Mission: Net links a diverse array of ensembles and practitioners to one another and the performing arts field, encouraging collaborations and knowledge building and dissemination. Net is committed to the advancement of the ensemble form and strives to bring about change in the world beyond ourselves through the transformative power of collaborative theater. We support bold artistic and civic experiments and aim to heighten the impact and excellence of ensemble theater.
Programs: Professional development programs: these programs build the fields capacity, develop and disseminate peer-based knowledge sharing, and sustain ensemble theaters and practitioners. The net travel & exchange network (net/ten) provides grants to members to support artist-to-artist exchanges of performances, training, and organizational practices; the program builds the fields administrative and artistic capacities, and connects ensembles across the country and abroad. Awarded in partnership with the playwright's center, the annual ensemble/playwright collaboration grant supports collaboration between an ensemble and a playwright. Net builds and disseminates a body of knowledge to promote rigorous investigation of ensemble practice and nurture the field; online resources include a shareback library of peer-based tips and tools, field case studies, and discussion forums.
field convenings:net fulfills its function as a network by organizing and convening the field through various national and regional events for networking, peer-based learning, and discussion of pressing field issues. In fy17, this included past forward: 2017 net national gathering & symposium in seattle in june 2017, a national event bringing together members, artists, co-creators, practitioners, educators, scholars, students, activists, organizers, funders, policy-makers, and others from around the country with an interest in collaborative creation across disciplines and sectors.
field building programs: net's membership program nurtures the ensemble field, provides services and support to members, and maintains a national roster of ensemble-focused peers for networking and field learning. Net strengthens relationships with and among our members through local organizing and local events such as the #netdate program for members to self-initiate one-on-one meet ups. Through our advocacy and cultural policy efforts, net organizes and promotes ensemble practice and ensemble theater-making as a distinct element of the theater, amplifying its collective voice for local and national impact. Net serves as the voice of ensemble theaters in cultural policy discussions, and at convenings of artists, practitioners, educators, funders, service organizations, and agencies throughout the u. S.
