Causes: Environment, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection
Mission: Nyc audubon society is a grass roots community that works for the protection of wild birds and their habitats in the five buroughs of new york city, improving the quality of life for all new yorkers.
Programs: Conservationduring this year conservation efforts included two major programs:1. Project safe flight - making nyc safer for migratory birds. In addition to our regular monitoring for window strike victims in manhattan, we are also collecting incidental reports on bird mortality through our innovative web-based reporting schema called d-bird. We are partnering with colleagues to describe different qualities of outdoor artificial lighting and correlate those with mortality events. We continue working with partners to identify 'bird friendly' glass characteristics and ways to standardize these ratings for companies seeking to achieve the bird-friendly pilot credit for leed. Our green roof continues. We are monitoring the jacob javits green roof in manhattan and the broadway stages wildflower roof in brooklyn for biodiversity (arthropods, birds, mammals). We are leading an initiative to create a green roof working group in nyc. 2. Our waterbird program focused on the health of the ny harbor using waterbirds as bio indicators of estuary health. This program includes our harbor herons nesting and foraging surveys; beach-nesting shorebird monitoring and public outreach; and migratory shorebird surveys. In jamaica bay, we conducted beach clean-ups and monitored horseshoe crabs and migratory shorebirds and led educational outreach to local schools. We started a shorebird monitoring program, attaching high-tech nanotags to semipalmated sandpipers. Tag frequencies are detected by an array of stationary data loggers (vhr towers).
