Mission: Hopewest is a community-based, "safety net organization providing a variety of programs all focused on profoundly changing the community's experience with aging, illness and grief-one family at a time.
Programs: Hospice is focused on care for patients and their loved ones wherever the patient may reside: home, nursing home, assisted living residence. Serving more than 1750 patients in 2017, more than 600 received acute care at our hospice care center. Due to the generosity of our donors, no one was turned away due to inability to pay or complex social needs. Caregivers include hospice nurses and physicians specializing in hospice care and volunteer support at a rate of more than 3 times that required by medicare. A $12 million capital campaign for expansion of senior services began in 2017, reflected in the $3. 8 million revenue over expenses. Income from operations was $416,000. The most significant salary increase in 2017 was due to the number of physicians hired and nursing shortage salary requirements.
grief education and support for adults (482 in 2017) is provided through groups, individual counseling and other activities such as memorial services several times a year. In addition, our counselors respond to work places or schools with crises that arise. Hopewest kids is the grief program for children that provides support in every school in our area, equine therapy, 3 camps, art therapy and more to more than 600 children a year. Our palliative care program has three programs consisting of living with cancer, transitions and journeys for patients who need our expertise but do not qualify for hospice insurance benefits. These programs provided care to 405 patients with the support of volunteers, physicians, nurses, social workers and chaplains.
retail outlets-businesses providing our communities with a gathering place where they get to know us and find support while coping with serious illness and grief. Heirlooms for hospice, three upscale resale shops, feature treasures donated by the community. Families of those hopewest has served find comfort knowing the treasures they donate help support hopewest, and also bring joy to the neighbor who purchases them. Many volunteers in the stores find grief support through their work. Spoons bistro and bakery, (full-service restaurant), and the artful cup (coffee house and gift shop), located on our hospice campus, serve patients and families receiving care in the hospice care center. They are places known in the community as wholesome gathering spots for receiving information and support.
volunteer services - people with a passion for helping others make our work possible. 1,184 volunteers gave more than 81,000 hours of time in 2017, adding a value of 39 full time equivalents (ftes). Gifts of time are as unique as those who contribute. Volunteers change our world by holding the hands of patients in need, providing art and music therapy to patients, supporting kids coping with grief, providing spiritual care, welcoming visitors, beautifying our gardens, creating a one-of-a-kind shopping experience at heirlooms for hospice, making our fundraising events special, baking cakes for patients' special celebrations and so much more. Future services: the organization spent 2017 readying for an expansion into pace (program of all-inclusive care of the elderly), and a unique program for seniors called the center for living your best (the club). In order to achieve this expansion, a capital campaign was launched and money was borrowed to finance the building space.
