Mission: Lookingglass theatre company is a national leader in the creation and presentation of innovative, cutting-edge theatrical work, and shares its theatrical development techniques with chicago's diverse community through the extensive outreach of its education and community programming. Programs: Mainstage productions: our signature approach to developing playsinvolves long-term dedication to the development process,presenting work in a theatre with a configurable stage and seatingthat can change depending on the needs of the production. Todate, we have produced 68 world premieres and have received 90jefferson awards and citations. Three mainstage productions werepresented, plus an offsite production, in the past year. New playdevelopment: lookingglass propels its unique artistic vision withthe creation of new work through glassworks. Lookingglass primarycommitment is to produce new theatrical works. These bold, newworks are created through the glassworks program. Within thisprogram potential scripts receive considerable development throughintensive workshops and readings. The significant amount of timeand resources invested in glassworks has an enduring impact on thesustainability of the company and on our status as a premierinstitution for the development of original work. Lookingglassreceived the regional theatre tony award in 2011.
education: in addition to other programs, lookingglass' studioclass and summer camp programs teach a story-centric theatre artseducation that emphasizes collaboration, invention andtransformation, while preparing students to perform with skill andconfidence. With programs for students from ages 18 months to 18years, sequential classes and workshops provide an engagingprogression for students to develop theatre skills whileexperiencing and creating stories from a variety of genres andsources. Scholarship support is provided for talented low-incomestudents.
community programs: through in-school residency programs andstudent matinees, lookingglass provides underserved students withunique and engaging arts education opportunities that increaseconfidence and academic motivation. Lookingglass teaching artistscollaborate with teachers and principals to establish goals,curricula and evaluation methods for each program, referencingillinois state goals and standards and the chicago guide forteaching and learning in the arts. Residencies are held in abroad range of schools, serving students of many ethnicities,special needs, and socio-economic backgrounds. In addition todesigning programs that fit limited budgets, lookingglass aidsschools in locating outside sources of financial support andsubsidizes a portion of each program offered. Student matineesprovide the opportunity for chicago-area students to attendlookingglass performances with a discounted or fully subsidizedticket. Lookingglass' community programs directly servicedapproximately 4,247 chicago-area students, teachers, at-riskpopulations and people with disabilities. Lookingglass served3,289 students through 25 residences at 25 chicago-areaschools and community centers; 68% of these programs (17) servedlow-income, traditionally underserved students. The studentmatinee program served 918 students from 17 schools; 86% ofthese tickets (795) were provided to low-income, traditionallyunderserved students.
