Mission: To stimulate and sustain the visual arts in chicago. It does so by challenging and supporting artists, connecting artists to a broader public, and creating a community of people who are interested in the visual arts. The art center's flagship programs provide opportunities for anyone to see, make, learn about and discuss art.
Programs: School: hyde park art center offers on-site and in-school education programs for all ages, allowing any student or family to engage in life-long learning. A typical day of on-site learning at hyde park art center sees children painting, teenagers taking photographs, and curious adults exchanging ideas with teaching artists and visiting arts professionals. The end result is a vibrant community filled with youth and adult artists, dedicated teaching artists, and passionate arts enthusiasts. Students at hyde park art center can expect to have fun working with real artists while learning and growing as people. Teaching artists do more than just address skills, they also get students to think beyond the act of making art. During 2017, the hyde park art center ran 171 courses and camps with 1439 students (inclusive of 302 campers) during 4 sessions and summer camps.
exhibitions: exhibitions showcase new work by primarily chicago-based artists. During 2017, more than 93 artists exhibited in 19 exhibitions and approximately 101 talks, workshops and openings.
outreach programs: the hyde park art center reaches over 4,000 young people annually with visual art workshops and classes in chicago public schools, parks, and community centers in the neighborhoods surrounding it on chicago's south side. These thriving programs are training teachers, reinforcing curriculum within schools, as well as teaching positive life skills, job skills, creative problem-solving, and high quality visual art techniques. In 2017, 19 schools participated in 40 programs with 907 students.
artist residency program - brings artists from around the world to live and work in chicago. Program seeks to support artists in the process of creativity, research and innovation by providing studio space, networking support and time to think and explorepublic programs: the art center ensures people have the opportunity to try their hands at artmaking in a fun and friendly environment through a variety of ongoing events that aim to demystify contemporary art and encourage the public to know and support the artists in their community.
