Causes: Centers to Support the Independence of Specific Populations, Civil Rights, Disabilities, Disabled Persons Rights, Human Services

Mission: Latan assists individuals with disabilities to achieve enhanced quality of life and greater independence through access to assistive technology (at). Latan serves louisiana residents of all ages with all types of disabilities, including wounded warriors, and with limitations due to aging who need at and daily living aids. At includes items that individuals use to assist them in daily activities, such as canes, wheelchairs, communication devices, hearing aids, keyboard alternatives, learning software and vision aids.

Programs: Device demonstration program latan demonstrates assistive technology to individuals with disabilities and with age-related limitations so that they can try out the devices and make informed choices before purchasing. This year, latan demonstrated devices to 706 individuals in 130 demonstrations.

public awareness latan provides assistive technology (at) awareness and information to the public, regarding the benefits of at, through its newsletters, website, state and private agency newsletters and websites, presentations and exhibits, information and assistance, publications, public media and other vehicles. This year 1,634,912 people received assistive technology public awareness information in these ways:- latan print newsletters 5,926 individuals - e-newsletters and e-blasts 103,039 individuals- latan website 2,127 unique individuals- latan information and assistance 189 individuals served with equipment and service information- exhibits of at information and equipment and presentations on at topics 2,249 individuals- newspapers, psas, and other print publications 1,497,416 audience- facebook imprints - 23,966 individuals

financial loan program the assistive technology financial loan program provides reduced-interest, extended-term, fixed-rate loans to individuals with disabilities and with age-related limitations for the purchase of assistive technology devices. This year latan provided loans to 5 individuals, totaling $81,270.

device loan program latan provides loans of assistive technology devices and equipment for the purpose of individuals trying various devices to see what works best for them in school, at work, at home and in the community. This allows the opportunity for individuals to try out devices in their own environments before purchase, while their device is being repaired, or while waiting for one that they have ordered. This year, latan loaned 19 devices. Device reutilization program latan provides opportunities for individuals to acquire previously owned assistive technology devices, such as wheelchairs, walkers, canes, computers, communication devices, bath chairs, and many others, to use in their daily activities for education, employment and community living. In september 2005, latan began a new emergency equipment distribution program in response to hurricanes katrina and rita and continues on a smaller scale. This year, in all reutilization programs, latan provided 13 pieces of recycled equipment for a savings of $11,480. Training during this year, latan provided 11 assistive technology training events for 717 people. Technical assistance technical assistance related to assistive technology was provided to:- governors advisory council on disability affairs- department of health and hospitals, office of citizens with developmental disabilities and office of aging and adult services- department of homeland security and local, state, and federal emergency management personnel- work pay$ coalition- louisiana workforce commission- louisiana department of educationcollaboration latan worked with above listed entities and with disability organizations, such as families helping families, independent living centers and councils on aging to promote the benefits of assistive technology and to increase access to assistive technology.
