Volunteering Oportunities

Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Home Improvement & Repairs, Homeless & Housing, Women, Women's Centers

Mission: To educate, motivate, and empower women of all ages facing critical needs at home, using actual home repair tools and their life parallels. We are repairing homes, building women and changing lives!

Results: WUCN and HART Tools just kicked off our JUNE 2021 Building Hope Campaign!! We have over 130 volunteers on the move and we've just served women in McDonald's Lakeshore! LOOK FOR US ALL OVER BIRMINGHAM in the month of JUNE 2021 - We're showing random and planned acts of kindness at McDonald's, Shell Gas Stations, Police Departments, w/First Responders/Healthcare Staff, and more! -- 1,021 Acts of Kindness, 121 Volunteers, JUNE 2021!

Target demographics: Women of all ages (and their familes) facing critical needs at home.

Direct beneficiaries per year: Approximately 1,000 women, youth.

Geographic areas served: The city of Birmingham and five central AL areas.

Programs: Our initiatives provide home repair, home goods, appliances, and groceries for women and their children. Past programs have included seminars on financial stability, self-esteem, community housing project facility collaborations and temporary housing assistance. Power Tool Socials - a series of events that provide home repair demonstrations, household tips and encouraging words that motivate and empower women. The WILAH Project: Through the WILAH Project, single mothers and women from underserved communities learn a myriad of home repair skills that help them maintain their largest financial investment: their home. Additionally, the project provides a means of building self-confidence that helps participants become more productive, self-sufficient citizens. In the first phase of the program, instructors teach selected women to use household tools (i.e. hammers, saws, power drills, etc.) and provide the opportunity to apply the learned skills in a simulated at home repair setting. In the second phase, motivational speakers and counselors teach positive life principles and challenge, motivate and inspire the women through tool/life parallels.

Women Under Construction Network engages women where they are.. but not to leave them there. We are constantly reminded of our value and we share that with those we serve. It is uplifting to work with the leaders who are caring. They genuinely care about helping women to be better while developing life skills and self confidence.. I don't know what could be improved.. it is a stellar non-profit.

As a volunteer for WUCNetwork, I have been so impressed with the work they do as a non-profit organization. I have witnessed the many programs they run and am amazed at the assistance they give to the many women and families in need. WUCNetwork is a dedicated and hard working organization that I am proud to say I have had the honor of working with. Being a senior volunteer I am physically unable to participate in all events, but so enjoy working with WUCNetwork when I can.

WUCNetwork definitely deserves being chosen as a 2021 Top Non-Profit Organization and they have a 5-star leader in Shellie Layne.

WUCN is an organization that help women develop themselves in areas they would never think of, whether spiritual, mentally or emotional. It also reaches out to help in the community and have monthly conference calls discussing different helpful topics. At this time, I see no area in which to improve.

I thoroughly enjoy the WUCN socials. There is so much laughter and unbiased acceptance. You don't meet strangers. Whether you have long nails and lashes or not you can learn to make basic home repairs. The life lessons by Shellie are amazing when coupled with a building principle/ tool.

I have been participating in their various offerings of Help with building lives..they are truly invested in making women understand their value...so many have been used and abused in life that it takes a special person to bring them around to understand that they are worth being loved and respected. I have been encouraged and uplifted through many of Shellie's teachings and presentations. Her spiritual view on God and His Help and care along with Her practical applications of tools and building are wonderful and easy to understand and apply. I thank God for her and Women Under Construction for all that has helped me to grow and be a strong woman of God and a blessing to others

Women Under Construction Network is like no other organization! I love seeing women come together for a great cause to empower each other and cheer each other on. Repairing Homes, Building Women, and Changing lives is exactly what this organization is all about. The 21 days of Building Hope across the city was an amazing program this year! The excitement of this inspired me to do share kindness in my own way outside of what WUCN was doing. Keep up the great work Shellie and Leadership Team!!

The Women Under Construction Network is by far one of the area's most impactful self improvement mediums for women of all ages and backgrounds. I've been connected to this organization for over five years and have personally observed the life altering affect that the leaders of WUCN have had on the women in my community and beyond. WUCN has effected positive change not only in the lives of women of my city but women across the US.
I can think of no other organization more deserving of continued support and recognition for its significant contributions to society.

I am grateful for Women Under Construction Network and the efforts that this organization has undertaken in working with several of our technology majors at Miles College. By partnering with us, WUCN has been a training ground for our students as they have come through our Community Service Internship class. WUCN has given our students the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience prior to their entering the world of work. In addition, our students have received valuable mentorship through WUCN which enables them to grow as individuals and as productive members of society. I am so appreciative of the opportunities that this joint venture has afforded our students. I look forward to all of the great things that WUCN will bring to bear in the years to come. Thank you, WUCN!

The Women Under Construction Network is such a blessing to our community! True to their mission of empowering women and changing lives, the WUCN helps women from all backgrounds overcome obstacles like insecurity, fear, and poor self esteem. Not only can you learn how to use a power drill for basic home repair projects, you can also learn how to drill down emotionally to become more persistent in setting and pursuing your life goals. With projects, seminars, and activities ranging from Mother - Daughter workshops to programs designed for single mothers, the WUCN touches women of all ages. I highly recommend this organization for anyone interested in becoming better at living and loving themselves and others.

Women Under Construction Network is an awesome organization that uplifts and empowers women in a unique way; using simple home repair tips and tools. This simple approach empowers us to perform simple home repairs and LIFE repairs simultaneously. Utilizing the understanding of how tools work in the natural makes it easy to see how this same concept can enhance us in all areas of our lives: spirit, soul & body. The live events that I have attended were amazing: the props, the singing, the food, the fun, the smiles, the people, the speakers, the lessons learned, etc. I do not have adequate words to describe the energy in the room. You would have to be there to embrace the full power of the experience. Women Under Construction uniquely uses tools and home repairs to talk about life, to repair homes, build women and change lives.

Hi my name is Wanda Brown,
Women Under Construction Network is a wonderful organization to be apart of. It is a healthy and fun loving environment. Great people, great information to help me grow and learn more about myself and others.
Each experience for me has been uplifting encouraging and fun! Quick and easy lessons on home repairs and personal ones too.
Since 2014, many of the events that I have attended, I didn't know I needed to work on myself until I saw how many other women were experiencing the same kinds of everyday issues. WUCNetwork has helped me understand that I'm not alone.
I will be forever under construction and always grateful to have the opportunity to see what's next! If you are considering attending the next upcoming event, you won't be disappointed!
