Math in a Basket has transformed my 4th graders since the program was implemented in my school last year. The in-service training provided to teachers before the first year of implementation was phenomenal; we spent four days learning about the "math" behind the program while we had the opportunity to create four unique baskets for ourselves. I believe that Dramatic Results truly embodies the Chinese proverb "Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand." By being involved in the basket making process ourselves, we were well equipped to help our students understand not only how to design and create a basket, but to learn some key mathematical concepts that are vital to success in 4th grade Common Core mathematics. The teaching team is top-notch; it's clear that Dramatic Results recruits and trains their teaching artists to combine their knowledge of art and engineering with meaningful mathematics instruction. Both last year and this year, I have had students come to life with enthusiasm for the program who previously thought of math as something difficult to understand. In addition, Dramatic Results has designed a 3-year inclusion program for classroom teachers which has allowed us to gradually take on more responsibility. The first year, we served as "guides on the side" while the teaching artists delivered the lessons. This year, the classroom teachers have collaborated to teach half of each lesson with guidance from the teaching artists. This interim step gives the classroom teachers the valuable opportunity to learn and embody the concepts before we "step up to the plate" next year as the primary instructors. The most amazing thing about our Math in a Basket program, however, centers around the students and their enthusiasm for learning. My 4th graders eagerly look forward to each lesson, and I have witnessed several at-risk students embrace both the program and the essential learning behind it. I feel truly lucky to be a part of this incredible program and, as a veteran teacher of 30+ years, I have yet to see a program that produces the same results as Math in a Basket.
Dramatic Results has provided me with an exceptional work experience, building STEAM programs for the youth in my community. I am able to witness growth in the students who participate in programming that came from the guidance of Dramatic Results. Many students who I had the opportunity to work with were able to learn about Design Thinking, problem-solving, and team-building by means of STEAM workshops led by young teachers, STEAM experts, and teaching artists. Our goals for increasing STEAM knowledge, confidence, and a stronger sense-of-self not only has been apparent with the youth in our programming, but I've noticed this in me, my colleagues and our collaborators. Working with Dramatic Results has changed the way I view the classroom. I teach at the University level and have incorporated many of the practices I've learned into classes. The example that stands out is using check-ins and "I like & I wish" I learned from DR.
I used these practices, and others, and at the end of the semester a student said that my class was the one place during the week where he knew he could share what was going on and no-one would judge him, question him, or ignore him. For this student, our classroom was a safer place where he felt heard. That left a huge impact on me, and changed how I viewed what can happen in a classroom.

For the past few years I've had the pleasure of working with Dramatic Results as an educator with LBPL. It's been a a really great experience learning and growing as an educator with Dramatic Results and I appreciate the emphasis on design thinking, not just as a tool that we teach the students, but also as the process we use to develop and implement our workshops. In our organization we've been able to take what we've learned and apply it into our own programming.
I am so in love with the work that Dramatic Results to support access and equity for students who are less likely to have the benefits of exposure to STEM. My boys had amazing experiences two years in a row with DR sponsored summer activities that they still rave about to this day. They were immersed in experiences that they would not get in the classroom alone, or even at home. The team who facilitated and supported activities were professional, knowledgeable, and inspiring. The collaborations with the Sailing Center and then the LB Yacht Club made for memorable experiences for my children that will impact them for a lifetime. I was so grateful for the opportunities they had to learn about sailing and engineering both years, and it has been a recent honor to have been invited to join the Board for this amazing nonprofit. I wish every child in Long Beach where I live had the opportunity to participate in a DR activity!

Our boys were blessed not just once, but twice, to participate in summer programs sponsored by Dramatic Results. Last year, they were invited to participate in a STEAM camp at the US Sailing Center. They were excited every week to learn about sailing and engineering. They raced every week and were excited for the opportunity to apply their learning when they engineered and sailed their own boats! This past summer they were extremely appreciative of a second opportunity when they were invited to participate in the LB Yacht Club’s Wet Wednesday’s sailing events. The partnership between Dramatic Results and the US Sailing Center gave them an opportunity they’ll never forget - to compete on a team that included 3 other children in a sailing series against several adult teams. They came in 2nd Place, validating and affirming their abilities as participants, and magnifying this opportunity as something more than just a learning experience. Dramatic Results has been successful in extending the love for science beyond the classroom, by opening doors of opportunity for children who may have otherwise never have had the chance to partake in such activities. Thank you Dramatic Results for igniting these interests in our boys Micah and Maddox! They will never forget their two summers of sailing!

