Mission: Hazel incorporated's primary exempt purpose is to educate the general public about the art of dance through the provision of meaningful educational experiences, mainly teaching and promoting dance in new york city public schools and other venues.
Programs: January 7, 8 -- association of performing arts presenters conference, hilton, ny; educational workshop & performances, ailey citigroup theaterfebruary 16 -- is 52's thrill team, a select group of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, perform the company's swing dance. The program also includes a showing of student choreography and a performance by the limon dance company. 9:45am-11:00am at is 52, northern manhattan. February 27-march 5 madeline and daniel are in residence at the rochester city ballet, setting encore. March 3 the ballet hosted the in studio open rehearsal, an opportunity to view the work of gwirtzmans and hear from him and the dancers and artistic staff in an informal and up close studio setting! March 8-june -- company residency with the sage (services & advocacy for glbt elders) senior center, the first of its kind in the nation. Seniors partnering with artists citywide (sparc) is a collaboration among the nyc department of cultural affairs, the department for the aging, the city's five local arts councils, and the national endowment for the arts. March 16 -- daniel is presented as a guest artist of the 2012 evolve dance festival: an evening of visionary professional dance in tarrytown, ny. Tarrytown music hall, 7:30pm. March 25 -- you don't know me, a dance choreographed and performed by gwirtzman, premieres at the flea theater as part of their dance conversations series. The sunday performance was at 3:00pm and admission was free. March 28-30 -- encore performed by the sophomore class at talent unlimited high school in manhattan. This residency was funded by tony bennett's exploring the arts foundation. These shows were the culmination of an academic year-long residency for the company. April 5-7 -- daniel is invited to perform character at dogtown dance theatre, in downtown richmond, va. Daniel teaches two master classes to area arts high schools in virginia. April 13-19 -- white room, a dance for camera film produced by the company screens during the 2012 athens international film and video festival, athens, oh. April 26 -- as part of the residency at the sage senior center, the company continues its series of free workshops. 305 seventh avenue, 15th floor, 2-3pm. April 27 the company offers a free teaching workshop at the mott haven academy charter school in the bronx by sing for hope, an amazing organization and partner. April 28 -- the nyc dance educators' 10th annual celebration of dance: nyc student dance festival in long island city, queens. April 29 -- earth day at the ym & ywha of washington heights & inwood. The company offers teaching workshops designed for everyone to join in the dance, 11-2pm. May 3 & 4 -- high school dancers from the frank sinatra school of the arts present the finale from encore in the spring concert 2012. Held at the state-of-the-art tony bennett concert hall, in astoria, 7pm. The program includes jerome robbins' opus jazz, presented in collaboration with american ballet theater. May 6 -- inception to exhibition, a new york-based organization that supports multidisciplinary art and cultivates collaborations between artists, features daniel gwirtzman in his signature solo character at their gala, sunday, may 6, from 6-9pm on west 27th st. May 18 - 20 -- the stylistically diverse, highly-acclaimed rochester city ballet debuts a thirty-minute excerpt from encore at the nazareth college arts center (rochester, ny) as part of their spring mix season. May 24 -- open workshop at sage, 305 seventh avenue, 15th floor, 2-3pm. Gwirtzman gives a lecture explaining the process of maintaining a repertory company and presents the company rehearsing new work. June 18 monday night dance hall. The uptown arts stroll and the ym & ywha of washington heights & inwood present the company. Daniel teaches social dances from different eras and introduces fun creative explorations that both singles and the entire family can enjoy. Appropriate for all levels and ages: beginners through advanced, children through seniors. June 20 -- dancing with the sages! This public event is an open free class. The sage senior center opens its doors for the culminating day of our sparc residency. The workshop is created for the involvement of the entire community regardless of age or ability. Learn exercises, folk and social dances, and explore your personal expression through creative movement. Seniors partnering with artists citywide is a community arts engagement program that places artists-in-residence at senior centers across new york. Sparc is a collaboration among the nyc department of cultural affairs, the department for the aging and the city's local arts councils. The program was developed as part of the mayor's age-friendly nyc initiative, and is supported in part by a grant from the national endowment for the arts. June 29 -- bryant park performance , daniel gwirtzman performed his signature solo character in a free performance at bryant park produced by jodi kaplan's booking dance festival, 6:00pmjuly 18 an interactive program at red bean studios, 4:00pm, daniel and the dancers present an educational interactive lecture describing the process of preparing for the jacobs pillow dance festival. July 19 -- jacob's pillow dance festival--the company presents an educational program at the gloriously renovated inside/out stage with a robust program featuring six dancers from the company. August 15-19 -- edinburgh international conference centre; booking dance festival presents daniel in character at the edinburgh international fringe festivalaugust 25-december 15 the company receives a residency at the university of north carolina school of the arts, winston-salem, ncnovember 12-17 -- the university of north carolina school of the arts, where daniel has been in residence this fall as a visiting professor and guest choreographer, presents his new dance, oracle, for eighteen dancers, november 12-17 at the university's de mille theater. December 7-9 -- the company's dance for camera film white room, which was screened last month in the dana em foco international festival of video and dance in rio de janeiro, will be shown in winston-salem, nc at the movies by movers festival. The new york-based inception to exhibition has awarded the company a space grant through 2013.
