Programs: Developed an organic greenhouse/hoophouse project called the high desert farming initiative on the campus of the university of nevada at reno in conjunction with the college of agriculture, bio-technology and natural resources using a hud grant provided by the college of business and the sba. The purpose was to demonstrate the effectiveness of growing plants and produce in a harsh climate and to use interns and students for training purposes. The second program developed was the construction of two greenhouse based organic sustainable aquaponic programs using (2) four thousand gallon tanks and raising one thousand tilapia. This project has drawn the attention of the public as well as national media since it is one of the first successfully operated programs in a high altitude, desert environment. Programs and workshops including seed propagation classes were conducted throughout the year. At this juncture focus is no longer specifically targeting the veteran or prisoner population. The programs are now more oriented toward r&d for the purpose of maximizing the sustainability qualities of growing systems that reduce water and energy demand while still producing high quality organic plants and produce.