I've been a pre-service teacher for a year and a half now and my experience with Dramatic Results has been a very positive one. I feel very well prepared as a pre-service teacher. Especially having to adapt to distance learning I feel that DR did a great job adapting and thinking outside the box when it came to designing their workshops. Each workshop is unique and fun but I also feel it can be applied to design thinking!

DR is a true inspiration. But more than that, the real, tangible benefits brought to both students and educators through their arts-integrated programming is fantastically empowering, now and in the long-term. Within my teaching experience (i.e. elementary, high school, and college) and years of managing various multimillion dollar stores, I have worked with many different groups and organizations— but Dramatic Results stands out as different.

I have been supporting the Dramatic Results as a Board Member since 2020. The Board is in the process of being revamped and expanded as part of the Board’s succession planning and in an effort to continuously improve the agency's offerings. Board members are quickly oriented to understand each of the nonprofit’s programs/services, including the desired results from each. Monthly Board Meetings are used to communicate accurate and timely reports on status of finances, audit results, and new project plans. The roles of each committee and the Executive Director are clearly defined and documented. I have nothing but good words to share about the existing Board, the Executive Director, and the agency's offerings. I look forward to contributing as a member of the board in the coming years and have a positive outlook on the agency's position in 2020 and beyond.
Dramatic Results continues to meet and exceed its outreach goals in STEAM teaching to gifted children from underprivileged social environments despite the student-teacher divide created by the corona virus pandemic.
After observing their results personally, I have become a board meeting to assist in any manner possible to assist Dramatic Results as they overcome both the normal cultural educational challenges while exploring and implementing new ways to resource their teaching efforts.
Dramatic Results is a breath of fresh air in an education system that is dated and lacking in meeting the holistic needs of all learners. One need only walk into a Dramatic Results’ class to find genuine excitement from students who are engaged, collaborating, and learning, all while having fun. I am a better educator for working with Dramatic Results and hope to be involved in the program in the future.
As an industrial designer, I was definitely not the obvious choice as an intern for an education based nonprofit. But, Dramatic Results definitely flips the script on classic education. Through my time here, I have been able to share my experiences as a designer to students who would not normally get this kind of exposure. While working with Dramatic Results, I have been able to see the opportunities for design to elevate education. The entire time I worked with them, I always felt like my contributions and feedback were valued and taken seriously. I believe that Dramatic Results’ approach to education is paving way to a newer, more relavent way of learning.
Dramatic Results does outstanding work with the local youth of Long Beach. When I worked with them over the summer, I was able to see the difference their program made for students in only a week, which is quite the accomplishment. They also treat everyone with equal regard and respect and kindness regardless of background, which is a quality we need more of.
Dramatic Results (DR) truly showed me the power of community in a multitude of ways. We always hear and say "knowledge is power" and "it takes a village to raise a child..." But what about access to education? What about access to this village? Education is so much more than just school; it is about knowing how to reflect on oneself; how to communicate well; how to network and make relationships for future opportunities; how to establish and maintain relationships whether it be individually or organizationally—and all these things are factors that enhance education and enhance the power of community at a grassroots level. It is about empowerment; empowering not only our students, but everyone who wants to make a positive impact on the youth and community as a whole for a better tomorrow. DR is truly invested in the well-being of our youth and our community, and I am proud to be a part of its vision.
Dramatic Results is an incredible nonprofit that's connecting the resources of the community with students and teachers. Not only do students enjoy learning, they actually get excited about it! To see their joy in using math, science and creativity, and how they're able to grow in their communication skills – it's truly one of a kind.
