Mission: Charlie F. Shufeldt, a 12-year-old of the Westminster school system of Atlanta GA, started FREE BYTES in 1992. At that time, young Charlie recognized a need of many nonprofits to receive computer equipment. And during that same year invited several of his schoolmates to join him in the refurbishment of computers for those nonprofits.
Charlie recognized that many Corporations and Individuals have computer equipment that no longer meets the needs of that corporation or individual. Though they may be interested in donating that equipment, often the equipment is in an unusable or not ideally useable condition. FREE BYTES steps in to meet that need by reconfiguring the equipment to be more ideally suited to meet the needs of a nonprofit organization. Owen Boger and Josh Silfen are two of the original 13-year-olds that played an instrumental role in the creation and development of FREE BYTES since 1992.
Together: Charlie, Owen, and Josh make up the founders of Free Bytes. The YWCA and Computers for classrooms are two of the first Nonprofits that were provided computers by Free Bytes.

I started out as the volunteer coordinator for this organization. It did a 'great' job of not only making good use of old computer equipment but also of teaching others how to use computers and to not be afraid of the process of repairing them.
There are literally thousands of people that learned how to repair computers for free at this organization. And for those that never asked for a computer in exchange for their volunteer work, I solute you. You are among the few that had a good reason for being there.
