Mission: Free the hops (fth) mission is to help bring the highest quality beers in the world to alabama. We are motivated by a desire to have the same variety of choice when purchasing beer as are currently available to other states in the u. S.
Programs: In may 2009 free the hops' gourmet beer bill was passed into law loosening a major restriction on beer in alabama by increasing the limit on alcohol by volume in beer from 6% to 13. 9%. In may of 2011, the passing of free the hops' brewery modernization act allowed breweries to sell beer both on-premises and to wholesalers prompting the opening of numerous taprooms around the state. On may 16, 2012, the gourmet bottle bill was enacted, lifting the maximum bottle beer size to 25. 4 ounces from the previous limit of 16 ounces, thus allowing sales of the 22-ounce, 750-milliliter bottles used by many craft breweries in alabama. Free the hops also supported efforts to legalize homebrewing in the state of alabama. Homebrewing became legal in may 2013. These steps helped open the state to more business from craft brewers and provide a boost to alabama's growing beer industry.
free the hops (fth) provided beer samples at tasting events in birmingham and huntsville, alabama allowing members and the general public to sample beers not currently available in the state of alabama. The beers sampled are not currently available in alabama due to a number of restrictions on beer and brewing in the state which are related to container size limits and brewing restrictions.
