My MAGICal experience was super amazing! I went into this project with just the hope to learn something new, and I learned so much more than I expected. I learned some extremely crucial skills such as writing a research paper and conducting a scientific experiment. Another wonderful thing I got to experience with this program was to be partnered up with a mentor! My mentor Vanessa, was always so happy in meetings and put in so much effort to find things to help me understand this topic, though it was only her first time as a mentor as well. Overall, MAGIC is such an amazing program to influence girls to go into STEM fields, and is very educational and enjoyable as well.
This experience was really MAGICal. Working 1 on 1 with an amazing mentor was truly the best. It overall exceeded what I really expected. She, not knowing anything about my project, stayed right beside me in the passenger's seat, and I felt like a driver. Along the way, she gave me tips and pointers, but let me make the decisions. I really enjoyed that atmosphere. I worked with a mentor who has been full-time in MAGIC and you can really see how hardworking that is. If you have a passion for STEM and a strong desire to pursue STEM this program is just for you!
My experience with MAGIC was MAGICal. I had a mentor that has been with MAGIC for over 10 years and she was super talented while also being super kind and flexible! She found the best ways possible to teach me the fundamentals of python! Through this experience, I learned how to program on python and how to create a sudoku game. There were challenging parts in learning python however having a mentor that I could always contact helped me achieve my goal. Now, I can try to create my own python games and AI! I know this will be SUPER helpful towards the future so I really think that people should have this experience(it was a life-changer in my area of coding).
I was a 2025 mentee, and had an absolutely phenomenal experience! My mentor was Smriti, and over the span of five months, we built our own web VR game. Although virtual reality was relatively new to both of us and required a lot of research and trial and error, we were (especially Smriti!) always up to the challenge! Coding always seemed like a intimidating field, but with the help of my mentor, we were able to select and focus on specific technologies and build a strong foundation for myself even as a complete beginner. I learned so much and always looked forward to our weekly virtual meetings. I'm going to miss MAGIC, but I will definitely continue my project in the future. Huge shout out to everyone part of MAGIC—thank you for everything!!
This year I was a mentee at MAGIC, and it was such an amazing experience. Being a first generation student, I've always understood how I've had increased feelings of anxiety due to this-- This is why I wanted to research more about it. Under the mentorship of Dr. Namrata Raut, I was able to understand and help this community through research and raising more awareness. I never felt any sense of doubt by Namrata and I am so grateful. She supported this passion and interest, and for that I am so grateful.
Thank you MAGIC for a great season! I was a mentee in 2025 and had a wonderful experience. I got to work with my mentor, Lindsey, on my mycologic experiment! I grew oyster mushrooms in four different substrates. Throughout my experiment I collected data, made graphs, and eventually wrote a lab write up. In addition, I visited a "Fungi Fest" and toured a mushroom farm in my neighborhood. Through MAGIC, I was able to not only learn about something completely new to me, but to engage with my community! MAGIC helped me learn how to conduct an experiment, how to share my findings, and generally expanded my STEM knowledge. Huge thank you to Lindsey and everyone who is a part of MAGIC!!
I was a MAGIC mentee this year (2025) and had a wonderful experience. I was able to explore my interest in biomedical engineering by building a deep learning model to detect Alzheimer’s Disease from a dataset. This project was so exciting to develop, and my mentor, Sneha, was so kind and helpful. Her knowledge in this field and ability to explain complex topics were crucial to the success of my project. She continues to inspire me. I learned so much because of her, including improving my coding skills in Python, understanding medical imaging, and overall presentation skills.
This past year, I was a mentee in the MAGIC program. I got to explore my interests in the biomedical field, which is something that helped me determine what I want to do in the future. I've been involved with MAGIC (More Active Girls in Computing) for over five years and every year it just keeps getting more inspiring to watch the young women (middle and high school) who participate in this program. It gives me Hope for a better future seeing these young women so passionate about areas of STEM often combined with other aspects of their life. Right next to the mentees are the incredible mentors -- women who have super busy lives (family, career, etc.) who VOLUNTEER their time to mentor young women interested in STEM. Many of the mentees go on to become mentors themselves --- keeping the cycle alive. I've seen it first-hand being part of MAGIC for all these years and totally grateful for being part of their journey.

Mentors were very helpful and provided good support and help whenever required. Eventhough INDIA and USA , time zone is different they managed very well.
Ira mam was regularly taking feedback for the program and she took personal care for all three girls.
I again thank MAGIC team for their good cause and wish them success for their future projects
It was a wonderful experience working with my mentor, Ria Sonecha. She was really patient and helped me with my project. I would highly recommend to enroll to MAGIC.
A big challenge faced by women in tech is finding relatable role models. Getmagic addresses this by pairing middle/high school girls with women professionals in STEM and allowing 1:1 project based mentorship. I am a software professional with over 30 years in tech and found my first year mentoring with Getmagic extremely satisfying. I was fortunate to work with two 9th graders. Over a period of 10 weeks, we worked 1:1 building an Andriod App with one and a simple website with another. While working on the tech projects of their choosing, the mentees also pick up other skills - how to problem solve, how to do research, how to give presentations - all valuable skills that would be required in their professional lives. GetMagic is a win-win for both mentees and mentors and I wish I had found it sooner.
I was pretty much a beginning at coding but after working with Laney all summer, I was confident in the website that we built together. I was able to learn from her to be able to code my own website where SA/SH survivors can visit it as a resource. At times, it was a little hard because I had difficulty with my code but it was such an easy fix when I asked Laney and she explained everything to me on what I did wrong and how to fix it. She was very supportive of any and all ideas that I had to build my website. I would definitely recommend MAGIC as I've learned so much in such a small amount of time!
I was a beginner coder with almost no information on how to code a website. However, I was embraced by my mentor Mona and was taught how to code using online sites and asked her questions regularly. Before I knew it, I was sitting with a completed website! MAGIC is very organized and filled with dedicating, kind staff. I had a truly rewarding experience!
I was in the MAGIC program for about 5 months and got the chance to be mentored by the amazing Agrima Bahl. This was my first time with MAGIC but it definitely won't be my last! I had a blast learning the Python needed to make my Idea Generator website plus I gained the problem solving skills that came with troubleshooting my code. The sessions were brief but impactful and Agrima was there to help me every step of the way! This was an experience I won't forget.
I was lucky enough to be paired with Anouk, who was an incredible mentor. I learned so much and my work with MAGIC made it possible for me to code in Swift and develop my own iOS application. Without this experience I'd still be wishing I could code apps, and now I can actually do it!
I really enjoyed working with my mentee to develop her interdisciplinary interests in biology and programming.
I am forever grateful that I was able to participate in the MAGIC program as a mentee. My mentor, Soja-Marie Morgens, has not only taught me so much about the STEM career field and been instrumental in creating my app, but she has been such a role model to me. Soja has been so kind and spent countless hours throughout her busy schedule on my project. I feel so lucky that I was accepted into the MAGIC program and can't wait to work with them further!
I am an 8th grader and I participated in MAGIC. My mentor was Johee Chung and we worked on an online foosball game. My experience with great and Johee was very kind and helpful. The project I made was more impressive than I was expecting. MAGIC helped me learn how to use the code I know/have learned to make a complicated game. Having a mentor was fun and helpful because I got to work with someone experienced and quickly got feedback. I am grateful for being part of the MAGIC
this year I was able to work with my mentor Jess Weinberg to create a really great project. While I went in as a beginner, I came out knowing so much more on my topic and I really loved learning everything. I now know to to analyze data, as well as code, which is something that I think will be helpful for many years to come. MAGIC was such a great experience and I loved everything that it had to offer and every step of the way!
I am a 7th grader from Thomas Russell Middle School and MAGIC has been an incredible experience because I have learned so much. I joined MAGIC because it is a great program to encourage and expose girls to STEM. I wanted to learn something new and at the same time have fun creating a project.
I worked with my brilliant mentor, Jammie Mountz, who guided me throughout the entire process. She was a fantastic mentor who has taught me more than I could ever imagine. I learned how to build a website and make animations using parallax and sprites. The one on one sessions helped me greatly and I learned about HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), and Javascript.
MAGIC has been a really amazing experience. MAGIC helped me explore Engineering and actually get to know the field. If you are interested in pursuing a field in STEM, I definitely recommend MAGIC. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity that will teach you so much and give you the passion to pursue careers in STEM. MAGIC will teach you more than you could ever learn anywhere else. Everyone was really friendly, helpful, and encouraging in this program and I could not have done it without all the extraordinary people who made MAGIC possible. Thank You!
This year I worked on characterizing the atmospheres of the inner TRAPPIST-1 planets. My mentor Samantha Gilbert was so kind and helpful, she really helped my love for astronomy grow! In the beginning, I was an absolute beginner with no previous knowledge of coding, but now I feel like I've learned so much about coding and science as a whole! Although there were definitely a lot of errors and obstacles in the process, it was very satisfying to see our success in the end. I'm definitely going into a career in STEM when I get older. I'm so grateful to Samantha and everyone at MAGIC for giving me the opportunity to learn more about something that I love. Thank you!!
My name is Isabella, and I am a junior at Marymount School of New York. This past semester (spring of 2022), I worked with Sarah Rice on a research project looking at NASA's exoplanet database. I started using python and pandas to analyze my data, which was the first time I had ever used those tools. Sarah was so supportive and encouraged me to try new things and pursue what interested me. I loved how Sarah and I were able to talk about so many other things in addition to my project. We had some great discussions on the importance of women's representation in STEM as well as different Marvel movies or Broadway shows. I looked forward to meeting with my mentor each week, and I am so grateful that she set aside time to work with me. During my time with MAGIC, I also had the incredible opportunity to talk with several women in the field of astronomy/astrophysics, which allowed me to ask them questions about my project while also learning about what it would be like on an everyday basis to go into that field.
My mentor was Dev Lebowiz. We met once and sometimes twice a week. I created a website called ‘Beyond The Visit’ where I explained all the information a person would need to know to be able to understand neurodegenerative research papers posted daily. There are also links to group chats for relatives and clinical trials going on right now. There are some subpages that even explain specific important papers. My experience was amazing! I bonded with my mentor well and we created further than what I imagined for my website and reached limits I didn’t think I could. Watching my friends produce their projects was also fascinating and very fun to talk about it.
Hi! My name is Ruth Ginsburg and I am in ninth grade at SKA. I always had an interest in medical related topics, so I thought MAGIC would be a great experience. While working with my amazing mentor Dana Gage, I truly grew and expanded my passion. I now know a lot about coding, and medical technology (my new field of interest). Overall a great program that supports female involvement in stem!!
I really enjoyed MAGIC and working with Kathryn, my mentor. She was very helpful and always supported me. I had a lot of fun learning Python and coding games in it. Overall, it was great and I would highly recommend it.
My experience has been wonderful. My mentor, Venmathi was kind and helpful. I told her what I was hoping to achieve. My final project was probably one of my proudest moments. In the beginning, Venmathi helped me debug and improve my code. By the end of the program, I realized that I could debug my code by myself. I also got to make a calculator. I was always wondering how they worked, and I finally found out! I am so thankful that my Mentor took the time to teach me.
I am a current 7th grader, and I was a part of the MAGIC program for the past 5 months. I joined MAGIC so I could further pursue my passion in STEM. I wanted to take a deeper dive into AI and projecting a computer's ideas through sound. My mentor, Jaelle Scheurman, was very exceptional, sharp, and someone who held my hand and guided me throughout the whole process. One-on-one's with her really helped me understand and progress through concepts easily. Especially when we were editing code that I couldn't understand, Jaelle walked me through each function step by step. I really learnt a lot from her, and I wouldn't have been able to complete my project without her.
I really recommend MAGIC for any girls interested in STEM and coding. This is a great way to broaden your knowledge of technology! The MAGIC program gives young women a chance to think out of the box, and explore a new world of possibilities in STEM. It enables the local talents to be paired with some of the brightest minds in the United States. It really does help bring forth girls to brainstorm and create new ideas in this field.
Kudos to the MAGIC organization for coming up with such a thought process, wherein an exposure is given to the newest and greatest possibilities in STEM through very capable guidance and mentors.
Thank you MUSD and MAGIC for bringing this all together, and opening up new pathways for young minds, such as myself!
~Rancho 2022 student
I volunteered as a mentor with MAGIC. It was truly rewarding to guide a young student on a project and watch her learn to trust herself and her abilities and believe that she can pursue study in a STEM field. This organization does great work!
I has a great time as a mentee with Magic! I learned a lot with the help of my mentor Shami and created a project I am proud of.
Doing MEP allowed me to take my interest in the environment and animals and apply it to software, in terms of problem solving. Working with my mentor, Tammy gave me the opportunity to have someone there to guide me when I got stuck during the brainstorming and redesigning process of my project. My mentor constantly reminded me of the importance to what I was learning, especially since I was using an unfamiliar coding website for the first time to develop my app, which helped solve the issue on light pollution and it’s effect on baby sea turtles.
My experience with MAGIC was the best!! I can't express how much I loved it. My mentor, Atara, helped me out a lot in exploring my interests in Engineering. I honestly learned a lot about engineering, I learned that some areas of engineering also involve programing and coding, I didn't know that. I also found out that engineering is something I was to continue to explore due to MAGIC and have a lot of explanation on how the area of engineering sort of works in the real world. I have a lot to thank MAGIC and My mentor, without them I would of not learned and loved engineering as I do now.
MAGIC helped me gain more confidence and experience coding. I learned about the basics of python and turtle in a one on one setting with my mentor Pi-Chuan, a software engineer. I think that learning one on one was a completely different experience from learning in a class because I was able to pursue topics and projects that I was interested in. In addition, I was able to ask many questions, and practice things that I needed to work on, while going quickly on things that I understood well. For example, I enjoyed incorporating visual elements into my projects, and making them more user friendly, so we worked on that a lot. In general, I believe that MAGIC is a great opportunity for any girl who is curious about STEM.
The MAGIC program was a great way to further my interest in computer coding and explore new concepts. My mentor was Juhi Bhatnagar. She encouraged me to look up things that I didn't know yet and still provided enough information to help me if I ever did run into any problems. I got to choose what I wanted to focus on, from building/coding websites to creating a game. MAGIC was a fantastic program for me and a great opportunity in general for girls all around the world to further their ideas.
I had an amazing time doing MAGIC through my school. My mentor, Jenny Ho, was really considerate, really kind, and taught me a lot. I'm really thankful and glad that I had this opportunity. Having someone help me one-on-one was really helpful for me, and I think it was a unique experience I would definitely do again.
This is my first year with Magic as a mentor and I was matched with a high school student in New York who is passionate about astronomy. It has been very fulfilling to collaborate with her. While I taught my mentee how to create data visualizations using Python and host a website on Github, she also taught me a few things about Exoplanets! Overall, it has been a wonderful experience.
I mentored through this program, and I'm amazed at how loving and genuine the MAGIC community is towards these young girls. Mentors are encouraged to tailor each program to the mentee's needs, and the facilitators check in regularly to make sure they can help remove any roadblocks for the mentor. I felt strongly supported the whole time, and felt so gratified watching my mentee grow throughout the semester
I am a mentor and have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the wonderful and intelligent young women I have had the honor to work with. The projects are open ended and the Magic community is an email away with support and advice. Mentoring remotely has made it easy for to connect with mentees outside my immediate community which has been extremely rewarding. Magic does a great job of making the mentors and mentees feel connected to the Magic community at large. I'm so glad to be involved with this wonderful organization.
I was a mentee with this organization in high school, and returned to be a mentor because their mission to engage more young girls in stem careers is inspiring
This past summer, I was a part of the MAGIC program and I absolutely LOVED it. Although i applied to the program very late, and only had a few weeks to work on my project, the people at MAGIC were very accommodating and understood my situation. Additionally, my mentor Ria was so sweet and helped me answer all of my questions. She helped me developed my idea/project, and I don't know where my project would be without her. I am so grateful for my experience with MAGIC and highly recommend that other young girls apply and try it as well.
I was a MAGIC mentee for Summer 2021. Despite COVID-related limitations and the total shift to online, getMagic program was exceptionally systematic and a lot of fun at the same time. Apart form the main focus of my project, app-making, I learnt a lot from my mentor, Manaswi Kashyap. She has a bright personality and I was quite impressed how she was always ready to learn and explore new things and ideas. She was consistently ready to help me throughout the project and was extremely flexible with the project idea and our meeting sessions. I sincerely appreciate the MAGIC Program. It is an awesome program for young girls in STEM and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
This was my second summer working with getMagic and both experiences were nothing like I expected. I didn’t realize how many resources and life long skills like excel, interviewing, and public speaking I would gain for such a short amount of time through a laptop screen. This year I worked with Lauren Sutehall on a app called engineerable for teens. She was very flexible and transparent with me and helped me discover a passion for engineering. I absolutely reccomend getMagic for other young girls like me interested in learning more about STEM from an professional in the field. Thank you!
I have no regrets joining GetMagic as a mentee! I was browsing online looking for a program to participate in the summer 2021 and found GetMagic which is a STEM mentor and mentee program, I applied as a mentee. Then after getting an email telling me that I was accepted in the program I met my mentor Jammie. My mentor Jammie is an expert! She taught me a lot about software engineering and thanks to her help I was able to create a website that I've dreamed of. Not only that but I feel more confident in learning more about coding and pursuing a career in software engineering. I honestly recommend joining the GetMagic program because you can learn so much from the GetMagic mentors and create an amazing project by the end of the program.
I had the best experience with MAGIC. During the pandemic, I really wanted to do something with coding, and I found MAGIC. Immediately, I was placed with my mentor Laney, a computer science professor at Northeastern University. I had an idea for a password-generating app, and she was enthusiastic about it. I used Xcode and Swift to create this app. Laney gave me various tools and resources that I could learn from, helping me along the process of developing an app. I truly loved my experience, and I would definitely do it again.
In my second mentorship through MAGIC, I worked with my mentor Sarah on the Alcubierre warp drive. It took me some time to find out that this was what I wanted to work on within physics, but Sarah was always incredibly supportive and conveyed the message that the deadline I had was only for showing others how far I had gotten - it didn't mean I had to be completely done. This made me relax and learn for the sake of learning, which made my experience very enjoyable. I learned how to use LaTeX, matplotlib.pyplot, and Overleaf, in addition to learning about the physics of warp drives. I finished the first draft of my review article on the topic. And though I had many, many useful and insightful conversations with Sarah throughout the project, I'd have to say that my favorites were the ones we had before I chose a final project - those were the ones where we let our creativities shine and had many ideas for other projects that I might pursue in the future. Thank you MAGIC and Sarah for this wonderful opportunity!