Dramatic Results is such an amazing hands-on learning program and experience relating to real world experiences for our in-coming 6th grade girl (Raena). Her first experience with DR was during this past summer at the US Sailing Center. Raena had such a fun, adventurous, and memorable learning experience with Samai, Mike, Tori-Ann, Tatyana, and all the staff from both Dramatic Results, Mike, and his US Sailing staff. She learned how to sail a boat and her team even created one out of cardboard! Thanks to the ABC Scholarship program our little girl, Raena, will have the opportunity to immerse herself every Saturday morning with activities and/or lessons/mini-lessons integrated with Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering, and Mathematics throughout the day and it has been such an exciting approach to her learning. She also writes about her experiences and shares them in class with everyone. She is exposed to new and challenging vocabulary words, which will also help her become a stronger reader. Raena is truly excited and looking forward to continue to be a part of Dramatic Results and the ABC Scholarship Program. We are extremely proud and grateful for all involved in her interests and support in her academics. We appreciate all involved in holding high accountability and expectations as well as ensuring collaborative/cooperative group learnings and constantly checking for understanding with high critical thinking. We are really blessed Raena is with Dramatic Results and couldn't be happier. It will prepare her for a happy and successful future. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and we all look forward to the next three exciting years as well as getting to know Brenda (new Program Manager) as well. I became aware of the ABC Program by visiting the Nelson Academy Office and reading a pamphlet on the program because my son qualified a 6th grade student enrolled in accelerated classes. I applied online for my son Jilal and was contacted the next day by Brenda informing me that my son received the last spot in the program! She was very polite, informative, and professional while giving me the basic information on how to get started! I followed up with her today asking questions and she is very patient and excited to be working with all students who were afforded this great opportunity!!!
During the summer, I had the opportunity to work with Dramatic Results; an amazing nonprofit organization which helps students understand the connection between art and STEM fields. Being able to see how they begin to think and make the connects with each activity they do is something I won't forget. Giving the students experiences they won't be able to obtain anywhere else such sailing, which was the first time I had ever gone sailing.

I am very grateful and excited that LBUSD has such a great community that cares about their excelling students. We worked so hard with our children to push them to their full potential. I am glad that their are sponsors and ABC Scholars/Dramatic Results and everyone involved to be able to be apart of such a great STEAM program is an honor for not only my child, but also for me as a parent. My child is a GATE/EXCEL student and while this program is great for him in the classroom, having a program outside the classroom on the summer break and weekends will only help him improve and expand his knowledge and way of thinking with hands on experience. The STEAM program have an extensive mentors that will be helping the kids learn, grow, and think outside of the box. I recommend this program to any parent with a gifted student. This program really help the children reach their full potential and really challenge them. These creative minds need to be challenge on a daily and for my child to be among other peers too, group problem solving and working in groups also help them be prepare with the real world and social settings.
Dramatic Results is a stellar organization doing important work with the mission of using art to help students succeed. I got involved with DR in July of this year and have been so impressed with its mission and impact on students.
I was able to interview students and their parents during DR's summer program to help collect testimonials and I heard such touching stories of how the program helped them. One student said "after this program I know I can go into 6th grade feeling confident in learning". A mother said "my daughter wants to work for NASA one day and this program did wonders for her math and science skills and her self-esteem". All after just 3 weeks!
The programs really make the subjects come to life for the students. Kids who weren't interested in learning become engaged and start loving it. Just wonderful!
Two of my sons did Dramatic Results and to see their excitement and the difference in their attitudes after the first day was amazing. Dramatic Results helps students develop critical thinking skills to push forward in all areas of life. As a dad it's been really special to see this change in them.
