Mission: The 2000 U.S. Census documents the poverty rate for Koreans living in the Chicago metro area at 30.4%, higher than the poverty rate for any other ethnic group, and higher than the city average, which is 19.6%. An article by the Chicago Tribune analyzing the 2000 Census data stated that along with high rates of poverty, 47% of Koreans residing in the Chicago metro area are linguistically isolated, possessing poor English skills, which severely limits their participation in economic, social and political institutions. In addition, The 2000 Census reports that 35% of the Korean American population in the Chicago metro area are 19 years of age and younger, and as immigration begins to slow this percentage is estimated to increase. KRCC's mission is to address community needs through programs in education, social service, organizing/advocacy and culture.