When I first applied to be a MAGIC mentee, I had no idea how much I would learn. I applied a little late, but they found me a mentor, Devon Lindsey, regardless, which already showed their commitment to helping every girl interested in STEM. I was their first international mentee (I'm from Brazil), which seemed like a big responsability, but my experience was fun and surprising. I was very used to learning in a class-format, where the person in front of me would tell me exactly what to do and how to do it. Devon and all other MAGIC mentors managed to teach in a much more flexible way. I ended up making a blog on quantum computing in Portuguese after I noticed a lack of resources in the field. Devon is a tech lead at Apple and she had a lot of experience with web development. She teached me about debugging tools, GitHub and GitHub Pages, JavaScript, some advanced concepts in HTML/CSS and even one thing or two about cache. But mostly, Devon teached me how to be comfortable not knowing, and remain confident when that happens. She teached me to ask for help and work in a team. I now have a much better idea of what a career in STEM, and specifically in computer science, is like. Before MAGIC, I was sure I wanted to become a theoretical physicist. Now, that remains an option but I'm equally excited about the intersection of physics and computing, and I plan on either double-majoring or completing a minor in computer science. I recommend this program for any girl interested in STEM, regardless of experience or specific area of interest. Thank you, MAGIC!
I am mother of a mentee who has been part of Summer 2021 session. I feel this program opens a window for girls to understand STEM and actually sparks interest in them in this field. In particular to my daughter, I am grateful that she got this opportunity. I can see growth in her thinking horizon, soft skills and aptitude towards technology and big thanks to MAGIC team for this contribution.
I joined GetMagic as a mentor and had a really amazing time working with a student in New York. The time commitment was really manageable and it was amazing to work with someone who was so driven. We put together a really nice project and I saw the student learn so much from the time I spent with her. I would recommend mentoring with GetMagic!
My experience here at MAGIC was great! This program allows young girls to explore many stem related fields and finalise a project of there choice! I love this program because there is no limit to what you can do, anyone can come to this program and focus on their topic of choice and something your passionate about! This program is a great way to get young women empowered and eager to explore careers related to stem. I came in with an interest of working on genetic engineering and wasn’t to sure if they would allow me to explore this career, but they made it possible to work and explore anything I was interested in! I got paired up with Michelle who was an awesome mentor to me and always gave me a helping hand when needed and expanded her help and knowledge to help me work on my final project. Michelle was a really great mentor who was always really flexible in working with me on anything I wanted to and was a really kind person and I would have been able to do it without her!
When I had the chance to be a part of this program, I set my goals (and set them high). I figured it would leave me with something to continue striving for by the time the mentorship was over. However, to my delight, with the help of my incredible mentor, Dr. Jaelle Scheuerman, I was able to surpass those goals by leaps and bounds. My final project harnessed machine learning to generate sarcastic text! If you think that sounds cool, trust me, it was. This has truly been a life-changing experience. I would recommend this program to anyone – seriously, it's awesome. Thank you MAGIC, this is something I'll never forget!
Ever since I was a little girl I've been pushed to explore STEM and strongly consider it as a career option. "STEM is the future" is a phrase I constantly heard. But it wasn't until now that I could really see myself working in tech.
I never wanted to live my life coding, only sitting behind a screen, and I also couldn't see myself being an engineer. And with the limited tech exposure that I had, that is what I imagined most STEM careers would be like. Still, I was encouraged to pursue STEM, so I entered the STEM program at my school. Again, the focus was placed on coding and engineering.
Finally, I heard of MAGIC, and I decided to apply to experience what a career in STEM could really look like for me, and I was blown away.
I was paired with an incredible mentor, Lea Speiser, who was able to explain everything to me personally and answer any small questions I might have. Product/Interaction design is a field that I could actually envision myself doing in the future. I really enjoyed the whole process and am so glad to have participated in this incredible program.
This program was amazing, it gave me an opportunity to immerse myself in a topic that I am very interested in! It also paired me up with an amazing mentor Dr.Mindy Levine who not only taught me a lot but also showed me a great example of what it’s like to be a woman in STEM.
Growing up I was told that women in STEM could never be happy and that woman can’t do everything they can’t have a job in STEM, a family, and a successful career. Participating MAGIC proved otherwise it showed me numerous women who did just that, who were in the STEM field and had successful careers and a family. Just for showing me that I am very thankful to the MAGIC program!
I came into the MAGIC program not knowing what to expect. Saying that it far exceeded my expectations is an understatement. My mentor, Ira Pramanick, created an environment in which I felt comfortable asking questions and taking risks, which helped me learn to the best of my ability. At the same time, my mentor always made sure that we were working on things that I was genuinely interested in, making the learning process extremely fun! For example, I wanted to build an app to combat the struggles of having dietary restrictions. Although I had almost no prior coding experience, my mentor gave me the knowledge and support I needed to turn my ideas into reality. She helped me realize that coding is something that I am capable of doing, and more importantly, that it is something I am really interested in (and now want to pursue in college)! I am so grateful to have gotten the opportunity to be a MAGIC mentee, as this was truly the most rewarding program I have taken part in. Thank you so much to my mentor and MAGIC :)
I don't know where to begin; I honestly do not have words to express my gratitude for what Ira Pramanick did for Anika. All I can say is that if it weren't for Ira’s mentorship, Anika wouldn't have been able to come this far in her MAGIC program endeavor. The knowledge she gained and the confidence she developed is going to help her lot going forward as she delves deeper in the field of Computer Science. Thanks to Ira, programming no longer intimidates Anika. If at all, she is further intrigued by it. She now sees endless possibilities of what can be created. Thank you Ira and MAGIC!
I am an administrator at Brooklyn Laboratory Charter Schools and MAGIC filled a critical void for our girls interested in STEM. Our school serves primarily Black and brown low-income students who traditionally do not have exposure to STEM careers. Two of our scholars participated in the MAGIC mentorship program over the 20-21 school year and gained coding, communication, professional, and time management skills. We are so grateful to be a MAGIC partner and look forward to many more impactful mentorship sessions!
I had a wonderful experience with MAGIC. I joined knowing next to nothing about computer science, and by the end of the year, I had built a website. My mentor, Leeba Erlbaum, was incredibly capable, knowledgeable, and innovative, and she taught me everything I needed to know. Together, we covered a large set of topics and technologies that will be instrumental in all of my future projects. She also showed me what a career in tech could look like, and inspired me to keep studying computer science. I'm very grateful to have learned so much from Leeba and to be a part of the MAGIC program.
I have always been interested in the STEM field but I didn’t think I would have the opportunity to express my talents and passion until later on in life. MAGIC gave me the opportunity to work one on one with a mentor on a research study. My mentor, Naomi Rosenbach, gave me so much of her time weekly to work with me on a project that she was so passionate about. It’s so important for a teacher to love what they are doing. Naomi showed me that teaching isn’t just about passing down the information to the student, but it is also important to share the love that they have for that subject. Every week, she gave me her undivided attention to work on the study, and I am so grateful to have had her as a mentor.
As for the research study, I was measuring the effects between friendship, mood, and hyper vigilance in high school freshman, at the beginning and end of high school. I made my own measure, that was not validated and got approval to do my study. I sent out a survey asking participants a few questions about friendship and mood at the beginning and end of freshman year in high school. Among interesting friendship demographics, I found from the study, I found that there is no correlation between friendship, mood, and hyper vigilance in the beginning of high school. However, there was a significant correlation later on into high school.
I’d, again like to thank MAGIC for this amazing opportunity and for giving me the chance to work with Naomi, a stellar role model in the STEM community.

