the 2nd Floor sublease began on January 1, 2024. To date, the Organization has subleased approximately two and a half floors out of six. The Organization is currently in negotiations to sublease the 7th floor and hopes to have the new tenant in place by January 1, 2024. The Organization will continue to occupy the remaining two and a half floors.” <br> <br>“In fiscal year 2024 the 340(b) Pharmacy program revenue has increased by roughly 40% as compared to fiscal year 2023. In the fourth quarter of 2024, GMHC will begin billing for the medical services related to the 340(b) Pharmacy. GMHC’s projected medical expenses for the program in FY2024 are expected to be $1,897,908. These expenses are for medical visits and lab fees. Going forward, the Organization will bill the patient’s health insurance for those services. The Organization and the providers are currently credentialed with insurance providers.” <br> <br>Gay Men’s Health Crisis Won’t Answer Questions About The Current State of Its Finances <br> <br>CharityWatch contacted GMHC on May 7th, 2025 via email with questions about the current state of the charity’s finances. We heard back from the organization’s Director of Community Relations, Krishna Stone, who told us our inquiry was forwarded to “one of the senior managers in the Finance Department.” When we didn’t hear back we followed up on May 28th, 2025. Nearly 7 weeks after our original inquiry, the charity has still not provided answers to our questions as of the publication of this article (June 24th, 2025). <br> <br>Questions We Submitted to Gay Men’s Health Crisis <br> <br>1) Has the organization been successful in subleasing additional office space (such as the 7th floor that was currently still in negotiations at the time the audit was published)? <br> <br>Can you provide a figure for how much the organization earned from subleasing revenue in fiscal 2024? If an exact figure has not yet been finalized a ballpark number will do. <br> <br>2) Audit note 15 outlines management’s plans to expand its government funding. Was it successful in doing so in fiscal 2024? Did it meet its target of $21 million? <br> <br>Given government cutbacks under the new Administration, has the organization experienced any cuts in its government funding and if so, how much? Does it anticipate more going forward? Can you provide some additional detail on this topic, e.g., a percentage of increase or decrease in government funding in 2024 relative to 2023; and any information you have about additional losses or gains in government funding that have occurred or that you anticipate will occur in 2025? <br> <br>3) When do you anticipate the organization’s fiscal 2024 audit and 990 becoming available to the public? <br> <br>4) Do you have any additional comment on the organization’s current financial condition? <br> <br>5) The yellow book audit cited a material weakness in the organization’s internal controls over financial reporting processes as it relates to 2022 government funding. Beware: This organization takes your blood and sells it on the open market for massive profits. They give blood donors a token gift card--which speaks volumes in that they see this as a financial TRANSACTION and not a way to support the community. They treat donors terribly with run-down facilities, long waits, and rude, moody, unprofessional staff. They pretend the blood stays local and is used to save lives. But ask them--they can't guarantee it. Do not work or donate with this organization. They are dinosaurs.

Once I found that DAP was no longer for just HIV patients I thought I would try them out since my normal PCP has become “concierge “. I can honestly say I was not impressed. I gave them several tries even changing caregivers. They don’t listen to the patient. I’m done with them

Caring Communities for AIDS is an outstanding nonprofit organization. They meticulously manage state, federal, and community dollars to provide high quality services to their patients. Every staff member at CCFA cares deeply for their patients and provides all services with a passion for the broader community.

My experience with Matthew 25 AIDS Services has been deeply disappointing. As someone living with HIV, I expected an organization committed to inclusivity, equity, and meaningful support for people living with HIV (PLHIV). However, I found that the organization lacks representation of PLHIV in its leadership, staff, or board, which undermines its ability to serve the community authentically.<br><br>Additionally, I encountered discriminatory practices and a lack diversity. Repeated attempts to address these issues with the leadership were ignored, and the organization’s environment did not feel collaborative or supportive.<br><br>Matthew 25 receives substantial funding and is the only HIV services organization in the area, yet it fails to create a safe and empowering space for PLHIV. I strongly urge the organization to reevaluate its policies, prioritize lived experience in its hiring practices, and address issues of white supremacy, serophobia, and lack of inclusivity to better serve the community it claims to support.

I am currently a volunteer at the Los Angeles LGBT Center. I am amazed that almost all of the reviews on this charity here are dated 2009, which was over 15 years ago! Many of these reviews are negative and no longer accurate. For example, the Center was certainly NOT a "huge billion-dollar venture" in 2013, as one reviewer asserted, nor is it today! (Its last-reported FYE revenues as of 2023 were $162,444,453 - nowhere close to one billion dollars!) I also know what the situation was for gays and lesbians and the Center in the 1970s, and I continue to be proud of the L.A. LGBT Center now. It is a well-operated and effective charity doing a herculean task in a country that continues to assault LGBT civil rights. If you can afford to, I highly recommend donating money to the L.A. LGBT Center.

I have been a donor to Young Heroes since 2013, and have visited the country several times, and have seen first hand the critical need for support for the orphans, and the high level of support that the Young Heroes staff provides, in many ways: life support grants, education support, teen coaching, vocational training, microfinancing and coaching for women to start small businesses, and much more. The young boy that I sponsored, who had lost his whole family to AIDS, finished school with Young Heroes' support, and now has a stable job and family, and we still stay in touch.

When reading reviews of FFT, please note that there are no current positive reviews to date reflecting this agency today, versus the incredible work done from its inception to over a decade or so ago. This once worthy and fabulous, grassroots HIV/AIDS Food bank has since, sadly lost its way. Although a worthy Pilot Project opened its doors to varying clients living with other life-threatening diagnosis, post COVID, to secure alternative funding options, mis-management of funds & staff by an untethered & unaccountable, long-term ExecutiveDirector (including, a successful legal maneuver to alter a long-term donor's endowment wishes in order to pay for increased staff, wages and capital improvements instead of exclusive direct Client Services as specified by the deceased) has sullied the viability and good name of a once-stellar, heart-centered AIDS organization. Altering the name & mission statement of the once- beloved Food for Thought, Sonoma County AIDS Food Bank to its now generic Food for Thought Food Bank, was the final blow to this nonprofit, who has all but erased it's former history & commitment to serving PWAs in Sonoma County--yet, still banks on its previous good name & practices for fundraising purposes to those unaware of it's history versus it's practices of today. Sadly, clients are barely allowed in the building, but instead, are almost exclusively relegated to a call-in, drive-through pick-up or limited delivery model for sad, wilted produce & mostly processed foods. Staff turnover is unusually high and the food bank's ED's unethical & questionable practices remain unaddressed & blindly trusted (sanctioned?) by a performative, inattentive Board. In conclusion, donate FOOD, NOT CASH to this agency. TRUST, on all fronts, appears "broken" and sadly, clients living with HIV are no longer prioritized and have been stripped of the once important on-site, client-based socialization & participation, shopping model that made this agency stand out, with heart, from day one.

I'm volunteer at the Richmond Ermet Aid Foundation for over 9 years.<br>I staying with this organization for so long because I see result of their work.<br> I see how hard REAF working to support several very important causes like Providing aid for HIV services, hunger programs and support for homeless and disenfranchised youth and seniors, and how selfish and determined Board of Directors, volunteers, donors and sponsors are.<br>I'd like to nominate www.REAF.org for Great Nonprofit Award.<br>

As the President of a non-profit organization that provides affordable, long-term, permanent housing for individuals with disabilities, I have been affiliated with PWA Holiday Charities for over 8+ years. At least 2-3 times a year, this organization graciously provides much needed financial assistance to ALL of our residents, all of whom receive monthly income that place them far below the NATIONAL POVERTY level.
