Mission: The national new play network is the country's alliance of non-profit theatres that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays.
Programs: National showcase of new plays is a rotating festival that showcases works submitted by members from across the country in staged reading for the nnpn's membership. The showcase creates an invaluable opportunity for production-ready new plays to be viwed by artistic directors, literary managers, literary agents, publishers, and independent producers from around the country. 60 plays have been showcased, of which more than 80% have received full productions both within and outside of the network, many of them through rolling world premieres. Nnpn also hosts an annual conference, which also serves as a meeting of the board of directors.
rolling world premieres: nnpn's flagship initiative, the national new play network rolling world premieres (rwp), supports three or more member theaters that choose to mount the same new play within a 12-month period. In this program, a playwright develops a new work with at least three different creative teams for at least three different communities of patrons, ensuring the resulting play is of the highest possible quality. Nnpn authorizes both funded rwps, involving a minimum of two core members and at least one other member theater, as well as unfunded rwps, made up of any combination of three or more members. Funded projects receive up to $21,000 divided among the partners. Nnpn has supported 49 new plays in more than 200 productions to date.
residency programs: the executive committee of nnpn's board of directors selects three to five residences to fund annually from proposals by playwrights and core member theaters which include projects the organization and writer would undertake, additional possible employment sources within the theater and the community, and housing and travel details. Each playwright in residence receives a stipend and a designated travel fund, which enables them to learn from and engage with nnpn members throughout the year. Nnpn has created a similarly styled producer in residence program, intended to seed the field with producers who understand the creation of new work from diverse perspectives. And as of 2015 nnpn is launching a pilot program for directors in conjunction with the kennedy center, the o'neill theatre center, and the society of directors and choreographers.