Freshman at Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls
My experience with MAGIC was amazing. I was able to work with an amazing mentor, Aviva Oppenheim to create a prototype of something I had always wanted to create. I was able to experience product development firsthand and was able to watch my idea come to life. My project was creating a customized case for infusion pumps in hospitals for children to make it less scary and to let them choose something in their room. I had an incredible experience and would do it again if I could.
My experience of being a mentee for the first time was very exciting and enjoyable. I was able to code my first game and expand my knowledge of multiple coding languages. My mentor Stephanie Chou was very enthusiastic and easy to connect with, similar to most staff I've encountered during this program. I would definitely rejoin this project again one day.
MAGIC has provided incredible mentorship for my high school students. Through MAGIC's rigorous matching process, the students were provided with role models and mentors in all different fields of STEM. The projects they produced ranged from phsychology research experiments to website and app development to mechanical engineering and 3-D printing. Truly an outstanding program!
I am a 7th grader and joined this program in hopes to learn to code. My mentor Nandika was patient with me during the program, and I learned a lot from her. I appreciated the one-on-one sessions and working independently with my mentor to create a final project that I am proud of. I am glad that I applied as a mentee and had this opportunity. I highly recommend applying for MAGIC to any middle schoolers out there!
I had a really fun time working with my mentor, Lu.
Overall, I had an AMAZING time in the MAGIC program.
MAGIC is an amazing organization that I'm honored to have partnered with! Each staff member is incredibly thoughtful and student driven. They go above and beyond to ensure that all of the mentees have a wonderful experience and are matched with just the right mentor. The mentees' projects and presentations were inspiring, and I'm looking forward to continuing our partnership next season!
My experience was amazing! I learned a lot in this experience. I want to thank my mentor, Yan. She was amazing to work with. We had so much fun with everything! Yan boosted my confidence up and made feel happy on what I accomplished. Thank you Yan.
MAGIC was a great experience! I would definitely recommend this program to anyone interested in learning about computer science. My mentor, Divina, made sure she was always available to support me and was super patient since I came in with zero experience. I loved the one on one experience and am super grateful for this opportunity.
I greatly enjoyed being a MAGIC mentee. My mentor Deepa, was amazing and provided me with lots of knowledge about the STEM field. I definitely learned a lot. I got to really develop my interests in the STEM field and work on a project. I gained a lot through this mentorship. Thank you MAGIC for a truly MAGICAL experience.
The MAGIC Program was an amazing way for me to explore my interests in technology. I had such a great time working with my mentor, Smriti, and I was able to learn more from her about pursuing a career in STEM, which is something I intend to do in the future. Through the program, I delved more into app development and combined my academic interests with my passion for coding. The experience as a whole taught me so much, and I'm so grateful for this opportunity!
I have really loved working with my mentor Shilpa, and I have learned so much. I really enjoyed taking my previous knowledge of python and combining that with pygame and creating a really awesome project. Working 1 on 1 with somebody who worked in the stem field was a really amazing experience, and I had a lot of fun creating an amazing game. I am so happy that I took this opportunity to be part of the MAGIC program and have learned so much! I am so lucky that I have been able to be a part of this amazing program.
As a mentee in the MAGIC program, I was able to learn about creating a 3D game, and different assets in the Unity platform. It was wonderful exploring different paths in STEM, especially learning about programming, and scripts. My mentor Pi-Chuan, did a great job explaining everything to me, and we had a lot of fun exploring Unity and C# together! I am very happy that I was paired with Pi-Chuan!
Our students at Eastside School have benefitted a lot from participating in the MAGIC program. It has been such a great opportunity for our students to work with their mentors on a long term project where they can pursue a topic of their interest while learning valuable technical and organizational skills. We appreciate all of the time and effort the MAGIC mentors invest in our students. They are wonderful role models and have inspired our students to think seriously about pursuing STEM careers. All of our students have also gained a tremendous amount of confidence by working with their mentor and completing a substantive project. We greatly appreciate all that Ira and the MAGIC team do to motivate middle and high school girls to pursue STEM opportunities.
I love thinking back to four years ago when I first connected with Ira and Kim. Our education nonprofit based in Salem, MA was a few years into trying to make our Girls Who Code program at LEAP get off the ground, and wondering if a partnership with MAGIC would be a better avenue to support young women. Turns out - it is! Very grateful to this organization for partnering with us and ensuring each student gets the highest quality opportunity possible through both the tangible and intangible resources provided. Our organization has been working with MAGIC for two years now, and the growth of the students who work with a MAGIC mentor never ceases to amaze me! I've seen students give a group presentation for the first time, and actually vision themselves as capable of a future in STEM, which is so exciting! We've participated in a lot of STEM programming, and I think this type of one-on-one mentoring is the most impactful.
I started mentoring for GetMagic in 2021 and it's been a fantastic experience! Both the mentees and mentors learn together and we form a special bond working through STEM related projects. What a great program!
I was a mentee in Magic during the Summer 2020 session. This was my first time being a part of any type of mentorship program and I genuinely had no idea what to expect. Magic was amazing and helped me develop my interests in the STEM field and also gave me some much-needed lessons on professionalism. My mentor was Shami Ahuja and it was fantastic to work with her on a website; she truly went above and beyond to help me learn how to learn. I would recommend this program to all young girls who are curious about STEM and want to learn. My time was truly MAGICal and I highly encourage others to join for future sessions!
I was a MAGIC mentee for the Summer of 2020. Despite COVID-related complications and having to move everything online, the program was incredibly rewarding and a lot of fun! My mentor, Bishakha Mona, was incredibly supportive of my interest and passion for neuroscience and provided me with all the resources I needed to create my project. It was such an amazing way to further my enthusiasm for STEM, and to connect with so many girls and women who were pursuing their own passions.
I participated in MAGIC as a mentee in the Summer 2020 session, under the mentorship of Smriti Pramanick. MAGIC was my first experience in a mentorship program and I was really impressed. I came into MAGIC with a vague idea of my interests and came out with a functioning project. My mentor did a great job of balancing support with room to grow. I sincerely appreciate the MAGIC program and would recommend it to anyone.
My daughter had a fantastic experience with Getmagic this summer using SQL to study data on Race and COVID 19 in New York City. The ability to delve deeply into two very important issues of the moment with the support of her Mentor brought the work to life in a meaningful and powerful way. This experience is helping her refine her thinking on college choice and a career in STEM by seeing how the use of scientific research and data analytics can have an impact on health outcomes in underserved communities.
I had an amazing experience at this program. Not only was I able to meet and learn from my amazing mentor, Lakshmi, but I was able to work on a project with her that I am very proud of and am interested on working on past this program. It has been a truly enjoyable and influential program to take part in. Not only will mentees be paired with the best of mentors who clearly want to help them succeed, but they will gain more confidence and knowledge along the way!
I had an incredible experience mentoring with getMAGIC. I loved having the opportunity to gain real advice and guidance from my mentor Priyanka Bhojwani, who is a woman working in STEM. Her enthusiasm and passion for my project: learning SQL and doing data analysis on COVID-19 and Race in NYC, was inspiring and helped me stay focused and motivated throughout the 10 week mentorship. I was so grateful to have had this experience and I would recommend a MAGIC mentorship to any middle or high school girl who is interested in learning more about a future in STEM while working on a longterm project.
My experience with MAGIC was a time where I felt supported by many people to make my project a reality. My first time mentoring with the program I was able to get one on one mentorship with my mentor Ira. She was truly helpful and a great person to guide me through what I wanted to accomplish. Even though the session was over we continued to keep in touch afterwards. My second time mentoring, I had the help from my mentor, Juhi, who was there to guide me through the process and was always an email or text away when I felt stuck and needed the support. She was also able to explain things to me in a way that made sense to me and easy to comprehend.
I highly recommend this program for anyone with a passion for STEM as it truly follows through with their mission with helping girls follow their passion with the tools and resources necessary to do so.

MAGIC was a great opportunity for me and I enjoyed it a lot. I learned three different programing languages HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I have never learned this before but this program thought me in a way that I was able to understand. Overall I enjoyed this experience and I hope to create something in the future based of on the things I have learned.
After my internship was canceled this year I was looking for a way to be involved in the sciences over the summer. I applied to become a part of the Magic mentorship and after an application and an interview, I was given a mentor who would help me with whatever I wanted to research over the summer. My mentor was always excited about our weekly meetings and was willing to help me research anything I wanted. I chose a biology topic to research and my mentor helped to send me research papers to read and discuss. I not only got to delve and research a topic I was interested in but also learned key presentation slide skills and public speaking skills as well. This mentorship was a great opportunity and I am very glad I was able to participate in it.

Being apart of magic this year was such an incredible opportunity and I learned so much about epedimiological reasearch, survey study and design, and much more. I had my incredible mentor, Dr Mermelstein who without her, I would not have had any of he resources or knowledge about my project and it would not have come to me. Thank you magic for this opportunity!
This was my first year with MAGIC, and it was one of the most fulfilling and rewarding mentoring experiences I’ve ever had.
MAGIC fills a real need: in spite of efforts to encourage women to pursue STEM careers, high-school girls are still missing the resources and role models they need to spark and maintain their interest in STEM fields. For example, I found out my mentee’s school tried to start a computer science class, but they could not find a qualified teacher, the girls in the class had a bad experience, and the school abandoned the effort.
Through MAGIC, girls develop their STEM skills via personalized projects that are tailored to their interests. Each mentee spend hours learning from a female role model who has a professional career in a STEM field.
Seeing the inspiring final presentations from my mentee and her peers reinforced my opinion that MAGIC is a practical and successful way to ensure the future of women in STEM.
I had the privilege of participating in the magic program this year and was able to study many aspects of physics, sound, and music, which I am very passionate about. With the help of my incredible mentor, Racquel Glickman, I was able to accomplish so many things I never thought possible. Thank you so much MAGIC!
This program really opened up my eyes to see that there is a whole community who feels just the same as I do. When I was little, the boys in my class would always make fun of me that I was in a math enrichment class and that I loved science. But now I see that I don’t have to be afraid to do what I love. Magic has definitely helped me realize that. Magic has also jumpstarted my further interest in pursuing a career in science. My mentor, Mindy Levine, showed me how. She works in the chemistry field and loves her job. She tests products that have to do with chemistry to help people’s lives, has written over 50 papers that have to do with science in her lifetime, and has really inspired me to become someone who I never thought possible of being. I learned through Magic to be strong about what I want to do and be interested in, and not be afraid to learn about science. This really opened up so many new doors for me and I will take the things learned from Magic when I start my path on becoming a doctor. This was an amazing experience and I am so impressed by how much it inspired me to become who I have always wanted to be. Thank you.
It is astonishing how one program can transform a fearful girl into an empowered, experienced person ready to make her way into the STEM community. As many girls approach college, they are surrounded by the influence of a male-dominant technological world, and generally think that they would not be able to keep up with their male peers.
MAGIC has given me valuable knowledge at one of the most unstable times of my life. It has enabled me to find my passion in computing despite being outnumbered by male students, and has done so in a constantly positive, encouraging, and supportive environment.
MAGIC has helped me achieve many things during my first experiences with it.
Firstly, it has paved a path of success for me during a time of confusion and indecision.
After MAGIC, I now have a female role model who has shown me that girls CAN pursue their dreams in STEM, with hard work and dedication. Deepa Kalkunte, the very first mentor in my life, has the ideal mentor characteristics- incredibly kind, utterly patient, and she has the unique talent of harnessing young ladies' interests into engaging projects they can learn from. She is always open to questions, gets past confusions, and embraces new ideas. She always can see the promising attributes in me. She draws respect whenever I talk to her; yet, is so close to me I feel as if I can always rely on her, no matter what.
Another benefit of the MAGIC program is that it disposes of stereotypes, and through fun and engaging projects, it builds an understanding of the world around it. Through that philosophy, it helped me understand the technology that so much of our world is based on- from everyday life to work, and economy. The freedom to choose and develop my own ideas with the guide of my mentor with every step- that’s the magic of MAGIC! I felt magically empowered with extra knowledge that I will be able to use- no matter which pathway I will choose in the future.
I could thrive just as well or even better than our male counterparts can.
MAGIC connects girls to mentors who are hardworking women who show that it is in fact possible to make that connection with computing and technology, to gain an understanding of it. MAGIC allows girls to commit to their goals and dreams.
Recently, I attended my last robotics class session before realizing that I was the only girl in the class. Between my first class and then, I had great interactions with the other boys in my class as well as the all male volunteers who conduct the sessions. No, I didn’t feel intimidated at all. It was then that I realized what MAGIC has given me: the confidence to stand strong within a male-dominant technological world. Thank you MAGIC!
Good luck, future mentees- you will love this program, too.
MAGIC was a great way for me to explore STEM in an in-depth way. My mentor, Tiffany Nguyen, was an amazing mentor. She encouraged me to look up things that I didn't know yet still provided enough information to help me if I ever ran into any problems. At MAGIC, you can choose what you want to do, from making websites to building robots. MAGIC is an amazing program for girls and it is a great opportunity.
This is the second year that our school partnered with MAGIC. Both expeirences were amazing experiences for the students and all involved. The girls had very encouraging and knowledgeable mentors and were able to pursue projects in their field of interest. Working with the people at MAGIC to set everything up was smooth and easy. Even with the pandemic and the second half of the year being especially difficult, the student was able to complete her project and present it.
This was my first year with MAGIC and I didn't know what to expect. I had lots of hope for this program, and it turns out...
MAGIC did more than just meet my expectations. Thanks to my mentor, Michelle, I was able to explore my interests independently and put together a website about psychology (using HTML, CSS, and JS) that I am very proud of. I loved working with Michelle every week and I can assure you, having a good mentor makes the MAGICal experience even better. With Michelle, I was able to work on my final products and have fun at the same time!
Along with the research and technology skills I've learned from MAGIC, I've gained life skills, such as persevering through challenges and making the best of resources provided. I've also gained experience in public speaking and interactive presentations.
Overall, I think MAGIC is such a wonderful journey that should definitely be experienced by so many more people.
I loved my experience with MAGIC! The program is one-on-one so you really get a personalized experience and curriculum that is made based off of what project you want to create. My Mentor, Jaelle, really helped me understand the basics of HTML and Javascript to help me create my projects. I highly recommend signing up.
I am a 6th grader and was somewhat interested in computer science, and my teacher CS reached out to me and said, "you should try this." I applied and got in, and it was defiantly a great experience. My mentor, Smriti, really made this enjoyable and exciting! I got to try something new, and have that exposure to computer science in a deeper way than I have been before. Although I might not have a career in computer science or coding, I am very happy I got this experience and had the opportunity to explore something new. Going through MAGIC really benefited me in not just my knowledge of computer science, but being more responisable and other important life lessons. Anyway, I would recommend this to anyone who may think they have an interest in CS because MAGIC is a really great program, and the mentors are very helpful.
My experience in Magic was amazing. I was paired with my amazing mentor Jess who was able to help guide me through this experience. I learned a lot about coding but also important life skills to use in the future. I’m grateful for Ira for letting me be part of this program and for my mentor Jess who helped me learn something new while making it fun.
As a junior, it was important to me to be able to engage in different extracurriculars to learn more about potential majors and careers. When Ira Pramanick, founder of MAGIC, presented me with the opportunity to learn more about the topics i’m interested in, while simultaneously learning how to code, I was more than happy to participate in the MAGIC program. I learned how to develop my own website, style it how I wanted, learn different coding languages, use different technologies to host my website, meet with my mentor, and learn/reference the code. Having knowledge on how to code opens doors for me in fields related to STEM. It helped influence my decision to pursue a minor in Chemistry, while continuing to expand my knowledge on code. It was an amazing experience and where I was in charge of what I put in the website, what the website was about, and the different components of it; my mentor was just there for guidance. MAGIC gave me the exposure I needed, to learn more about STEM. As a woman of color, it was important for me to learn about different careers, majors, and fields, related to STEM, that I can study for in college. To me, it’s really important that young women are being exposed to STEM, because there are not a lot of women in STEM related careers. I would encourage other girls my age to join the MAGIC program! MAGIC had such a positive impact on me, and I hope that throughout the years, the number of participants increases because it is an opportunity of a lifetime.
I'm a current 7th grader and this was an amazing program. Unlike a school class or online tutorial, I got to be very independent with the project. I got to choose what I wanted to focus on and how to design it. It is also great for one on one questions with your mentor. I also got an inside look at how it would be like to work on a big project relating to STEM. My mentor and I bonded over many things and she is such a great person. I was so lucky to have her there through the thick and thin of this project. It was great and I definitely recommend it.
As a middle school mentee, this organization helped me learn and grow in computer science. It is very interesting, and I learned a lot. It is also incredibly helpful. I am grateful for being able to participate in this amazing experience.
Ira and team,
Thanks for the opportunity for another great mentoring session. There were times in the year that I found myself weighed down by work and thought at the end of the workday that talking to a middle schooler was the least fun thing to do. But each interaction got me motivated and I am glad I persevered.
I have heard back from past mentees on how having someone to talk to one-on-one made such an impact on their lives. Whether they pursue STEM careers or not, we are giving them something special. An opportunity to even the playing field, even if it is one fold at a time. We are demystifying the field of computers even for the most reluctant student, and at the end they finish with great sense of accomplishment.
As I saw the presentations from all the students in MUSD, (being in VA, I have not attended many such ), I was so impressed by the students and felt humbled when I saw the efforts of the other mentors.
Kudos to you all, and Ira, I don’t know how you do it. While it takes a village to run a program like this, it certainly needs someone strong and dedicated like you at the helm.
Thank you for all you and others do to leave the world more equitable for our rising young women

