Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal-Related, Animals, Dogs

Mission: The mission of Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico is to rescue, rehabilitate and place for adoption small companion dogs. Our goal is to place these dogs in loving, forever homes and to do this through a rigorous screening and adoption process. We operate strictly through volunteerism, counting on the generosity of others and of ourselves to further our mission.

Results: As a network of caring foster homes where our dogs are temporarily homed and socialized, and not kenneled, we screen applicants so that our dogs will be accepted by the adopting family. We collaborate with other state-wide rescues to save New Mexico dogs that come from many sources: animal shelters, owner surrenders, and actual abusive situations. In 2016 we rescued over 500 dogs . Since 2001, we have saved thousands of New Mexico shelter dogs.

Target demographics: save New Mexico Shelter Dogs

Direct beneficiaries per year: more than 500 rescued dogs - by successfully adopting them into loving forever homes.

Geographic areas served: Albuqerque, New Mexico

Programs: rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of small companion dogs.

My husband and I adopted two dogs almost a year ago and not to brag but they are the best dogs ever! We met with fosters Tim and Nicky to potentially adopt one dog but another one of their fosters adopted my husband, so we adopted her as well. And we can't imagine our home without them in it. We now have a wonderful Corgi named Norman and a little Italian Greyhound, Maggie Mae. They made the adoption process so comfortable and easy. I'd recommend Lap Dog Rescue to anyone looking for a pet. The fosters really go above and beyond for the animals in their care. It truly is a great organization.

Cooper T. is a Lap Dog Rescue Alumnus. I highly recommend this organization to anyone seeking a great small life buddy. Lap Dog Rescue has amazing, caring fosters who really get to know prospective adopters. Most importantly they take great care of the dogs in their charge both before and after the adoption. We have been blessed with our little guy and hope the same for anyone looking for a companion.

Gidget joined our family a few years ago, courtesy of Lap Dog Rescue. When we saw her at the adoption event, she was freshly shaved from recent surgery, and she stood on her hind legs as if to say 'Pick me! Pick me!' At the time her name was Jade, due to her mystic eye color. Gidget has been such a blessing to us. Many thanks, Linda and Art

Our family is so excited to have our new addition, Figgy. Figgy was rescued from a shelter in southern NM. It is our understanding that she was on the kill list. She is loving, calm and so sweet. The perfect addition to our family. My husband is in love! Thank you Lap Dog Rescue.

I unfortunately was in a position that I had to find my dog Olive and new loving home. I reached out to Lap Dog Rescue of NM. They were very quick to assist and found her a foster, Tim and Nicki who were the most loving and nice people. Olive was adopted out to a new family. I couldn’t be more thankful for this organization and my fosters.

This little guy was a stray and was saved by LDR. He was so afraid of men when we first got him. Now he’s my huband’s BFF. Without the diligent work of LDR we wouldn’t have the opportunity to have this precious gift in our lives.

This sweet boo is Evie. My husband and I adopted her in the summer of 2016 after we had lost one of our beloved pups. Evie, who was known as Lilly at the time, had recently lost her person and with nobody to take her, she was left at a vet where she was found by a LDRNM partner.
Evie was a senior when we adopted her, and we soon learned a lot about her. She was mute, and she didn’t do great with the stairs/jumping due to an old injury. I’d have to carry her up and down the stairs, which I never minded. Though she wasn’t a highly adventurous dog, she loved going down to the water when we’d go to the lake, and enjoyed being out for walks with her “brothers” (we had a stroller for Evie). Evie’s favorite place in our home was her dog bed; eventually I’d bring her up in the bed to sleep at night because that’s where she likes to be the most. My favorite thing about her was her joyous “buck” she would do when I would come home; she would excitedly be run around the house to greet me. It was the cutest.
We lost Evie on May 21 this year. As much as we would have loved more time with her, it comes with the territory of adopting a senior. I am glad she had a life full of love in her last years, and I am so grateful that Lap Dog Rescue brought such a special girl into our lives.

Dusty was adopted from Lapdog Rescue in 2014, and this little guy has changed my life. I am so grateful that Lapdog saved his mom and litter mates and gave me a chance to meet him.

Because of Lap Dog Rescue, I found one of my best friends. We rescued each other. Adopted as Pepe, I renamed him Maxwell. He passed away this summer after 15 years by my side. I am forever grateful to LDR. RIP Max.

Brian and Lap Dog Rescue are the best! We adopted our sweet Honeybelle in July 2011. When Brian brought her over, it was almost hard for him to leave her which told me they are really invested in the dogs they take in. He checked in on us a couple times after she officially became part of our family. She is such a mama's girl and I will be forever grateful that Brian thought she was a "keeper" when he saw her at the shelter!!

I got my pug from lap dog. I have had her 5 years now.she was 6 when I got her and in her third home. She was deaf, and no one knew it! She's so smart , she fooled them all. She is a wonderful pooch, and I am grateful to them for trusting me with her. I support them and have done facebook fund raisers for them. They do great work!

I've adopted two of my three from this organization and they are first rate! Our pups, Gunner and Gus (and Sadie from AZ) are amazing and if we ever decide to add to our family again they will be our first look. The president Brian who gave us Gunner and the foster parents, Nikki and Tim, we got Gus from are simply amazing too.

I adopted this little guy from Lap Dog Rescue..... named him “Mulligan” because we figured he was getting a “do over” in life. ⛳️ Everyone that comes over wants to take him home. Once he warms up to you he just loves sitting on your lap and listening to any store you care to tell him.

We had THE BEST experience with Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico, specifically our pups foster, Jan Krell. We had just lost our sweet pup of 16 years, to cancer. Fast forward 2 months - and we found the perfect match for us! Miles (formerly Rocky). He has brought so much fun, love and joy to our lives, as well as our other rescue Jazz, not to mention our granddaughter. Thank you LDNM!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Lapdog Rescue rescued my family on January 16, 2013. We had to lay to rest our beloved dog, Oxford on November 4, 2012 due to cancer. We were heartbroken. A good friend referred me to Brian with LapDog Rescue. Brian brought over this mutt named Jasper who barked and barked at me. You see Brian was his person at the time. After being rescued from a very high kill shelter so of course Jasper was nervous. That night I was certain that Jasper would want to sleep in his kennel but wasn’t having it. He slept on our bed, on our sons bed, on the sofa, and well he settled right in. We believe he is 12 now and continues to bless our family. Then we were delighted with Fifi 2 years later, sadly she had a stroke 2 years ago. We also have Bonnie and she rules the roost.. all 5lbs of her. We have many friends who have also adopted from LapDog. I am so impressed with LapDog Rescue. They truly go out of their way to help and aid so many dogs in a state that is inundated with homeless and sick pets.
