Mission: The mission of contemporary ballet dallas is to present innovative dance performances and educational programs to a broad audience, while cultivating emerging dance artists and choreographers in north texas.
Programs: The 2010-2011 season marks cbd's tenth anniversary. Since founding, cbd has produced full concert seasons, premiered over 50 original works, afforded opportunities to 30 local, emerging choreographers to set works (providing dancers, costumes, lights and a concert to premiere their works at no cost to them); commissioned 6 new works from respected and renowned choreographers; and participated in a number of area art and dance festivals. Contemporary ballet dallas maintains a goal of presenting 2-3 high quality contemporary dance concerts each year, as well as continuing to present our community outreach programs to underserved students through our chance to dance educational initiatives. Community outreach:contemporary ballet dallas is dedicated to promoting arts appreciation and cultivating local art by serving as a platform for emerging artists and choreographers. We promote arts appreciation by implementing outreach programs that make dance accessible to underserved communities and by providing low-cost, professional-level dance training to young people and adults. Our community services also include donating tickets to our shows to underserved communities. At the wild & free show in october 2010 and our boogie woogie christmas carol performance in december 2010, over 400 tickets were donated to underserved communities. Nearly 70% of those tickets were donated to low-income families; groups receiving tickets included child protective services of dallas, boles children's homes, and artreach. We have previously had a partnership with risd schools, where we performed free afternoon concerts for children, presented opportunities to experience being "on-stage" and held proactive lecture demonstrations. Other previous outreach efforts include the cbd chance to dance program, which offers free dance classes to visually- impaired and other special needs children, including those with down syndrome & other developmental disabilities. Cbd offered a chance to dance workshop in february 2010 with suzanne rossol matheson, ma, adtr, ncc. Artistic merit:cbd was founded to revitalize dance in dallas, and quickly attracted area professionals. Our company is comprised of dancers as unique as the pieces we perform. The majority of our dancers have college dance degrees and have performed professionally, bringing a greater maturity and a distinctive emotional and artistic intellect to the stage. The artistic directors have dance degrees as well as professional degrees, and have had excellent dance training and many years of experience in directing the company. Guest choreographers are generally well-known artists from around the metroplex but have also been artists creating a name for themselves in other cities. Cbd offers contemporary dance works incorporating many art mediums to create a well-rounded experience. Our concerts are billed for the everyday man, as well as the ballet aficionado, promising all genres of music including current popular songs. The fusion between traditional ballet and contemporary dance appeals to not only customary ballet supporters, but also excites people that do not usually attend performing arts events. Each concert is carefully orchestrated to include songs that audiences respond to, provoking thought and interpretation. We have received favorable reviews from dance critics throughout the area and are recognized throughout the local dance scene. Recent accolades:cbd had two appearances on television in 2010 and a major article in the dallas morning news. Cbd's artistic director, valerie tabor, recently received the lead story in texas lawyer magazine and appeared on time warner cable's community connection in the dallas area on november 12, continuing to air throughout november and december.