My daughter Emma participated in the Summer STEAM program this year. When we found out she would get to do this program we were jumping up and down! She is going into the GATE program at LBUSD and wants to work for NASA one day. This program was so helpful. She learned so much about math and science, grew in her confidence in learning, and was so excited to wake up early to participate every day. I've known Dramatic Results since its beginning. They have been changing lives for the better for 25 years! Their dedication, their vision, their excellence is amazing. For the last 5 years I have watched this agency with awe. The heart and soul that is Dramatic Results shows up on every child that participates in their programs. STEAM / Dramatic Results was a blessing not only for my son but for the family. I am extremely thankful for this program and words cannot explain the gratitude and honor I feel that Jaden was able to join this summer. Being able to see and experience everything he learned was beyond anything we could have asked for and frankly more than I could have afford. I first came across this program when my son came home with a basket he proudly made at school in 4th grade. I really wished everyone was aware of programs like this to encourage children to focus on education because educating them isn’t always reading a book it’s about the techniques and first hand experiences such has STEAM offered my son. I have been working with Dramatic Results as Operations Manager for nearly a year now and my love for the agency and its mission grows stronger every day. Having moved here from Shanghai, with a background in contemporary Chinese art production, my work with DR has been a new challenge. I was shocked to realize the constraints on teacher resources and the lack of opportunities for students in title 1 schools. Though most of my time is spent behind the scenes, I cherish the days I get to assist in class, whether that is at our 3-week Summer STEAM Institute, Math in a Basket program with 4th graders, or learning about pollination and ecosystems with our 2nd grade STEAM students in Walnut. A day spent with Dramatic Results is always great! This October we will celebrate 25 years of successful arts integration and social emotional learning; I look forward to supporting the agency over its next 25.
Dramatic Results has provided meaningful math experiences for Long Beach Unified School District students. Selected school sites and students were able to experience project based learning activities such as weaving baskets or making paper airplanes in a space built around teamwork and perseverance through problem solving. Students and classroom teachers benefited from interacting with the knowledgeable staff that planned motivating activities to support the grade level math content standards. The Dramatic Results staff was always open to collaboration with curriculum leaders, principals, and teachers to help plan STEM activities that enhance the district curriculum. Kudos to all they do for our students!
I've been working with Dramatic Results for a few years now and it has been amazing how much of an impact one organization can make. Dramatic Results students score higher in all areas when measured against the California standards. The students gain exposure to design thinking, modeling, scaling, modular shapes, crafting, design, and so much more based in STEAM. In our summer STEAM institute, I was able to mentor the students from an engineers prospective. Students went from fear of getting in the water to designing, building (out of duct tape and cardboard), and sail their own boats. Keep up the great work!
Dramatic Resultults created a 3 week summer program that is true inquiry based. Students explore a common topic in their unique ways with defined parameters, common instruction, language and opportunities to learn while expanding their base of knowledge. There are definite “correct” answers but the key is there is more than one answer that will work. I love learning that is an inch wide and a mile deep. A good life lesson that the journey is more important than getting to the destination although there are distinct destinations in this 3 week STEAM experience
I am a Job Coach for College Internship Program where I work with young adults who have ASD and other learning differences. My company has had a partnership with Dramatic Results for the past two years. Dramatic Results has given many of our students the opportunity to gain work experience. The staff is very understanding of our students and they go the extra mile to make them feel at home.

I have been a community volunteer for Dramatic Results for the last 2 years. The first year I helped in the classroom with the Math in a Basket program and last year I helped in the office. Working in the classroom with the kids was so enlightening, seeing the kids light up when we walked in to the room made my morning. The program is amazing how it integrated math and art, the kids were learning math skills while making art projects, how great is that...and they loved it! Being able to give these kids a special program like this is amazing and such a great asset to their education. I believe it builds their confidence in learning and gives them a vision and understanding of both math and art. I've been volunteering at Dramatic Resilts since last year and it's been such a great experience ! The people who work here are so nice and welcoming and the setting itself is so friendly . Everyone is always friendly and artistic and every time they tell me about their activities that they do with the kids makes me happy that they always find a way to help kids understand more of the subject. Volunteering with Dramatic Results has been a great opportunity for myself to not only offer my time and assistance to help expand a beneficial non-profit program into our public school systems, but it has allowed me to observe first-hand how dedicated the team and teaching artists are at Dramatic Results. Lessons are meticulously crafted through workshop sessions to help create a seamless dialogue between teaching artists, the students and their teachers.
The material itself is surprisingly well thought out to help bridge students' core education with art concepts such as the Math in a Basket program; the program focuses on understanding perimeter and area while inspiring students to celebrate important facets of their life represented by their choices of reed color used to help structure their basket. These sessions emphasize student education and artistic awareness but most importantly students are engaged on a level that transcends standard learning techniques which, from this volunteer's perspective, exceeds expectations.