I’ve been vested in the MAGIC program as a mentor the past few years and this year, I got an opportunity to experience another side of it. My daughter, Kamna, a seventh grader, was accepted into the program and was mentored by the founder of the program Ms.Ira Pramanick. I cannot express my appreciation enough for the program and Ms. Pramanick as I watched my daughter transform from an individual ‘looking in’ on software development to someone fully participating in it. With her mentor’s patient tutelage, Kamna grew increasingly comfortable with the technology she was working with, and gained confidence in coding by learning HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Kamna and her mentor discussed her interest in architecture and developed an interactive website to showcase models that Kamna built using Google SketchUp. Her mentor suggested the use of GitHub for source control and hosting. All this was accomplished meeting weekly and remotely over Google Hangout. Thanks to the amazing mentoring by Ms.Pramanick, Kamna has a better understanding of software and a new and exciting world opened to her.
MAGIC has helped me become more passionate about technology. My mentor, Sarah, was very awesome and was very supportive! The whole process has taught me a lot, like learning from my mistakes! It has been a great experience and I highly recommend applying for MAGIC!
MAGIC was such a wonderful experience and it introduced the amazing world of coding and STEM to me. My mentor Shilpa was so awesome and willing to help me with my project. I learned so much from her. It was also great having a mentor because she was like a role model to me and showed me what I could potentially do with a career in STEM. It was a truly MAGICal experience and I would love to do it again!
MAGIC was a really great experience overall! I loved getting to build a website and working with my mentor, Komal, because of her generosity. The whole process has taught me so much, including how to stay patient and learn from my mistakes. It has been a highlight of my year so far, and I highly recommend applying for MAGIC!
It has been an MAGICAL experience working with this non-profit for last 2 years. I have worked with two mentees on creative projects designed by them. Getmagic Corporation is doing a great job helping girls get involved in STEM at early ages. I feel fortunate to be a able to be part of this amazing team of great humans who are helping with their heart to help all the young girls.
My daughter, Sophia, had a great experience participating in the MAGIC program over this summer. Initially, she was apprehensive about the process, because she didn't know if she was passionate about computer science. However, after getting to know her mentor, Shilpa, and due to the malleability of the program, she was able to craft a game from scratch, and was able to incorporate her creativity in a subject she initially thought was rigid and inflexible. She was able to talk to experts in the field, and had the opportunity to present her project at the Google facility. This program provided her with the opportunity to learn how Computer Science and creativity are interwoven, and has renewed her passion for CS and has put her on a focused path to pursuing her interests. Ira was a fantastic help, and such an inspiration in putting the program together and motivating young girls in STEM. She and the hard working mentors juggled full time jobs and family as well as volunteering as mentors, and we are very grateful for the effort they have put into making this program as influential and life changing as it is. A big thanks to the MAGIC program for such an incredible and unique experience!
What a fantastic experience to see how the program transformed my daughter into an enthusiastic coder! The program Managers and mentors were inspiring and totally dedicated to make a difference!!
This year I participated in the magic program for the first time! As a 9th grader, I never had the opportunity to get one on one lessons on programming and gained so much knowledge just within these past 10 weeks. Despite being a remote mentee, my mentor Komal helped me so much and encouraged me to take bigger steps with my project. I benefited a lot from being in this program and am so grateful that I had and will have Komal to guide me!
We are a lucky family; both of our girls have benefited from MAGIC program. I just have gratitude to all the people who make MAGIC possible, especially the mentors who are punctual, patient, intelligent and great role models for the girls. This program can be challenging and rewarding. It opens doors to new opportunities and helps them discover their true potential. Thank you MAGIC, Thank you Ira!!
This year I had the pleasure of working with MAGIC for the second time. I can definitely say that this program was the highlight to my summer as it allowed me to express my own creative ideas through computer science. My partnership with my mentor Sneha was a great experience and she taught me a lot. Sneha is very talented and made my MAGIC journey so much fun and she helped to make the learning process invigorating. Throughout the process Sneha was very patient and supportive. I was very pleased with my end project which was an app and this could definitely not been done without Sneha or the MAGIC program. I would recommend this program to anyone interested in either STEM or helping change the connotations of women in STEM.

As part of this program, I can definitely see myself grow and be pushed beyond my limits. I was able to explore a new topic while having someone by my side. My mentor was Dhana and she definitely encouraged me to seek challenges. I highly recommend this program to girls looking for a place to find their own way of expressing themselves with technology.
I am currently a 9th grader, and took part in the MAGIC program as a mentee over the summer. The summer session was only about 3 months long, but despite the shorter time period I learned so much. MAGIC focuses on a project you choose, so I decided to create a game with my mentor, Shilpa Gupta. I had no experience with creating a game, and neither did my mentor Shilpa (who is a data scientist), but we learned together. We had to debug our code so many times, but Shilpa was always patient and enthusiastic with me. Our way of communicating was through Google Hangouts and email since we lived far from each other, but at the final presentation for MAGIC I was able to meet my mentor and many other people part of the program in person. Everyone was so nice, and they had so much advice and knowledge to offer just through a conversation. I feel a lot more excited and confident in my journey towards learning more about the STEM field than I did beforehand. It was an experience I am so glad to have, and I hope others will take part in this brilliant program.
My favorite aspect of the MAGIC program is the relationships I have built with my mentees. It's truly rewarding to watch a mentee grow as a coder and scientist throughout the program. The enthusiasm and work ethic I've encountered in my mentees inspires me to do the same.
Our 12-yo daughter took part in this mentorship opportunity and was paired with a very smart and attentive MIT grad student. It was a great experience and we have no hesitation to recommend it to any STEM-curious girl.
MAGIC is one of the most rewarding experiences that I had this year. My Mentor Dr. Hindi Mermelstein and I, developed a clinical research project. Dr. Mermelstein was there for me in every part of my MAGIC journey. From designating an hour a week of her precious time to me, to attending my MAGIC related meetings, I could not have asked for a better mentor.
I was a mentee in the magic program, my mentor, Stephanie and me worked on a solar sensor car that moved based on the amount of light that was detected. Over all this experience helped me improve my knowledge in circuits and coding. I also grew as a person, learning responsibility and determination. Stephanie was a great mentor, she exemplified every quality that a good role model should be. She was assertive, kind, helpful, friendly, and many more. I had a very good time with MAGIC and all of the people that helped me with my project!
My name is Michelle, and this year I was a mentee, and this program was a great experience. My mentor, Ellen, was always very kind and explained confusing things well. My project, a robot arm functioned by an app, was a dream that came true through the MAGIC program. I am grateful to those who organized this program and to my mentor Ellen.
As of now, I am an 8th grader at Rancho Milpitas Middle School. My experience with MAGIC was amazing and extraordinary! My mentor, Iryna, helped me make two awesome programs relating to my main topic, Astronomy. Iryna was always willing to change certain dates of our weekly meeting, due to my schedule. She showed me that programming is everywhere, especially in the Astronomy field. She also showed the many parts of Astronomy, such as studying exoplanets. Ultimately, we were able to create two programs. One for finding the size of exoplanets, and another for creating a Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram based off of a globular cluster studied by the Hubble Space Telescope. Iryna was able to show me my future as an aspiring astrophysicist !
Thank you,
Shreya Nakum (Mentee)
Was a mentor for a 7th grader where we spent time learning programming through Code Academy and hardware through Arduino. We ultimately made a robot arm that was controlled by an Android app written in MIT AppInventor. Over the course of 8 months, I got to share my experiences in STEAM with my mentee and definitely will be keeping in touch with her!
I’m a 10th grader who was a mentee for MAGIC this year, and it has been such an amazing experience! I learned so much from my mentor, Gittie, and was able to complete a project which I would not have thought possible for me in the beginning of the year. My mentor was amazing and patiently answered any questions I had throughout my MAGIC experience this year. She was also very flexible with her schedule and worked together with me to find times to meet. When I started off the year I knew next to nothing about coding, but finished the program with a completed project that incorporated several programming languages and machine learning. I would 100 percent recommend this program to anyone interested in learning more about STEM, and would definitely do it again.
Thank you to MAGIC and my awesome mentor!!
I had a great experience working with the MAGIC staff. They were so helpful and available for anything that came up. They worked with me to set up the program in my school and ensure that it would be successful. We only had one student participate due to mentor availability but more were interested. She had an awesome experience! She loved learning from someone in the industry who was giving her personal attention, focusing on what she was interested in. We hope to participate again next year!
I am the science department chair who coordinated 7 students to work with MAGIC mentors. The experience was outstanding. MAGIC is professionally run, the mentors are dedicated to the students, and they learned a tremendous amount as they developed their individual projects.
As a mentee in this program, I am very grateful that this non-profit exists. I came in with very minimal experience in coding, and was paired with a mentor who was very kind and excited to teach me, and help me work on any project of my choice. Thanks to this nonprofit I got hands-on experience not only with coding with Python but also learning more about a female in the STEM field. The experience helps STEM seem less foreign and I'm now considering a career in computer science. The program itself is also organized very professionally.
We are so grateful for the enriching experience our daughter had as a MAGIC mentee. The program is well organized. We were really impressed with the resources provided and the great job they did matching our daughter with a mentor that fit her interests. You can tell how much the organizers are committed to their mission and really care about each participant.
Proud Dad! I am so grateful to this organization and to my daughters mentor. My daughter has learned so much from this experience and I have seen her grow and mature right before my eyes. The skills that she has learned will no doubt help her succeed in the future.
The experience was very rewarding and fun. It was exciting to see a young girl so excited about tech.
I am a 10th grade student that has been a part of the magic program for the past two years. This was a fantastic opportunity than enabled me to learn beyond the confines of my classroom. I worked on a project consecutively for 2 years, and actually one in award for it in a large science Congress. I have all this to think from MAGIC and my amazing mentor!

