Programs: Cienfuegos, cuba - a team of nineteen volunteer medical professionals, a mission coordinator and a pbs producer, traveled to cuba to perform the countrys first ever post-mastectomy breast reconstruction surgery, in addition to providing surgical care for children with severe, debilitating deformities and traumatic injuries such as burn contractures and orthodontia care including creating custom molded obturators for children with cleft palates, medically ineligible for surgery. The trip included a joint symposia. 40 patients were treated and 100 medical professionals received training. Additionally, pbs filmed the trip for documentary to air late 2017. The mission included a 3 day site visit to re-establish relationships, meet with government and hospital officials and determine the supply and equipment needs of the hospital and a separate 8 day trip to screen patients, perform surgical procedures and conduct a joint symposia.
cabo san lucas, mexico - a team of six volunteer medical professionals and a mission coordinator traveled to mexico to perform post-mastectomy breast reconstruction surgery and train one of the two plastic surgeons serving the large region to perform the procedures self-sufficiently and consult on complex congenital deformity cases which require multiple surgical procedures over several years. 20 patients were treated. The mission included a 2 day site visit to meet with government and hospital officials and determine the supply and equipment needs of the hospital and a separate 5 day trip to screen patients and perform surgical procedures.
havana, cuba - in partnership with stanford university and another agency, produced the first ever international plastic surgery conference, training nearly 1,000 cuban surgeons. Two plastic surgeons, members of the plasticos foundation board of directors, partnered in creating curriculum and served as lecturers at the historic event which spanned 4 days and included a two day site visit to meet with partner agencies and government officials.
