Causes: Education, Scholarships, Scholarships & Student Financial Aid
Mission: To promote and enhance the educational facilities and services provided to the students of girard college (an elementary and secondary school) and other philadelphia area schools by raising funds from the alumni and friends for these institutions.
Programs: Student diversity initiative:funds were used to help support diversity aspirations at girard college including but not limited to a multicultural student body. Building a more diverse student body has special costs--in recruitment, in building appropriate support for students and families, and in training faculty and staff to operate effectively in multicultural classrooms. Girard focused its efforts on training its faculty and staff aspect by sending a group of individuals to attend a multi-day conference on diverse learning communities and best practices to achieve this goal. As there are 300 students who attend girard college, all of them will ultimately benefit from a diverse learning community as their in school experience projects to mirror the demographics of our communities and nation.
pennsylvania opportunity scholarship tax credit program:the program provides tax credits to eligible businesses contributing to an opportunity scholarship organization. Business contributions are then used by opportunity scholarship organizations to provide tuition assistance in the form of scholarships to eligible students residing within the boundaries of a low-achieving school in the commonwealth of pennsylvania to attend another public school outside of their district or nonpublic school. A low-achieving school is defined as a public elementary or secondary school ranking in the bottom 15 percent of their designation as an elementary or secondary school based upon combined math and reading pennsylvania system of school assessment (pssa) scores. The girard college foundation is an opportunity scholarship organization and used these proceeds to provide approximately 70 partial scholarships to students that attended girard college during the 2016-2017 school year.
pennsylvania educational improvement tax credit program:this program provides tax credits to eligible businesses contributing to scholarship organizations and/or educational improvement organizations and/or pre-k scholarship organizations contained on a list published by the department of community and economic development. Business contributions are then used by scholarship organizations and/or educational improvement organizations and/or pre-k scholarship organizations to provide tuition assistance in the form of scholarships to eligible students residing within the commonwealth of pennsylvania. The girard college foundation is a scholarship organization and used these proceeds to provide approximately five (5) partial scholarships to students that attended girard college during the 2016-2017 school year.