I am a 9th-grade student and I was paired with an amazing woman named Dr. Mindy Levine. She is absolutely brilliant and it was such an amazing pleasure to learn from her. We communicated via texting and video chats. Our situation got complicated after Dr. Levine left on Sabbatical to Israel, which is 7 hours ahead. Because of this, we were only able to meet on Sundays so that we would both be awake. This made it hard to contact each other and meet up but we were able to figure it out. We created an amazing chemistry project that connected both chemistry and biology. Since I am in 9th grade and have not taken chemistry yet it was slightly hard to work with a chemist but she was so amazing and helped me through the entire way! This is an amazing program and I am so proud to have participated in it!
MAGIC is an amazing program that helped me to learn all about STEM and begin to imagine my own future in STEM. Dr. Levine was so amazing and helpful through it all, and it was such an amazing experience to work with her.
I recommend the MAGIC program to anyone who is interested in STEM and wants to grow and learn more from amazing people!
Thank you MAGIC for giving me this experience!
I am a currently a 6th grader at GMS and I loved my experience at MAGIC. My amazing mentor Ellen Blaine was always flexible with times and schedules. She had a deep understanding of coding and she showed me that I will be always learning in the world of computers. Ellen was able to show me the world as a female coder and for that, I am forever grateful. After MAGIC I feel very confident and prepared for my Computer Science classes and my potential future as a female coder.
I am currently a 7th grader and I had an amazing experience with the MAGIC program this year. My mentor Juhi was very supportive of me and helped me along my way, she was always there when I had questions and was very polite and flexible when I needed to reschedule meetings and other things. Now that I have done this program I know for a fact that I want to have a career in STEM, and I feel like I can do anything I put my mind to.
I got selected to participate in MAGIC and it has been truly amazing! I learned so much from my amazing mentor Pi-Chuan who taught me so much about coding and STEM. I had so much fun and now have the skills to cntinue prgraming on my own.
My daughter Amrutha attended Magic program on graphic design in aero space engineering structures this year 2019 . I am happy to share my experience that she got an excellent mentor Madhura Limaye who taught her concepts of aero space engineering through the software USU Aero Lab and was always punctual and patient. She was excited to learn to design the wing, vertical stabilizer and many more aspects of the design of a plane and she made a graphic design model of an airplane. She got a better understanding of aerospace design and the logic behind how a plane fly and the requirements an aircraft must have for a safe flight . Overall I recommend magic to everyone and feel lucky my daughter got an opportunity to be part of this program.
Thanks
Manoj
I'm a 6th grader and I loved this program. Despite being the youngest person my mentor had ever mentored, after a couple of sessions I felt very comfortable. She helped me understand so many ideas and techniques. I will definetely look more into the world of STEM after this.
I am a current sixth grader and just completed the MAGIC program. I came in, not knowing almost anything about STEM. My mentor, Adele, taught me the basics of coding, AI, how to right a scientific grant proposal, and much more. I recommend this program because Adele really personalized the program for me and taught me what I wanted to learn about.
Coming from a mentee's perspective, it was a wonderful experience and I really grew a bond with my mentor. We worked together throughout the process, so it wasn't exactly a teacher-student relationship, but more of a friendship. I definitely conquered concepts I felt were a little daunting at first, but the program helped me learn all of it at a good pace so I never felt bored or rushed. This gave me a sort of push into the STEM world, and I'm more than motivated to continue my project and explore other concepts during the summer. I absolutely would recommend this to anybody who is thinking about applying!
I'm so glad I got to participate in MAGIC! As a freshman in high school, I've been exploring different interests and MAGIC helped me become even more passionate about technology. My awesome mentor, Catherine, who works in the Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence field, helped me with pursuing my interest in ML. The MAGIC program is a great opportunity for girls to get exposure to technology, and learn that they are very capable of going into STEM and doing whatever they dream of!
Our daughter really enjoyed participating in the MAGIC program. She felt lucky to be a part of it. Her mentor is a current college student at the University of Pennsylvania, and she was inspiring, helpful, enthusiastic, intelligent, and genuinely cared about helping Alexa succeed. Adele helped Alexa with her communication and time management skills. They also brainstormed worthwhile ideas together of what Alexa could pursue for her project. Alexa identified a need and attempted to fill with with the support of her mentor. Alexa learned to write a grant and developed the ideas and layout for a future web site that will help senior citizens to navigate the Internet. Alexa came up with ways to make accessing the Internet - music, social network sites, games, etc.-- easier and more accessible for those seniors who are less tech savvy.
MAGIC program inspired my daughter to learn programming. The MAGIC program mentor asked my daughter about her interests and when she learnt it was drumming, they came up with an idea to combine drums and computer programming. The result was an application where a user can compose music, record it and play it back. Thank you MAGIC program for helping my daughter see technology in a different light. In her words, "With coding, you can create something out of nothing!" Thank you Ira, Dr. Arnberg , Neelam and the MAGIC Team. Forever grateful - Komal
Our daughter participated in this program and had an amazing experience. Being matched with a female mentor is a wonderful opportunity for a school-age girl and has the potential to make a positive impact in both of their lives. We are certain that our daughter learned a lot from this program and gained an important role model in her mentor.
MAGIC is a fantastic organization that makes a huge impact in people's lives. I am a senior in high school and last summer I was mentored by Shruthi Basireddy, an ambitious, hardworking, dedicated senior at the University of Chicago. Through weekly Skype meetings, she helped me research the neuroscience of pregnancy and instructed me about how to write a scientific literature review. In addition to my MAGIC project, Shruthi and I also talked about her college experience and career paths for women in STEM. She was also insightful and willing to help or guide me whenever I needed it, so I am incredibly grateful to have formed a bond with her over the summer. The MAGIC program in general is very well-run, with periodic check-in surveys or meetings to track the progress of our projects. Its mission to empower women in STEM is a noble one, and moreover the execution is excellent. I think the most valuable aspect of MAGIC is how its mentors get to understand STEM career paths and the daily lives of women in STEM fields, because these realities often seem vague and murky to high school students. My experience was nothing short of fantastic and I am incredibly grateful for Shruthi and for MAGIC!
Our daughter participated in the MAGIC program through her school. It appealed to her because she thought it would be a fun way to do some hands-on fun stuff in STEM with help from a mentor. It ended up being so much more. Her mentor, Cher Shedd, was out of this world! Our daughter has dreamed of building a roller coaster, and while that seemed a little outside the box, Cher embraced it and helped her learn about the physics behind roller coasters and the concepts of energy and momentum. She built the roller coaster with Cher's help, and then Cher extended my daughter's learning by having her build a website that was about building the roller coaster. Cher taught our daughter about more than STEM concepts and skills though - she was and is an amazing role model for our daughter. MAGIC was a great experience!
I was a volunteer mentor for the MAGIC program for the summer of 2018. This was my first time volunteering with GetMagic Corporation. I enjoyed the experience immensely and will recommend it to anyone who is interested. My mentee and I built a game in Python and she got the opportunity to learn basic programming concepts while applying them too.
I participated in MAGIC about five years back (as a sixth grader), and MAGIC was instrumental in keeping me interested in coding. Recently I've been more aware of the lack of diversity in tech, and I’m so happy that MAGIC was around to foster my love of coding when I otherwise might have been discouraged. Since MAGIC, I’ve published multiple apps, including Readlio.com and Mere, which won the 2017 Congressional App Challenge. Thank you so much for doing what you’re doing!
Sandra Harimoto was Akshaya's mentor in MAGIC program. She spent couple of hours every week with Akshaya for the last 9 months teaching her software programming. Her guidance helped Akshaya to learn software languages and also boosted her interest in the STEM field. Thank you Sandra.
We traveled to San Jose for the final presentation event at The Tech Museum from the East Coast. Thank you MAGIC for arranging this event at a place that grabs the interest in technology. We met Ira Pramanick at the event, she was very courteous. I wish MAGIC team all the very best for their tremendous help to the community. I am a very proud parent of a MAGIC mentee.
Before getting started with the MAGIC program, I was always really interested in computing and STEM, but I never really knew how to get started. With the help of MAGIC and my mentor, Sandra Harimoto, I learned about many different resources I could use to develop a greater understanding in different computing languages. This really helped me learn how to incorporate all these different languages into ideas to solve problems. This wonderful experience helped me visualize how I could use STEM to solve ongoing problems around me and helped me realize that this would be an amazing career for me in the future.
My mentor, Sandra Harimoto, was a great influence. She is a standing symbol of what I could be, or do in the future with a career in STEM. She helped guide me through the experience understanding my interests. Most of all, she was always there, always open to answering questions at any time, always patient with me during times of difficulty, and always ready to meet with me every Sunday for several hours. This leaves me very thankful for the MAGIC, and how it has helped me greatly. I would greatly thank my mentor, Sandra Harimoto, and Ira Pramanick for giving me such a wonderful opportunity, and I would definitely recommend MAGIC to girls interested in STEM.
MAGIC was so helpful to me. I learned so much through the program. At the beginning I had no experience in coding and now I have a good understanding. My mentor Neelam was so nice and patient with me as she went step by step through the code and the understanding of Java. I enjoyed MAGIC a lot and recommend it to girls who would like to code or would like to work with computers
Madison 8th grader
As a magic mentee, I could not have imagined the extent that this program would change the way I view careers in STEM fields, especially computer science. Before I joined this program, I was intimidated by programming because most of the coding clubs and classes in my school where very advanced, but there wasn't a good place to learn how to code. MAGIC showed me how programming can be used to enhance work in fields other than computer science, and my mentor taught me so much to show me that a career in STEM is attainable and full of opportunities
Laney S. was Mary Grace (Gracie) Murray's mentor from Tufts University. The MAGIC program was a fabulous opportunity for a young woman going into her High School Senior year and later onto college. Laney was an awesome mentor for Gracie. My granddaughter looked forward to their weekly communications and I was politely "informed" what time Gracie had to be available for their correspondences. Laney was a perfect fit for my shy, quiet Mary Grace, to work with and be a mentee. Laney knew her subject matter well and I was later told Gracie was very enthusiastic and was not so shy and quiet! Gracie, her mom and I thank Laney so much for her time and talents! What a wonderful opportunity and experience you all made possible for Gracie!
Ira Pramanick was beyond wonderful! She gave me helpful information on locations and accommodations. She was prompt in returning my emails and answering my many questions, even though she was unbelievably busy herself! She was traveling across the country and world it seemed, while having to put up with a "Gamma" that was computer lame, me! Thank you all!

I really enjoyed being a part of MAGIC. It was both fun and challenging, and I can't wait to use the skills I learned from this program and apply it to other activities. My mentor Deepa Mohan was amazing. She let me go at my own pace, and was always there to help me, for which I am forever grateful for. All in all, I think MAGIC is an amazing program, and I hope that a lot of people apply for MAGIC next year.
As a MAGIC mentor, I love introducing girls to the world of engineering and helping them put all the concepts they are learning together to make something cool. There's nothing like seeing a student's awe at your work, realizing they hold a belief that a similar career is inaccessible to them, and then helping them realize that they can in fact do anything they want by mentoring them through their own hands-on project.
My MAGIC experience was amazing! I learned so much! I came into MAGIC with no coding background and with the help of my mentor I was able to learn the fundamentals of the programming language Python and the basics of machine learning. Now I am much more excited about STEM. MAGIC was an empowering experience for me that help me realize how important it is for girls to know how to code. My mentor Falguni Jhaveri supported me all throughout this process. She helped me overcome challenges such as debugging dense code and answering difficult questions. MAGIC is an amazing non-profit that I am so excited to have been a part of.
My name is Mia, and I am a tenth grader at Deep Run High School. My mentor was Mrs. Kalkunte, and she is hands down the greatest mentor I have ever had. She made me realize that a career in STEM is possible for me, and taught me so much about computer science. My experience was truly MAGICal, pun intended. Mrs. Kalkunte took the time to meet me face to face every week and we worked for an hour, although there were times where we worked for even longer. In those meetings, I would debug and ask for help on my programs. That time also allowed me to talk about my day with Mrs. Kalkunte, and form a close relationship. This is a truly amazing program and I will reflect upon this past year with a lot affection.
I am an eighth grader that goes to Thomas Russell Middle School. To me MAGIC has taught me to learn how to speak up for what you think even though what you speak is sometimes the wrong response. This program has taught me the confidence that I did not have during the beginning of this program. When I started this program I was very shy and could not speak in front of others or as known as public speaking but my mentor helped me get the confidence I have now. My mentor was Mrs. Shami. She is a wonderful and helpful person. She taught me how to make algorithms and how to code a game that I have made on scratch.
My game is a trivia about the brain. I have chose the topic of the brain because I want to become a psychologist in the future. As I said earlier I made my game on scratch. I started with making a simple algorithm about how I wanted the game to look like and how the game was going to work. Then I started to make the actual game.
This experience has taught me about many habits that can help me in the future and towards my career. For example to do your work on time and always be patient because not everything is going to go your way and also to ask for help even when you have the tiniest of confusions.
Overall I think MAGIC was a great experience and thank you MAGIC for teaching me the habits and the confidence to speak up.
I am a 6th grader and I had such a fun time with my mentor, Hema. This was a great experience and I will definitely continue to learn and practice STEM. If I had the chance I would do this program again. My mentor was so supportive of me and we will stay in touch. MAGIC helped me learn all about STEM and created forever lasting friendships. I recommend MAGIC to anyone who wants to learn more about STEM! Thank you MAGIC!
I mentored a 6th grader via video chat and screen share in creating apps with MIT AppInventor. We both had a tremendous amount of fun. My mentee learned a lot and was able to make some fairly sophisticated apps using the simple drag and drop interface. I would highly recommend becoming a mentor. The program was well organized. I received guidance and instruction the whole way through.
I've have 4 mentees through getMagic, but this year was my first high schooler, and I loved it! It's always fun to code with the kids, but my high schooler was also in the time in her life when she was thinking about colleges, majors, and careers. Those conversations - what she's thinking about, and what advice and experience I could offer, have been the coolest part of the experience for me!

