Causes: Education, Student Services
Mission: To provide a voice for and reflect the views of the youth of new mexico. To promote the growth of the student councils within the state by providing leadership training and the exchange of ideas. To act as a central agency for the collection and distribution of materials relating to student council work.
Programs: National student council conference: nmasc organized and sponsored student and adult delegates to attend the national student council conference held in orlando, fl. Students and advisors representing the state organization and eight middle-level and high schools attended. Leadership training and camaraderie building was the focus of the event. New mexico was selected as the host site for the 2015 nasc conference. The nm/nasc delegation increased about 70% from 2013.
summer leadership workshop (life as a leader): student council state officers for the 2014-15 school year and their executive advisors prepared a successful leadership workshop. Highlights of the workshop were hands-on participation in nmasc's state project - the elderly- with students representing communities state-wide making hundreds of lap blankets that were distributed in the fall to elder care facilities throught the state. The workshop included a training with national consultant the "original" mike smith. Student leaders and their advisors returned home with goals established in preparation for the 2014-2015 school year. This program showed an increase in attendance over 2013.
state leadership conference: this annual conference was filled with student and adult-led training workshops; national motivational speakers; an achievement showcase; practicing democracy via student elections; building camaraderie with schools in geographical regions as well as from around the state; peer to peer learining; and awards and recognition. Special adult recognitions went to the middle level and high school advisors of the year; administrator of the year; and nmasc lifetime achievement to the executive director, emeritus. The host school, in a small community in northern nm, welcomed 1,000 student leaders, advisors & guests state-wide to the 2014 state conference. There was a growth in attendance over 2013.
fall district conferences (fall district conference week): student leaders and their school advisors attended "a gladiator's quest" - district conferences for leadership training and camaraderie throughout the state with national motivational storytell bob tryanski; peer-to-peer leadership instruction; and for execution of our state service project in each district. The nasc lead conference (energize your leadership): albuquerque was selected 3 years ago as the site of the nasc's fall leadership experience and development (lead)conference. This weekend meeting/training emphasizes communication; leadership skills; and leadership roles on the local, state, and regional levels - for student council, nhs and njhs. Nmasc state officers served as emcees, welcoming leaders from massachusetts to san diego.