I am a 4th grade teacher who just completed the Math in a Basket teacher training. This program is a wonderful and positive experience. The staff is very knowledgeable and very patient. It is very apparent that the teaching artists are very knowledgeable about the program, and their patience was extraordinary. During the week we learned the system, and I truly saw the entire process from beginning to end and I am beyond impressed. I have taught for 16 years and there are always students who struggle in math and trying to grasp the concepts. Math in a basket uses 4th grade core Math content that students will need to follow to be successful in their experience.
I can not begin to tell you how impressed I am with the leadership of this program. Christi Wilkins is such a positive leader. I truly believe that she has surrounded herself with a strong and capable team. Along with a wonderful team, Christi has a program that I believe all the students are going to absolutely love. I feel the program is challenging for kids who need the challenge, and it is a different way of learning and may reach the students who struggle with 4th grade concepts. I am blessed to be a part of this program, and look forward to a wonderful school year with Math in a Basket. I walked into the Dramatic Results office on Monday morning not understanding the program at all, and I walked out on Friday after an amazing training with arms full of baskets, and a true sense of accomplishment. Dramatic Results is a great community organization. I am a Career Coordinator for a support program for college students with learning differences. Some of our students interested in the fields of arts and/or education have volunteered with Dramatic Results. They have received the opportunity to work hands on in preparing materials and projects for the teaching artists and have gained a general understanding about job tasks and the working world. Samai, the Program Coordinator, is great at teaching our volunteers the various tasks and assignments. The staff at Dramatic Results are very creative and provide wonderful supplemental curriculum to local schools. Our students are proud to be volunteers for this organization!
I interned for Dramatic Results for over year and really got a chance to see this organization in action. Dramatic Results is truly a one of a kind organization that incorporates creativity and art into Math and Language Arts lesson plans. These lesson plans are taken to the classrooms of schools in low-income neighborhoods and serve as a resource for these students where they have the opportunity to develop their creativity while learning Math or Language Arts. Dramatic Results has been so successful because the board and staff work really hard and are very organized in the planning and executing process. Dramatic Results is a rich, unique, dedicated organization that should be admired for what they do and stand for.

I am interning with them, and I have learned many things and love going every time. Everyone works together and gets along so well which makes a great team. Since the first day I started interning I felt so welcomed and the staff has taught me many different things. I will continue interning because of the growth and development I have experienced. I am very appreciative for Dramatic Results and their programs to further educate and inspire students.
I have volunteered for Dramatic Results, and it is an extraordinary organization that allows students to learn and be creative. I feel very blessed to be part of an organization that is meaningful and helped me gain artful skills that I never knew I had. I would just like to thank Dramatic Results for letting me be part of their organization.
I am a volunteer at Dramatic Results and all I can say is it really fun! The people over there loves the skills I have and brought to them. They were excited to see me when I first show up. One thing I love about Dramatic Results is that it have to do with are and art is my type of cup of tea. I get to use all the skills I have and to show to others and help others. The people that works there are very kind and generous towards their volunteers. It feels like a second home to me now.
I’m a volunteer at Dramatic Results. The few times I’ve volunteered it has been a great experienced. I enjoy help others and at the same time in gaining in learning new things. I think this program helps a lot with children. Also because not only are they working with school subjects but as well they are learning how to create fun things for their school work.
I am a volunteer at Dramatic Results, and I enjoy being part of this community and want to continue being part of it. I have experienced new things and gainined new creative skills with my volunteering. Moreover, I think that Dramatic Results is a wonderful arts program, in which helps many children with math, and with their creativity skills, and it also gives the child the opportunity of being engaged in activities that are fun but also beneficial for their learning. Dramatic Results, has wonderful staff members, they work hard and this program does the best to give children hands on experiences.

How many times have you asked (about math), ‘where would I ever use this?’ Dramatic Results keeps students engaged in fun learning while introducing what might otherwise be difficult mathematic concepts. Students are excited about learning and eager to succeed. This program is pure genius! A few of the takeaways include a new skill, a deeper understanding of math and how to apply what you’ve learned to every daily life. Dramatic Results is helping students achieve against the odds…with measurable results.