I loved mentoring with GetMagic! I was matched with an excited middle schooler, and we really clicked, which made it easy to help her with her project. I was impressed at how outgoing and creative my mentee was, and she was willing to try anything. She clearly hadn't yet hit the point where she was self conscious about herself or her abilities, and I am optimistic that she will at least consider a career in a STEM field when the time is right. I believe that this program is an excellent way to expose girls to STEM fields in a personalized and interactive way. As they complete their projects, they get to know a woman who made a career out of the subjects they are studying, which seems to be extra encouraging. I think this is an excellent opportunity for girls, and it's an experience I wish I had as a middle/high schooler. I can't wait to mentor with GetMagic again!
I had a really really great time with MAGIC! My mentor was Michelle, and I attempted to build a magnetically levitating model car. Michelle helped me by checking in every week, and giving great insight. I learned so much because of MAGIC!
MAGIC is an amazing program that provides one-on-one mentoring in any STEM field the mentee chooses. You can choose one large project or a few smaller ones - you can do whatever you want! I loved this program because I was able to learn a lot specifically about C++, and also general strategies of organizing/making code. There is so much freedom for the mentees(as mentioned before) and there is so much care put into the process of matching mentors and mentees. Overall, this program is a great experience and a great way for girls to enter the STEM field with experience and confidence.
Magic was such a fun learning experience for me, and my mentor, Smriti, was amazing! I learned so much, and I hope that many more learn all of the stuff magic taught. From coding to being a leader, thank you Magic!
This program is a great way to encourage young women to pursue STEM-related fields and to build a strong relationship with a student.
MAGIC gives girls an inspiring and nurturing way to get involved in STEM by pairing them with mentors who show them the ropes and demystify the field. The magic of MAGIC is that they start early, when girls can still make choices about what they want their future to look like. Girls know that anything is within their reach and are empowered to start paths they would never have imagined before!
Awesome program! My daughter was paired with a super-impressive mentor at MIT. Everything I expected from the program, from the amount of interaction to the quality of the summer project, met or exceeded my expectations.
Through GETMagic, I was paired up with a mentor that taught me how to code in HTML, CSS, and Java, which is something that I never would have had the experience to do outside of GETMagic. I really enjoyed being able to visit the Google campus and meeting so many incredible women, from my own mentor to several other ones. Each of them were all very unique and talented individuals that I enjoyed talking to and working with and if I had a chance to do this program again, I absolutely would.
I mentored with MAGIC for the first time this year and had a great experience. The entire MAGIC team and other mentors were very supportive of both the mentees and each other. I was so happy to see MAGIC provide opportunities for young girls to explore stimulating projects in STEM that they themselves were passionate about. I would definitely recommend MAGIC to any middle or high school girls interested in STEM!
I have been volunteering for MAGIC since 2008. Every year I'm still learning something new from my mentees and all the other MAGIC mentors, and it has been really fun!
I got involved in GetMAGIC through introduction from a friend. The objective of helping young women in STEM was very interesting to me. After spending almost 6 months as a mentor, I must say that I am extremely delighted to be involved with GetMAGIC. Mentoring these young minds is a rewarding experience, as you learn so much in the process. This organization is very well run and extremely organized. I highly recommend Getmagic !
MAGIC is a very well organized effort at bringing the magic of STEM to more and more girls via 1-1 mentoring. I got to be a MAGIC mentor to two awesome girls over the past two years. It's such an incredible feeling to watch your mentees learn, work through challenges, and complete a project in their area of interest.
I am sure that the experience and industry connections that the mentees acquire via MAGIC will be a great asset to them over the years. I also like it that MAGIC provides a platform for mentors like me to network with like-minded professionals.
MAGIC was such an incredible opportunity that allowed girls like me become interested in a STEM field! I was also very lucky to get such amazing mentors like Jen and Uma. They guided me every step of the way from the initial idea to the final product. Having a woman mentor made a huge difference as I could relate and connect even better. In learning their backgrounds and stories, I was inspired that women could work on such amazing projects in their professional career. I went from knowing nothing about coding to building a functioning IOS/Android app. Jen was such a kind and patient mentor who taught me so much and helped troubleshoot and overcome challenges. MAGIC is able to find inspiring women mentors, who volunteer their personal time to help the girls with their projects. I discussed some possible project ideas and very quickly knew what I want to do and then we spent 1 on 1 time over 6 months to bring my app idea to reality. Because of MAGIC, I made new friends, got interested in a STEM career, and developed an app that I plan to continue building. In addition, my little sister (9 years) got interested in coding as well and started Scratch programming all by herself. I want to thank MAGIC and Jen for such a memorable experience.
This was my second time mentoring with MAGIC and it was such a gratifying experience! My mentee, Siya, knew more about HTML, CSS and Javascript than I did, so learning from her and teaching her to organize her brilliant ideas into small chunks of work that she could develop and debug the issues we ran into made for an overall fun experience. The program is very well coordinated and the board supports both the mentors and mentees so they can make the most of the mentoring relationship.
My experience with MAGIC was truly incredible and memorable. My mentor, Hema, was so kind and helpful throughout the entire process. With her guidance, I found the motivation and the passion to pursue a tricky machine learning project. She provided the resources and the support to make my project extremely successful. The one-on-one female mentorship was also something so unique and so valuable, and I definitely could not be where I am today without the help of my mentor and the wonderful opportunities that MAGIC provided.
My daughter wasn't into computer programming at all until last year. Then she decided to try out comp science as one of the subjects in this academic year, when we found out about MAGIC through one of my colleagues. Even though we started a bit late, it has made a world of difference! She is very interested in technology now, in fact she comes up with new ideas almost every day :-) MAGIC has indeed done magic ! Thank you very much to the mentors, organizers and volunteers for all the positive experience and influence that your program has been providing. I had the opportunity to attend the presentations at Google by some of the girls - its a truly amazing experience to see all the creativity flowing.
I mentored an amazing 8th grade student from January to May. Magic is such a well-organized group, which provides significant assistance to mentors via monthly meetings and a supportive network of mentors. My mentee and I were both interested in biology and genetics, so we chose projects in those fields. We decided on a set of projects that aligned with my mentees other interests too, focusing on the theme of super bugs. After some background research, my mentee drove the project by designing a grade level experiment to see how many people could be infected by an imaginary bacteria AND filmed and produced a public service announcement on the topic. Great experience!
I am from the program Magic and I worked with Priscilla Pham which is the Co-founder of Math Papa. With Priscilla I worked to make a Pet website. Whenever I didn't understand something she would always reference the concept to something else that was more in my vocabulary. Priscilla is very nice and she is a brilliant coder. Without Priscilla I wouldn't have been able to do it.
I think MAGIC is a great program for the youth go want to get involved with STEM related activities and it's an opportunity for them to expand their knowledge and skills in that area. I'm glad that I was able to be part of MAGIC because they offer you help that you need to take advantage of in order to gain as much new knowledge as possible. It's great that they can recruit mentors to be that source of help for the children who are part of that program and I was lucky enough to get an extremely caring and helpful mentor, Ellen Blaine. Overall, I had a great time joining MAGIC and I would recommend it to others.
I have loved my experience with MAGIC! My mentor, Akhila, was the most wonderful and patient teacher I could ask for. She taught me how to code in Python, and was at my side throughout the entire project. I know that she was very busy, and I am so grateful for the time that she took out of her schedule to help me. Overall, I have had an incredible experience and would highly recommend MAGIC to anyone who is interested in learning more about the STEM field!
I did MAGIC in seventh grade, and it was an amazing experience! My mentor Smriti was so kind and helpful, and I'm so glad I got to work with her. She helped me through the entire project, and taught me Swift in less than a year. Overall, MAGIC was an amazing experience and I would highly recommend it to everyone!
My 8th grade daughter joined the MAGIC program this past spring. Her mentor Ira who is a woman engineer at Google. Ira was a wonderful and dedicated mentor. Despite her busy schedule, she made herself available to answer my daughter’s questions. She replied emails in a timely manner and she sometimes sent out emails in midnight. Ira even spent extra time to help my daughter ensuring she could finish her project on time. She invited my daughter to her house to help debugging the program when my daughter got stuck. Ira not only taught my daughter programming skill, but most importantly, she has also made herself a role model for my daughter.
There is a final presentation at the end of each term. On the day of presentation, MAGIC organized the girls to tour the Google campus and invited the girls having a lunch there. That was a fun day for the girls. The presentations were incredibly successful. It was amazed to see so much progress they had achieved. I certainly recommend the MAGIC program! We appreciate everyone at MAGIC for providing such a wonderful program to young girls who are willing to learn more about STEM.
My daughter had great experience being part of Magic mentoring program! Her mentor, Becky, is incredibly talented and passionately worked with Sruthi! She introduced Python and taught her how to create games using Python. My daughter always eagerly waited for their weekly session and truly enjoyed working with Becky, Thanks a lot to Magic for providing such great opportunity!
It was an exciting experience to see the MAGIC in my daughter's growth and her sense of empowerment. These experiences served as a foundation into Computer Science and into a world of possibilities. The Magic program brought together the ability to solve complex problems using a programmatic approach.
Namitha Benjamin, my daughter's mentor, is an extremely intelligent woman that was her coach and friend. Namitha is patient, caring, and very dedicated to helping students evolve in their full potential.
I highly recommend Magic, and Namitha, to new students that are interested in learning about computer science. There is no challenge this wonderful program can't help solve for motivated students.
Our 7th grade daughter was a Magic mentee last year. Her mentor Smriti who is a student at MIT, was a spectacular mentor. Our daughter would look forward to their weekly Skype sessions. The interactions were always very thoughtful and positive. Smriti made our daughter feel confident in her abilities and explained complex ideas in such a way that our daughter never felt intimidated, but was actually excited to learn. Smriti made learning Xcode fun for a 12 year old. How cool is that? We are hoping that the girls will stay in touch and that Smriti will remain her mentor for a long time to come. We are thankful to Magic for providing such an amazing role model for our daughter.
MAGIC was one of the best experiences I have ever had. MAGIC is an organization that is geared towards helping girls gain experience in STEM. Mentees are assigned to a specific mentor, who will help the mentee figure out what she wants to do for her project, which is presented at the end of each session.
Starting the program, I had very limited knowledge about computer programming. However, after 3 months, I was able to write an entire hangman game in python, which was the programming language I chose to write in. This was all possible because of the encouragement and support of my mentor.
I would definitely recommend this program because I learned so much about programming in those 3 months than I would have if I had just decided to take a class instead.
My experience with MAGIC was more than I could have imagined. Having the opportunity to partipate and collaborate with a mentor who works in STEM was exciting and gave me insight into what persuing a career in Computer Science could be like. This is an amazing program to join if you're a high school aged girl.
A catalytic platform for young girls, intending to pursue a career in STEM.
I was amazed by this volunteer driven 'pay- it-forward notion driven ' platform created by accomplished women professionals from the field of STEM .
The Program Principal structured my daughter's project keeping into mind, her areas of interest ( coupled with a demanding high school schedule) while, matching it with available Mentor skill sets.My daughter's mentors were very accomplished young STEM professionals. They were a constant source of motivation for her, during her year long project development phase till completion . As my daughter went about developing her project, their regular and focused interactions helped her reinforce various aspects of time, task and goal management.
I wish everyone associated with Get Magic all the very best . Finally, here's hoping that this catalyst, fuels more changes in the coming years.
Hi, I am Diana, and I am a rising junior in high school!
The MAGIC program was beyond my expectations in terms of what I have gained from it.
As a first time mentee and as someone who knew nothing about Computer Science, not knowing what she was getting herself into, it was one of the best experiences I ever had. This program is open to anyone of any level of knowledge, as well as anyone of personality or any of that matter. You learn so much from your mentor, and you create a very strong bond and network. MAGIC promotes confidence and empowerment in the STEM field for women. Personally, I thought that I gained a lot of social skills on how to collaborate with one another, which is really important! My Mentor, Roshni, was very open-minded, and she was my guidance who helped me find a place to start, which was Computer Software. Overall, the program is open to anyone, and it will definitely make an impact on your STEM dreams/career.
Magic was an excellent experience for my younger sister who is a rising senior in high school. Programs like Magic give young girls a chance to form relationships with women in the field of STEM, which is so crucial.
Allowing my younger sister to join this program has been such a privilege. Not only did she learn more about coding, but the program got her to think about her future in a more concrete way.
I thank everyone at MAGIC for providing such a vital program to young girls.
I loved working on my project with my mentor Neetu. She was very helpful to me and I learned everything I needed to know to complete my project.
As a mentee in this project, I found it extremely helpful to be able to have someone to reach out to and ask for help. Namitha Benjamin, my tutor, was very patient with me. When I did not understand something, she would go straight to the whiteboard and starts explaining it to me immediately. I felt really comfortable to just send my tutor an email knowing that she would respond. I wanted to learn python because my father was doing python, and the way he described what he does fascinated me. Apart from my main project, I worked on a lot of smaller programs, such as programs that passed variables to functions, created lists, created arrays, received input from the user, and all these programs helped me understand programming concepts. The main project was inspired by my love of trivia games and my new love of coding.
As a rising Junior in high school, I cannot express how honored I am to have experienced this amazing program. MAGIC doesn't only promote learning about programming and tech-related activities, but also bonds between women in STEM work forces along with the next generation of STEM minds. MAGIC paired me to my two mentors Jaelle and Soja-Marie. They have honestly given me so much guidance over these two years. Jaelle and I worked on Cloud9 for my project last summer while, Soja worked with me all throughout the year. MAGIC taught me many languages but most importantly introduced me to so many amazing ladies in STEM! I highly recommend MAGIC to any girl with even a minuscule passion for STEM and willingness to learn.

MAGIC is a great program for girls who want to pursue a career in STEM or are even thinking about it. I started the summer mentorship between my freshman and sophomore year and I am proud to say that it was definitely worth my time. My mentor, Jaelle Scheuerman, is an amazing person and mentor. She's really easy to work with and is always optimistic even when things aren't working out. My project was to make an app with her and I feel like I accomplished a lot because I learned some new programming languages and I was able to actually see them work. Jaelle is also a great mentor because she makes sure you understand the concepts before you apply them so, it provides a great, interactive working environment. Overall, I would for sure recommend MAGIC for any girl who is willing to spend their time learning about the STEM field and just to have fun!
I love mentoring my mentee and learned a lot in the process.
Magic also helped me meet my remote mentee which was a great experience.

