Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals
Mission: The allen county spca will promote the prevention of cruelty to animals by providing a safe haven for animals, an effective and comprehensive adoption program, education and outreach programs for the community and deep and broad membership and volunteer programs.
Programs: We are a limited intake shelter. Our animals come to the organization through community members who can no longer take care of their pets as owner surrenders. The largest number of homeless animals, however, arrives through our transfer program, which supports hundreds of animals from municipal and private shelters throughout northeast indiana and ohio. The animals in the transfer program would otherwise be euthanized. Some of the additional services we provide to enrich the lives of pets and their owners include a weekly pet food pantry, which provides food for local families who may be facing hardships that make it difficult to keep those pets in their homes. Our organization effectively supports the overall welfare of animals in our care through the multi-tiered levels of services. Animal care division this division is the largest of our programs. All services concerned with animal care are attributable to this area including animal admission, adoptions, adoption counseling, lost pet program, housing, nutrition, kennel sanitation, security, building maintenance, equipment maintenance, supplies for all aspects of animal care, motor vehicle maintenance and upkeep, grounds and special projects. In 2017, we provided 46,320 sheltering nights for 2,466 animals and 2,343 adoptions. Animal health division this division is crucial to satisfying the overall mission of the organization. With stray animals brought in by concerned citizens and those tied to our fence, there are many unknowns about preexisting conditions and past wellness on an animal including shot records etc. Our program provides all needs for the animal including boosters, heartworm preventative, testing for specialized and deadly diseases and spay and neutering before adoption to promote responsible pet ownership while aiding in the decrease of overpopulation from unwanted pregnancies in our community. This area also includes medical examinations, laboratory diagnostic, grooming, therapy, extoparasite and internal parasite control, personnel training, liason with veterinary professionals and research. It includes special projects and unique medical challenges as necessary. We provided a comprehensive wellness program that provided spay/neutering for 1,215 animals. Animal health services are only provided to animals belonging to the acspca. Humane services division this area is utilized to promote the humane treatment of animals, educate the community about our organization's programs and services as well as asking for corporations, foundations and individuals to financially support our mission. The specific services in this area include our volunteer program, our community outreach program, our membership program, marketing, public relations, resource development and special projects. We had 186 volunteers provide 12,845 hours of service to our organization with duties ranging from socialization of our animals including walks and social stimulation as well as staffing community outreach events, aiding in monthly mailings of our communication pieces, fostering animals with special needs, and general up keep of the shelter. Our volunteers are also vital to the continuation and facilitation of our weekly pet food pantry which provides more than 200 families a week with cat food, dog food and pet supplies. The food provided is from our collections from special events, local food drives and dozens of individuals who give daily to our shelter. Our membership continues to grow and is currently at 2,915 members strong who receive continued communication through our newsletter and participation in annual meetings including voting rights.