This will be my fourth year volunteering in the classrooms with Dramatic Results. This program is a wonderful addition to the everyday school curriculum. The children are delighted and excited to see us in their classrooms and "learning through art".
My husband and I also donate monetarily because I feel this program is also another/different teaching tool. If these children don't learn the basic concepts of Math and English in elementary school, they will not make it in high school!
Dramatic Results has been a great program to build creative confidence not only in my students but in my ability to teach and create art. We have had teaching artists who have been patient and wonderful with our students and teachers. The program is well written and easy to build into our second grade curriculum. I have learned art techniques and lessons that I can continue to teach throughout the years because of the accessibility and how each lesson fits so well into our year.
After seeing Dramatic Results in action in elementary schools in Long Beach, I gladly joined the board. D.R. provides sophisticated, unique opportunities for children and educators to be engaged in hands on art experiences that deepen their ability to think and act critically and creatively in any context while at the same time developing positive personal relationship skills. In my work as an educator in schools throughout the United States, I have never seen better. Dramatic Results deserves our support.
Dramatic Results is a wonderful arts intergrated program. As a volunteer, I have seen first hand its positive influence on students' learning in the classroom. Dramatic Results is a modern way to teach children critical skills through practical and fun activities. U.S. students rank poorly in proficiency on both domestic and international math exams, a problem that could cost the country $75 trillion over 80 years, according to a new study.
U.S. students fall behind 31 countries in math proficiency and behind 16 countries in reading proficiency, according to the report released Wednesday, titled "Globally Challenged: Are U.S. Students Ready to Compete?"

No wonder we need the intiative, perseverance and courage of people like Christi Wilkins (Executive Director, Dramatic Results) to realize that there is a need for not acceptable but "dramatic results". Dramatic Results offers programs that clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of these programs in improving math skills for participating kids.
I have had the opportunity to personally work with the individuals at Dramatic Results and I have witnessed firsthand the passion, the preparation, and the strong desire to ensure that each individual in the organization is prepared and ready to make a difference in the lives of the children they encounter. Dramatic Results diligently works to ensure that every detail for their programs are perfect because they have a keen sense and understanding that what they do builds up and strengthens each child they help teach, and ultimately the community in which that child grows up in. I had the pleasure of joining a 2nd grade class and observing Dramatic Results. What a great morning! The kids were thoroughly involved, very attentive, and excited to do their work. I was amazed at their language skills as they shared their work with their partners and participated in class discussions. Dramatic Results has truly presented the kids with an opportunity to love learning.
Dramatic results is an unbelievable organization. They've helped students to become confident in their math and writing skills through art. They have made a tremendous work in providing different teaching methods for students to develop comprehension skills and critical thinking skills but at the same time accomplishing these skills by teaching through art. I've personally experienced the benefits of Dramatic Results in the testimonies of the teachers who have seen their students' improve in both math and communication skills because they had the chance to learn these subjects through the arts,thanks to this non-profit. Dramatic Results opens students' eyes and creative minds. I've heard their teachers describe their students' enthusiasm in being able to participate in Dramatic Results. These teachers have told stories of how students who had difficulties in learning before Dramatic Results afterwards love to learn. They explained that students who did not understand math and communication skills before, had "ahhah" moments while in Dramatic Results because they were "seeing " what they needed to learn through art. I've also personally listened to teachers in tears explaining the amazing results they saw in their students' boost in self esteem because they were fortunate to work with Dramatic Results. Dramatic Results is actually true to its name. The result in students is "Dramatically Wonderful"!
Chrisi Wilkins and Dramatic Results has had a huge impact in the schools where the program has been implemented. Every child should be able to have this experience experiencing art, learning -- and having fun in the process.
Their name saws it all. They have a rock solid evaluation component that has been in place for years. Kids do better in school after participating in this program. The Long Beach Unified School District even uses their limited dollars to provide this program to students that need more individualized attention and to have a hands on learning experience.
Dramatic Results takes a fundamentally crucial concept, that children learn by doing something they consider fun, and applies it with passion, professionalism and ingenuity -- and the results are indeed dramatic.