The MAGIC corporation was very helpful for me. Personally, in MAGIC the part I enjoyed the most was giving our presentations on our final projects. I enjoyed this the most about the program because it helped me with my public speaking skills and it gave me the opportunity to be able to educate others the way the program educated me.
Magic is a wonderful program. I was a mentee in the program and I was able to learn new things, and also learn more about the subject I wanted to work in. I suggest Magic to other women that are looking for something to help them through their dream career.
I had another great year with MAGIC mentoring my mentee Morgan. It was amazing learning 3D animation together and get to model a living room. I am so grateful to MAGIC for the positive impact it is making to the mentee by offering the 1-1 mentoring which is not easy to get.
Thanks MAGIC
My 8th grade daughter participated in the MAGIC program through the Girls Middle School. She felt empowered and supported by the program. She embraced her relationship with her mentor who provided patience and guidance. She had a great experience developing her project through trial and error. I whole heartedly recommend this worthwhile corporation and its positive impact on young women.
I found out about MAGIC during my junior year of high school, and was matched with my wonderful mentor, Susanne Glissmann. At the time, I was sure I wanted to pursue a career in tech, but wasn't sure exactly what sector to go into. Susanne was more than accommodating and introduced me to industry experts in Computer Science and Bioengineering. I got to learn more about what she did as a researcher at IBM, and even toured the office! I left the program feeling confident about my decision to pursue STEM, and stronger after meeting so many powerful women who shared their stories of success in the industry with me.
I actually was quite stubborn about pursuing biomedical engineering, but after seeing the strength of women in the computer science community in both MAGIC and college, I decided to pursue my degree in Computer Science at UC Berkeley. Throughout college I've come in contact with other women who have mentored for MAGIC, and have been on the receiving end of their wonderful guidance. I'm very lucky to be joining these women in industry now as a Software Engineer at Google! Thank you thank you thank you!
Magic has been a wonderful partnership for our school, not only for encouraging students to take on a self directed deep dive into computer science but for also demonstrating the power of mentorship. It was rewarding to see quiet students be able to present their final projects with such confidence and poise and demonstrate all that they learned throughout the project. The overall organization of the program was very accessible and well organized from the application process to check-in and also final presentations. I look forward to continuing to work with them and be able to inspire many more students.
I am a first time mentor with this organization and my first run with it has been an amazing process. I learned a lot along the way and genuinely had so much fun collaborating with my mentee. She was a curious girl who made me laugh, but also taught me the value of patience and how to be "cool".
GetMagic is one of those organizations out there that makes you realize how much you can do to change the world instead of being a passive supporter.
The MAGIC program really helped my daughter further her knowledge in the STEM field. Working with a mentor really helped her understanding and growth in engeneering and programming.
Great job MAGIC!
I've been volunteering with MAGIC for almost 5 years now, and it's been a great experience for me as a STEM professional. I've volunteered at science fairs, classes, and other one-day events, but I was looking for something with a little more depth as well as flexibility(scheduling a one-off or all-day event can be hit or miss) - MAGIC is it! It's like being a Big Sister but for STEM, and I love it! I'm not a computer scientist, but MAGIC has found mentees looking for projects in unique areas where I can contribute at least a little bit to their knowledge, and we've been able to meet remotely which makes it much easier to coordinate and fit into my schedule. I have found it both challenging and rewarding to guide these girls through learning about new areas in STEM.
Participating in the MAGIC program helped me to further my interest in computer science and make having a job in a STEM field a likely option for me in the future. My mentor was patient with me when I had trouble understanding the concepts that she was trying to teach me and provided detailed and helpful answers to my questions. I got to learn more about Python, HTML, and CSS, and I also got to try Javascript. Doing MAGIC was honestly one of the greatest, most rewarding things I've done, and I looking forward to learning more about computer science in the future.
MAGIC provided me with an amazing learning experience. Not only was I able to explore 3-D modeling, a subject I have always been interested in, I was paired up with an understanding and resourceful mentor who helped me with my project and even took me on a tour of her office, so I could learn about the real-life applications of what I was learning about. Overall, I really loved my MAGIC experience, and if I could, I would definitely do it again!
MAGIC was a really interesting program that helped me learn more about a topic I'm interested in, artificial intelligence. I created a chatbot! I don't think I would've been able to do it without the help of my fantastic mentor.
I did this for school and it will stay with me for ever. I really enjoyed the one on one experience with my mentor and being able choose what to do in any STEM field I wanted. I learned a lot of important skills in programming.
My mentor was really nice and supportive. She was very helpful and knew what she was doing. She was also very friendly and fun to work with.
If I could change something about this program it would be to make the mentorship longer. I did this for one year and I would totally continue doing it for longer if I had the chance.
Congratulations on a job very well done to all mentees and mentors!
Presentations are unbelievably good it is amazing how much progress they made in an year. It is good to see creativity & innovation in the projects these girls have exhibited in their projects with the help of mentors.
Thankyou so much for Ira & co for providing such an amazing experience for my daughter MAGIC did magic on my daughter and turned her thought process. She was a bit shy and hesitatnt about the program in the beginning but with Bobbys amazing mentoring she turned herself into completely a different girl.
She had a very good time working with Bobby through out the year. Bobby is very patient, brilliant, encouraging and hardworking mentor we can't ask anything more from her. We hope to have Bobby as her mentor next year as well. Thankyou Bobby for putting yourself into the program to help our daughter. We all really appreciate it.
Thankyou for Aparna, Deepa and all for coordinating today's presentations they were pretty smooth and we all had a really good time in presentations, dinner and chatting with you all. We came to know more and get connected with mentors and other like minded parents. Hope to keep in touch with you all and see you again next year.
I was a mentor with MAGIC program and was fortunate to mentor a determined, driven and hard working middle-schooler. She chose a challenging goal in 3D modeling and animation. Along with learning the tools and basics of 3d modeling and texturing I was also able to work with her in getting real world exposure to entertainment industry and asset pipeline.
I am excited to be part of MAGIC that provides an incredible opportunity for girls to go deep in their areas of interest. It's very rewarding to see the out-of-the-box thinking of this generation and heights that they are set to climb.
MAGIC has offered my daughter a wonderful experience this year. She's worked over Skype with a mentor in New Orleans to build a chatbot in CoffeeScript, an ambitious but achievable project through which she learned a great deal. Her mentor was excellent and offered my daughter the chance to collaborate with a woman already making her way with success in the world of technology - a precious thing in a field that too many young women still feel unwelcome from joining.
Thanks so much for all your efforts to engage more girls in STEM! It is admirable what your organization is able to do for the girls and how valuable it is for their future! We are so grateful!
My middle school daughter had a fantastic time learning and was able to go deep into the topic of superconductivity with her mentor and learn more than she expected! Especially for introverted girls having the one on one mentoring really makes a difference! She was able to ask all her questions and have very good discussions with her mentor on all types of science. It was a real gift and she was lucky to have this opportunity!
I was a MAGIC mentor this year and enjoyed the entire experience. The mentees had really impressive projects and it was awesome to see them so excited and engaged at such a young age!
Since I have been involved with the Getmagic program, I have understood and implemented the fundamentals of python, engineered with Raspberry Pi and learned about topics such as the Internet of Things. Additionally, I have become more passionate about advocating girls in STEAM. I thank Magic and my mentor for helping me further my learning about technology and reminding me that it is our future.
I had the wonderful opportunity of being a mentee with MAGIC when I was in 7th grade. Now, almost 7 years later, I have returned to the nonprofit as a mentor. My experience as a mentee was truly amazing - it instilled in me a passion for computer science, and now I am pursuing a degree in computer science at MIT. I only hope to do the same for my mentee! MAGIC provides the perfect opportunities for girls to discover their passions and explore fields and projects they may not have access to in school/in their daily lives. I am so proud to be a part of this fantastic nonprofit! As a mentor, I have also seen the insides of how MAGIC functions, and I am really impressed with the organization and leadership behind the nonprofit. I feel like I have joined a community of amazing, inspiring women (mentors, mentees, and board members alike) and cannot wait to see MAGIC grow!
Through MAGIC , I was able to deepen my knowledge of computer science, specifically website design, and gain confidence in pursuing a career related to computer programming. My mentor Catherine Wah was extremely helpful and made the mentorship a great experience.
I really enjoyed being a part of the MAGIC program this year because it exposed me to new things and has gotten me motivated to try and learn more programming in my near future. Working in the MAGIC program has been a terrific experience for me and as a result have one foot in the door for STEM.
MAGIC enabled me to explore computer science with resources I never had access to before. They connected me with a mentor, Soja who not only gave me advice on computer science, but also on college and careers. She took time out of her busy schedule to meet with me every week to help me. They also funded my project with involved iPhone apps and robots which would have been too costly for me to afford.
Mentoring for magic was fantastic! It was great to help my mentee learn, and it was an amazing opportunity to learn how to teach!
Volunteering for MAGIC as a mentor was a very rewarding experience. MAGIC matched me with such an amazing student. She was always eager learn and listened to everything I wanted to teach her. What intrigued me the most was how hard she was working. She attended high school, attended college classes, and was also a volunteer herself, however, she still made time to work on her project when she was not busy with her everyday life. At first, choosing a project seemed to be an impossible choice to make, but when stated that programming/coding does not just need to be visually appealing, but should be used in combination with your passion, she had the best idea. She wanted to make an informative website regarding human trafficking. As soon as she told me her idea, I knew that she had seen computer science in a different way. No longer did it seem like a difficult topic to conquer, but a very interesting topic to learn, which she found to be a way she can make a difference in the world, through educating the public about a subject people turn their faces to. She no longer was intimidated with coding.
I really enjoyed being her mentor, and a mentor for MAGIC, where a difference can be made in each students' lives' as well as a difference in the world.
I came into MAGIC not knowing anything at all. I was curious about Computer Science and this program has made me realize how fun it is and I recommend it to anyone wanting to pursue a career in CS or STEM or is just even the slightest bit curious. This program without a doubt was one of the best decisions I have ever made. My mentor not only taught me how to code and create a website about something I am passionate about, but she became a friend and someone who I could turn to with any questions about anything, from school to career advice. Join and you will not regret it!
This mentor program was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I learned so much about Java, thanks to Tanya Gupta and she helped remove all my doubts about majoring in CS.
MAGIC was absolutely a wonderful experience for me. If you're interested in learning about tech and STEM for girls, MAGIC provides one on one mentoring with women who work in the tech industry. You can learn more about or even pursue an idea you have for a project. In my case, my interest in tech had just sparked, so I was looking for a introduction to the different topics. My mentor and I met weekly, covering many topics, including coding in python and working with an arduino. The program has helped me discover my interests and has given me support and guidance.
Awesome and life changing program, MAGIC needs ten stars! MAGIC has opened up amazing opportunities and helped me gain insight into the STEM field.
I found MAGIC through the internet, the selection process was highly personalized and as a result me and my mentor, Pi-Chuan Chang, worked very well together. She was a good listener, very supportive and was completely open to working on what ever project I wanted. Her teaching style was very heuristic, perfect as I like educational freedom and discovery. I leaned a lot about engineering, programming and math. The best part was being able to visit the campuses of Google, Facebook and LinkedIn. I spent the whole day in Mountain View meeting engineers from each of the companies.
As a girl who has participated in a lot of STEM outreach programs, MAGIC is by far my favorite. With the deep personalized of the program it was always engaging and all the women I met were very inspiring. The technical knowledge you gain in only the beginning. My mentor gave me lots of advice for college and introduced me to different engineering careers in tech.
I've always had a love for STEM, especially tech. But when I'd tell people I wanted to be a computer scientist my friends and even strangers would tell me, "Wow that's going to be hard, not a lot of women are in the field." or "Good Luck!" The media too does nothing but give this impression that as a girl your going to be an outsider, that you're an "other". After MAGIC, I've met so many women who completely dispel that myth . I've received nothing but support and encouragement from MAGIC and the women I've met. There might be a small number of women in tech but they stand in solidarity and strength.
I'd recommend MAGIC to any girl, you won't be disappointed.
Amazing experience! My daughter new nothing about Computer Science and now she is thinking about a career in that field. This is a very professional and well organized program.
This organization gave me such an amazing opportunity- and I am glad I took it. My mentor was great at helping me with all my problems and really helped me learn at a great pace. At the end all my work culminated into an amazing application that I could have never made without the help of my mentor. A definite recommendation for anyone willing to learn!
I had a blast working with my mentee! She was so enthusiastic, which made our time working together lots of fun! I think she got a lot out of the experience, and I am looking forward to mentoring again someday!
My mentee was not only funny, but extremely helpful!! We had lots of fun together, and
I had a blast.

I enjoyed being a Magic Mentee and my mentor was very enthusiastic and overall this program was amazing!
Through my experiences at MAGIC, I was able to be introduced to neurology and understand basic concepts I hadn't thought about before. I applied my knowledge to a project describing the uses of different brain parts. MAGIC is a great way to learn more about STEM fields and I recommend it to anyone with interest in those fields.
I have volunteered with MAGIC as a mentor for the past two years since graduating from university and it has been one of the most rewarding experiences that I have had. MAGIC aims to get more young women involved in STEM by pairing a mentee with a female role model to work on technological projects that fit her interests. The uniqueness and strength of this program is in the one-on-one relationships that exist between a mentor and mentee and the ability of the pair to create a project that highlights the mentee’s interests as well as her development during the program. MAGIC is special because it allows young women to develop not only technical skills but soft skills as well such as the confidence to bring their ideas to fruition. Being able to share my passion with my mentees and see their excitement and growth over the course of the year has been incredibly rewarding as well. It is the most rewarding volunteer experience that I have been a part of and I would highly recommend it to both mentees and mentors.
MAGIC aims to get more girls involved in STEM fields and as a mentor, I was able to help my mentee (a middle-schooler), channel her creativity to work on a project in her field of interest - neuroscience. Discussing physiological facts about the brain and recent medical technology developments with her was a lot of fun and it got her more interested in neuroscience. Overall, being able to have an impact on these young minds and helping them have fun while learning is a very gratifying experience.
MAGIC corporation is a way in which children have fun in what they are learning. This was my first year and I had a wonderful time working on my project with my mentor, Magreth. The organization also develops children's passion in engineering. They allow the students to explore other sides of engineering as a career such as creating games and attending some conferences.
I was a MAGIC mentee for 2015-2016 and have thereafter been impassioned to pursue STEM related subjects. I never would have developed my interest in coding if it hadn't been for my mentor, who shared personal and professional insight with me and continually impressed with her with her wide and deep knowledge in computer science.
Mentoring with MAGIC is one of the most satisfying decisions I have ever made. This is my second year mentoring with MAGIC, and I am looking forward for the third year! I have had great times with my mentees and fellow mentors, I am so amazed by how MAGIC have been able to positively impact the career decisions of these young women. I am glad to be part of this initiative!
I started with MAGIC as a mentee, and have now had the wonderful experience of being a mentor. MAGIC is such a wonderful program, and I have learned and grown from being both a mentee and a mentor.
Thank you so much to Michelle, Ms. Entress, and Ms. Pramanick! I've learned so much and I definitely had so much fun. I now know how to connect different things to STEM and explore and discover even more. Thanks again!
I am the Computer Science department chair and MAGIC coordinator for my school, the Girls' Middle School in Palo Alto, CA. At this point, MAGIC has matched nearly 50 young women from my school with female mentors who share their STEM interests. What a gift to those girls! The value of the 1-to-1 mentorships cannot be overstated. Though our school already has a strong math, science, and technology focus, this program has given an extra boost to girls who have a hunger to 'go deeper' and who crave the specialized knowledge that a professional in the field has to offer. Year after year, I see our MAGIC students thrive on the relationships they build through the program and develop technical talents beyond what could usually be expected from a middle schooler. The individualized direct support of programs like MAGIC is the best way overcome the sense of exclusion from the STEM fields that so many women feel. Hooray to the uniformly excellent MAGIC volunteers (and MAGIC's dedicated founder, Ira Pramanick) for addressing a critical need and helping to cultivate our next generation of technical leaders.
Our 14 year old daughter participated in the MAGIC program in 2014. She learnt about the program from her school. It was a phenomenal learning experience and I highly recommend the program. All girls had to complete a formal application, go through an interview process and commit to a couple of hours of project work for 3-4 months period. MAGIC leaders paired our daughter with a wonderful young woman, Michelle. She is an amazing role model for young girls – she is caring, patient, extremely intelligent, hardworking, highly accomplished and fun loving. Our daughter looked forward to her Saturday morning sessions with Michelle. Our daughter is interested in Biology, Genetics, Drug discovery and Programming. They started by learning Python programming as well as some basic concepts in genetics. Michelle helped our daughter brainstorm and come up with a programming project related to genetics. At the end of the program the girls and their mentors presented and demonstrated their work. The girls seem to have benefited immensely and confidently talked about the various projects. Our daughter learnt a lot from Michelle and is keen on going deeper into the topic. Michelle has become a very good friend, is a great mentor and someone our daughter admires and genuinely looks up to. We really appreciate Ira Pramanick for starting such a great program that will have a lasting impact on the lives of these young girls. Thank you Ira and Michelle!
I applied for mentoring here, and I was given a very warm and kind mentor. I had a variety of options to choose from for learning. I finally chose to learn about Python. We used Codeacademy to finish lessons. It was a wonderful experience, considering the fact that I have never done programming in my life. It allowed me to practice Math, my favorite subject. When I realized I wasn't very interested in Genetics, I was able to switch to something else easily. This was a wonderful experience, and my mentor has been very kind, generous, and she is a great teacher. I would strongly recommend this program for any girl in middle or high school.
Thank you so much for MAGIC Sara and Ira. My daughter is going to Gunn High School next year, and is signed up for advanced math, and auto mechanics. When she started at GMS she hated science and math, and now they are her two favorite subjects by a lot. Thank you for helping her find her interests. I think auto mechanics is going to be great for her, it reminds me of the kinds of things she did with Sara.

