Review for People Making a Difference (PMD), Boston, MA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Great local organization that brings together teams of volunteers for other small local non-profits. Projects are well-organized so you just need to bring yourself.

The projects are always well-organized and useful to the organization receiving the help.

Review for Getmagic Corporation, San Jose, CA, USA

Rating: 4 stars

Engineering and Computer Science are great well-paying fields and a degree can be achieved in 4 years of study, yet the percentage of girls who elect to major in these fields is low. There is a perception problem, and GetMagic seeks to overcome it by linking women in engineering and computer science careers with girls who have the potential to succeed in these fields.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

From my perspective as a Mentor, it is wonderful to be able to share my interest and excitement with someone who is so interested and eager to learn. Knowing that I am working with someone who already has an aptitude ensures this does not become a waste of time for either of us.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

My main concern is whether this single year of mentorship is enough to really have an effect. Eventually I'd like to see the organization provide statistics on how many mentees went on to Engineering and Computer Science fields.

Role:  Volunteer & This is my first year as a Mentor, working on a Java project with a middle school girl.