I've spoken with teachers and others involved with the program, especially with Math in a Basket. I have been extremely impressed with their caring, attentive, and creative approach to education for children from less advantaged backgrounds, although this approach would work equally well for kids anywhere. It involves artistic understanding and creativity, language skills, self-knowledge, social awareness, a cooperative attitude, and increased self-esteem -- all in the learning of math skills that many of these kids otherwise have a very hard time grasping!
I believe Dramatic Results deserves every bit of support they can get, so their wonderful programs can continue, expand, and touch more and more children with a love of learning.
Dramatic Results is a terrific organization that has a huge impact. It brings into the classroom what is often missing---hands-on, creative experiences that link learning to doing and make a long lasting impact. Over time, the organization has developed well-honed curriculua for students and for teacher training. Experience pays off....and the students really learn. I have worked with a number of supplemental programs to improve student performance and Dramatic Results did better than all the rest.
The second grade students at Stevenson have had the opportunity to convey their thoughts verbally and visually with the Write-on Arts program with Dramatic Results. Write-on Arts combines visual arts with language arts content standards. Every week, students have new opportunities to explore their own creativity through painting, drawing, puppets, and a variety of artful expressions that compliment their writing. The Dramatic Results teachers/artists consult with our classroom teachers to determine a writing focus and utilize thinking maps during lessons. With the first year of implementation, our second grade students have looked at exploration and identity, played with elements, expressed mood, created imaginary creatures out of foil, wrote and performed original plays, made and used puppets to run for President, created art maps of their home and community, and finished with an art critique of their work. Students also study artwork by several artists, and learn about the seven elements of art (line, shape, form, color, value, texture, and space). They use the language of the discipline of visual art to describe the artwork they study and to reflect upon their own artwork and that of their classmates. It is truly a privilege for our students to participate and we are seeing a, “Dramatic Result”, at Stevenson. Our Trimester 2 English Language Arts scores improved in second grade by 9%.

My experience with Dramatic Results has been amazing. The wonderful staff are dedicated to working with children and have done a great job of adapting their teaching styles to make sure their students understand all the material. Their hard work has made such a hug difference in the lives of all the children they have served.
This program has helped me grow so much as a person because it has showed me that giving that little extra attention to an individual child can better their self esteem as well as their overall performance. When I visited the classroom I was amazed by the wonderful, welcoming environment that the staff members have created. Many of the students I saw were amazed to learn new things about the world. They were allowed to interact with other students in order to conceptualize the topics they were being exposed to.
I can say the same about the program offices. The team is composed of great staff members who work hard to make sure the lessons are flawless. Their skills as a team help them organize creative projects that help students expand their knowledge about math and english. All staff members are open to suggestion and their main concern is to best serve their students. Such a team makes for a great program. I feel blessed to have been offered this experience where I can learn more about how to best help children exceed their potential. Thank you Dramatic Results! Dramatic Results is a wonderful hands-on approach to learning! CA State Content Standards are infused into art and drama to provide a rich literacy based lesson for our 2nd graders.
I am thrilled on Dramatic Results' success. Christi Wilkins, the board and many others who lead this important work for teachers and students in Long Beach that was ahead of its time, but whose time has come, deserves a standing ovation!

Who said teachers were wasting their professional development time basket weaving. They didn't know about Dramatic Results and its ability to show kids the meaning of fundamental math strategies as part of integrating arts in core curriculum, including English-language arts.
The category of 'previous funder' was not included in the choices for "Your Role", and that more accurately describes my role. As Vice President for the Long Beach Community Foundation, I give highest commendations to Dramatic Results, an organization to which we have awarded two grants in the past. Their work is outstanding in teaching children the fundamentals of math in ways that engage the students with hands-on activities, helping them to learn and retain what they are learning.
Our most recent grant was awarded through a multi-year transformational project known as the Connected Corridor. Dramatic Results received a grant to conduct "Math in a Basket" workshops for families at a local elementary school. Dramatic Results understands the importance of engaging parents and other family members in the learning process so teaching can continue in the home environment - a key factor in helping children excel in school.