I was able to learn HTML and CSS in only a few weeks and then create a project with my information and HTML. We are now learning Java Script and my mentor has found a perfect site to do so! MAGIC helped me learn A LOT I didn't know and my mentor was flexible to meet any time.
I liked learning how to code one on one because it was more comfortable to ask questions and because I didn't have to worry about what others would think of my questions. I was also able to fully understand everything at my own pace. I really loved working with Tanya Gupta, my mentor, and getting to know her over the year. She's so nice, supportive, and patient. I really felt like we developed a friendship. I really looked forward to my meetings with her; it was a highlight of my week. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone who is interested in learning how to code, they will love it!
I really loved MAGIC. I was a MAGIC Mentee during the 2013 - 2014 school year, and I learned a lot. It was great since I got to pick what I wanted to do, unlike a summer camp, where I have to do what they want me to do. I made an app with Corona SDK, and since it was my mentor's first time using this, she learned a lot as well. Because it was one-on-one, I learned a lot more than I would if I was in a class. I am now very interested in Computer Science and I will definitely take Computer Science classes!
I have been mentoring with MAGIC for two years now and have loved my experience. It is very exciting to meet young minds who are keen in the STEM fields and then see them grow and develop interests.
I had a wonderful experience as a MAGIC mentee during the 2013-2014 school year. It was a great because I always knew I could go to my mentor if I had any questions, and even if she didn't know the answer- she would by the following meeting. The best part of MAGIC is definitely being able to choose what I want to learn and how I want to learn about it. This flexibility allowed for me to find languages I liked, and get the chance to learn more about them. I also really liked how I was the one coming up with the projects and I got the chance to add my own elements. A website like CodeAcademy was a great resource, but it meant so much more to have someone there going over the information with me. Overall I had a great experience, and I know that I will take this experience with me into high school and through the rest of my Computer Science education.
I started volunteering with MAGIC since 2013 as a mentor. I found it very rewarding to share my experience one-on-one with my mentee, and to learn from her. We all agree that having a role model in our life and career path is very important, and I am amazed by the positive impact MAGIC is bringing to the young women and the mentors .
The power of a positive female role model cannot be overstated. MAGIC is a wonderful opportunity for girls interested in technology to learn skills from a female mentor. My daughter participated as a 7th grader and had a wonderful mentee from Stanford University. Throughout the year with her mentee she learned and utilized several programming languages to create her first website. The guidance from her mentee helped frame the computer programming tasks within a larger university and work context. To boot she just had a blast spending time with such a cool young woman. Brava, MAGIC!
MAGIC is an amazing program and the experience I had impacted my future aspirations for the batter. Last year, I participated in the MAGIC program. I was in 7th grade and decided it would be a fun experience. I was interested in astronomy and astrophysics, but they didn't have a mentor for me in that field, so they went and found one. My mentor, Jessica Werk, was the best possible mentor I could have had. she was personable, kind, and a great teacher. We studies many difficult and engaging topics including computational programing, Hubbell's law, and trigonometry. When it was over last spring, I wanted to keep learning and exploring. MAGIC didn't just teach me knew facts, but a new way of looking at learning. I would love to do it again if given the chance, and would recommend it to anyone.
My daughter participated in the program while in her 7th grade at GMS. She had previous experience with lego robotics and wanted to do more advanced robotics. The magic mentor program was a rewarding experience for her. Her mentor Sara introduced her to new techniques, hardware and software to work on a ambitious project to build a robot that cleans floors. My daughter learned a lot from trial and error and greatly valued the one-on-one time spent with Sara. I highly recommend this program for middle and high school girls.
This is an amazing program! I was a mentee for a year and I learned so much about programming in Python. I know i will be able to apply the skills that I learned at MAGIC to any computing I choose to do in the future. This is a great organization and I am so thankful for everything I got out of it.
Magic is a great organization. Participating in Magic as a mentor is a great opportunity to use the skills I have learned over the years as a Computer Scientist to motivate young women to consider computing related careers. I have enjoyed working with my mentee toward a common goal and seeing her express her ideas throughout the duration of the mentorship. I have also gained a lot by participating and have learned a lot about myself in the process. This program is awesome and I appreciate the chance to be a part of it.
MAGIC is great! As an engineering student the opportunity to use my skills to teach and motivate a young girl is extremely valuable. I was able to grow a lot from seeing my mentee learn and apply her new skills in Computer Science.
Magic is a really great experience. I enjoyed the time and very appreciate the knowledge that will help me guide through engineering in the future ! They helped open my eyes towards technology further
MAGIC is a great program! I met online with my mentor once a week, and it was incredible! My mentor, Ms. Tanya Gupta, taught me how to program using Java. I learned many different types of code as well as helpful tips for getting a career in the computer science field. I honestly really enjoyed this program and seeing myself get a head start in the STEM field.
What a truly "Magical" organization this is! My twelve year old daughter had a mentor who came to our home every week from October through May and spent time building and programming robots with her. It was so fun to hear them collaborating on their projects. The mentor was a great match for my daughter's personality and interests. Thank you for helping keep STEM interests alive and well in my home!
I am a first-time volunteer for getmagic.org. The vision of this organization is to get more girls involved in STEM related fields and one of the important aspects of this vision is to make sure that strong role-models are available to the girls. Role-models who are women and are intimately involved in STEM related fields. I believe in and respect this vision and through my first year with getmagic.org as a volunteer, I have seen this visiont make a tangible and significant difference to the participating girls. The best part is seeing the girls being inspired by small technological projects and seeing them use it towards thinking about a career in a STEM related field.
I had a great experience volunteering for MAGIC. Although I live in another state, I was still able to participate fully in the program. My mentor and I met online and spent our time learning about computer programming and writing small programs. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in being a mentor or mentee in STEM topics, even if you can only do so remotely.
I had a great experience volunteering as a MAGIC mentor; I have already recommended it to my colleagues and we have set up a pilot program between our organization, a local University, and a local Middle School that will follow MAGIC's process and work on the same principles. I had volunteered with several different types of STEM events in the past (science demonstrations, talks, and science fair judging) but was looking for a more personal and long-term project that had more flexibility than a coach or tutor - and I found it and more with MAGIC. As a first time mentor, they offered great guidance and support system but also let my mentee and I work independently. We really connected even though we had never met in person (although i would have loved to, and MAGIC would have made it happen); she was truly receptive to the things I had to say, and I found myself sharing things about my experiences that I might not have thought were important but actually did make an impact on her thoughts about STEM and how she approached choosing her major and career field. I really did feel that just an hour a week with her had a big impact, and we didn't even need to talk about technical STEM nitty-gritty every week. I would definitely recommend the MAGIC program to other mentors AND mentees!
I had an amazing experience with the MAGIC program! My mentor, Esha, provided amazing lessons about computer science and showed how it is relevant today. I truly looked forward to my weekly sessions and was always excited to get feedback on the programs I had worked on. Esha was great when it came to scheduling; she was always flexible and made sure our lessons occurred every week. Through the MAGIC program, I gained so much confidence in myself and in my ability to program. I have already used my knowledge in my classes. The MAGIC program is truly amazing.
The MAGIC program is phenomenal! I have been in the program twice once sophomore year and once the summer after senior year in high school. I had absolutely no programming experience when I started and my first Mentor Surahbi was so considerate and patient. She took time out of her busy schedule to meet with me every week and taught me very useful coding knowledge that has helped me even in my Introduction to Java class in college. My second mentor, Esha, was equally dedicated and super understanding. She created interesting lectures and programs and even tailored to my individual schedule's needs. Without this program I would not be able to be the confident programmer I am today and I certainly would not have even chosen Computer Science as a career path. As I am in college now, I can definitively say that MAGIC is a very comprehensive and savvy non-profit. Hopefully, one day I will come full cycle and have the joy of being a volunteer with the organization and change a girl's life as much as MAGIC changed mine.
I was a participant in the MAGIC program last year and had a wonderful experience. I developed and designed a website with my mentor who gave me the tools to continue developing it even after the program ended. It was a great learning experience and I really value the time I spent with my mentor and appreciate the skills I gained throughout the year.

I have learned so much about how I can serve in the computer science field. I have the "reigns." I choose what I want to learn, and how I learn it, which has been a really great experience! I care about the projects I work on and I am genuinely interested in everything I do with MAGIC. I was paired with my mentor because we have a lot in common, which means I really enjoy talking to her, and working with her. It has been a great experience!
GetMagic is centered in California. My understanding is that a long-term goal is to expand to other regions of the U.S. I tried unsuccessfully in 2010 to engage potential mentors in Iowa (my home state). I contacted several female professionals (engineers and professors) but could not get them to commit to mentoring young girls.
Unfortunately, Iowa does not have the industrial base that California has, so the pool of potential mentors is quite small to begin with.
I joined getMagic as a mentor in 2010 and have been mentoring two girls so far. I work with the girls on STEM projects, discuss college choices and explore future career paths in STEM.
During my mentoring, I got fantastic support from the GetMagic management board, as well as from other mentors. We have monthly meetings with other GetMagic mentors, as well as regular 1:1 meetings with the management board. The feedback I get from these meetings helps me very much in my work with the girls. It is great to see how much everyone from GetMagic is involved in supporting young girls interested in STEM.
GetMAGIC has been an amazing learning experience for not only my mentee but for me as well. The opportunity to meet with someone who shares similar interests and passions has been rewarding. She is so willing to learn, that coming up with creative ideas has been challenging but definitely worth it. MAGIC has made it possible to encourage female youths to hold on to their interests in technology and pursue it. MAGIC has created a positive community of encouragement and development and will continue to grow.
Engineering and Computer Science are great well-paying fields and a degree can be achieved in 4 years of study, yet the percentage of girls who elect to major in these fields is low. There is a perception problem, and GetMagic seeks to overcome it by linking women in engineering and computer science careers with girls who have the potential to succeed in these fields.
GetMAGIC has a unique model. They recruit highly talented and motivated young Women to help middle and high school girls build a a career in STEM.
The mentees get the undivided attention of these highly charged mentors for a full academic year. The mentoring curriculum is totally flexible. It is based on the mentees needs and wishes. The mentee is encouraged to set the agenda and plan on utilizing their mentor. Besides motivating and providing access to STEM related resources the mentee is also taught important life skills like planning, managing time, communication etc. as a by-product of the STEM related mentoring.
They have an amazing list of mentees.
The organization model is amazing too. It takes just two women running it part time to get a lot done. They keep focused on tehir core value proposition and keep costs down. GetMagic must have the lowest benefit to cost ratio in the industry.
I really enjoyed the opportunity of being able to learn about computer networking and just science in general from a woman who was very knowledgeable (Wendy Pinos). I found the program helpful for me to learn what it was I was interested in and what it was I didn't want to learn about so much. For example, I was more interested in planet exploration than solar energy. My overall experience was great!
I was a mentee in the MAGIC kickoff in the 2008-2009 school year. My mentor was Rosemary Emery-Montemerlo. We met once a week for about seven months. I had a blast in my one-on-one mentoring experience. My mentor and I looked at object oriented programs (Scratch and Alice) and coding in a computer language (Python). Not only did we learn about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) topics, but we also shared stories of our lives and family. I built a bond with my mentor that will never be forgotten. Being a part of Magic has been a great experience for me, and I am pleased to say that I keep in touch with my mentor to this day!
Our school's partnership with GetMagic has allowed girls with a strong interest in computer science and other STEM fields to explore those interests in a supportive yet flexible environment. Not only have the girls learned new skills and been exposed to new technologies and opportunities, but they have also developed their organizational and self advocacy skills as they work with an adult mentor outside of the normal school day.
MAGIC's goal is to encourage teenage girls to deepen their interest in science, technology, engineering, or math by fostering one-on-one mentoring relationships with successful women in one of these fields. Healthy relationships between the mentor and the girls builds self confidence and really gives the girls a glimpse of what they can be "when they grow up." The projects that the girls work on are fabulous and for those who have participated in Grace Hopper- what an invaluable experience!!
GetMagic is a wonderful opportunity for professionals who work in industry to share their experiences and career choices as a way of encouraging young women to pursue careers in STEM disciplines. Consequently, the young lady I mentored has indicated a strong interest in engineering and will be taking an Introduction to Engineering class in the fall. I believe our discussions about career opportunities in science and engineering related fields helped her to identify new interests and open the door to the academic path and career options for engineering. I endorse GetMagic as an opportunity for exposing young women to career opportunities in STEM disciplines and helping them to make critical decisions as this point in their lives.
I have been associated with MAGIC as a volunteer for a year now. I mentored a middle-school girl for the academic year 2009-2010 and did several computer-science projects with her. I thoroughly enjoyed my relationship with the mentee and how we turned her ideas into interesting projects. The mentoring process was made very natural and simple because of the constant support from the core team and all other mentors. To me, MAGIC is not just an opportunity to help a young STEM enthusiast, but also a conducive environment to grow as a mentor and as a scientist.
I started with MAGIC as a volunteer in Nov, 2009 and have been a mentor to a high school girl for the past 5 months. I highly value the 1 on 1 interaction as I think this format provides the greatest impact on the girls. The core management does a great job providing support for each mentor-mentee relationship - while we enjoy almost total freedom in mentoring topics, we must follow certain guidelines to ensure that the girls get a full experience out of each 6-9 month mentorship.
This is my first year as a mentee in Magic and I have had a great experience. I have learned a lot and improved in many areas. My mentor and I used a program called Scratch as well as Stagecast. I have had a wonderful time with my mentor and I think that this was a great opportunity.
My daughter had been asking to take a computer science but no classes are offered anywhere in our district. I heard about MAGIC and my daughter was enrolled as a mentee. She learned so much over the course of the meetings I could not believe it. She programmed a simple calculator and a phone app. Most important, she is even more interested in computer science. There are so few programs available like this. We need to scale it up!
I have been working with MAGIC for two years. Each years I mentored a middle school girl at GMS in Mountain View. In the weekly meetings, we read some STEM related articles online, programmed together using tools like Scratch, played puzzles together. Overall I can see the girls improving their logic thinking skills, and the experience is very rewarding to me as well. MAGIC provides the opportunity to work closely with schools and attract young minds that are interested in learning more about STEM. I strongly support MAGIC and will continue to contribute as a mentor in the program.
