Mission: Foundation for advanced education in the sciences, inc (faes) is a non-profit organization, located at the national institutes of health (hereafter "nih"), which conducts advanced educational programs and supporting activities to promote the productivity and attractiveness of professional life on the nih campus. Faes programs complement the work of nih in accomplishing its mission of research and training in the biomedical sciences.
Programs: Health insurance:administrative services/plan sponsorship for a group health insurance plan which is available to nih trainees whom work at or for the nih, but are ineligible for federal health insurance. Nih trainees function as students, also referred to as fellows, and are the primary market that the faes serves. This program provides health insurance for 3,700 students, provides excellent benefits, affordable annual maximum, and low out-of-pocket expenses.
education: the graduate school has over 1,600 enrollments per year studying areas to fill the gap between traditional academic programs and working in a world-class biomedical research environment at nih faes offers over 100 courses in biochemistry, bioinformatics, biology, chemistry, genetics, immunology, mathematics, medicine, microbiology, pharmacology, public health, statistics, technology transfer, toxicology, gre prep, mcat review, english as a second language (esl), french, spanish, mindfulness, and more all courses are affordable, convenient and relevant. Significant efforts were undertaken to increase student feedback and act on the feedback to increase retention and satisfaction resulting in enrollments increased over prior academic year. The graduate school also has two advanced studies programs, technology transfer from which the credits can be transferred into several university of maryland university college master degree programs and public health that covers epidemiology, bio-statistics, environmental health sciences, health policy and management, and social and behavioral sciences. Faes also offers over 30 different types of lab technique training courses taught by nih scientists and other leading biomedical field experts and hosts a wide variety of experts, musical performances, and events to supplement the educational programming in support of the nih. Workshop training include 2-5 day sessions, weekend offerings, or cover a full academic year, and include classroom or online lectures, as well as laboratory exercises. Participants also have an opportunity to earn continuing education units, graduate credits, or qualify for internships upon completion of the requirements. The faes biotech program also offers educational products and cell kits to supplement training and enhance the education of young scientists.
conferences: faes supports educational, cultural, and professional initiates of the nih and actively seeks out ways to do more to facilitate a collegial environment. Faes hosts 18 events annually - 2 conferences, 4 workshops, 5 memorial lectures, and 7 other educational lectures. Conferences offered cover topics such as endocrinology, biophysical science, big data in symptoms research conferences, and growing with continuing medical education (cme) and continuing education (ce) credits available.
