Causes: Children & Youth, Youth Development Programs
Mission: To raise self-esteem, develop basic work skills, work ethics, education, and promote teamwork for long beach area at-risk youth through a combination of work, conservation, and education programs.
Programs: Serve unemployed young adults from ages 18 to 25 by providing them with education development through paid job training skills and completed high school diplomas (approximately 313 served). The young adults who are in the job readiness program participate in the recycling program as part of their job readiness skills and work experience training. Total pounds of recyclables collected was 300,591 with 15,531 consisting of the e-waste. There were 66 site visits to certified oil collection centers and 241 special events, including 24 related to tire amnesty. Corpsmembers participated in a heavy equipment and construction pre-apprenticeship program (approximately 28 served) through a partnership with the long beach community college. Operate community projects in the city of long beach such as the after school program together with the long beach unified school district (approximately 315 served). Services in the after school program include structured homework help/tutoring, enrichment and psycho-physical education activities.