Dramatic Results provides several effective programs to facilitate learning math - often a difficult subject for children. I observed the program in a 2nd grade classroom at Hudson Elementary and was impressed to see all the children engaged in the activity and demonstrating a good grasp of the concepts. Dramatic Results is professional, creative, and soundly based in the fundamentals of good teaching techniques. Our repeated funding of Dramatic Results is evidence of our confidence in the outstanding programs provided.
Dramatic Results, a non-profit art organization in Long Beach, is one of the few non- profits that continually seek to improve their curriculum by providing professional development to management, staff, and participating teachers. Art Education has drastically changed over the years since the California State Content Standards in the Visual and Performing Arts were adopted. Emphasis has moved away from the art product to the process of creating art. Students are taught vocabulary, techniques, art history and self - assessment. Dramatic Results embeds all the Strands of the Visual and Performing Content Standards into each unit they have developed for the various programs offered.
The staff includes an educational coordinator that is a credentialed art teacher with expertise in lesson design. They have developed integrated lessons based on the art standards plus those in, Math, Language Art, and Social Studies. A goal of Dramatic Results is to teach generalist teachers how to authentically start integrating the arts with other core subjects.
The organization works with school districts to tailor programs that fit the needs of the district, school, class, and student. The data gathered each year, from a strong outside evaluator, is used to guide and improve the curriculum, classroom management, supplies, and professional development.
It has been my pleasure to observe the teachers and students involved in different programs, provided by Dramatic Results. Everyone involved is growing artistically and personally! The best experience is to walk into a classroom where the students are participating in one of their programs. The students are on task, happy, and learning how to express themselves in a positive way.
As the art curriculum leader for LBUSD I have seen the wonderful impact that Dramatic Results has on students through arts learning for years. Dramatic Results stimulates students creativing through hands-on , art based, learning. Schools throughtout the district have shared that there is evidence connecting student learning in the arts to a wide spectrum of academic and social benefits.
I am especially excited about the new Write-On Arts program that combines visual and/or theatre arts with language arts to help students express themselves verbally and visually. Write-On Arts encourages students to keep journals to promote a life-long love of writing anfd the arts. What could be more important?

I coordinated a community project for 50 colleagues at Dramatic Results working with elementary school children on their math through basket weaving. The hands-on basket weaving excited the children about learning math. The participants were very impressed with the impact that art made on the children's learning experience; they talked about the experience for a long time.
As an arts administrator, I have seen Dramatic Results in action! The work they do ignites the imaginations of the kids and engages them in meaningful learning. The results speak for themselves- Dramatic Results is a thoughtfully planned and well executed learning tool.
I was introuced to Dramatic Results when I attended a silent auction. I met the artists, viewed their work and more importantly, was able to see the program at work. There were children in attendance applying the technique, and enjoying the experience!
I made my contribution and was glad I had attended. I went on to visit the webpage and read the mission statement and the difference Dramatic Results was making in my community.
I was asked to serve on the board and without hesitation said yes. I now have had the occassion to spend time with those that make it such a success and understand why our organization makes the impact it does within our community. I would encourange everyone who can help through time, donation or support to do so.
Dramatic Results has been a rewarding experience for my students. They work together on art projects but are also responsible to finish things on their own. They are learning math, but they are so into the art that they don't notice that math is part of their learning expereince. They are always excited and look forward to MIAB day. They have learned to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses, not only in art and math, but in cooperating with others. The instructors are helpful and encouraging. They provide positive feedback to all students, no matter their ability.
During my tenure as the LBUSD elementary mathematics advisor, I had the opportunity to observe and participate in the wonderful Math In A Basket Program at several of the Long Beach Unified schools. I also had numerous opportunities to participate in the hands-on teacher preparation trainings that Dramatic Results provided our regular classroom instructors.
I have been most favorably impressed with the program because it is aligned with the California mathematics grade level standards, and these standards are addressed at every appropriate stage of instruction, by the exemplary staff of teachers and para-educators working for the Dramatic Results program.
Most importantly I saw the positive effects of this program, both in terms of student self-esteem and academic achievement in mathematics. Students were thrilled to have the Dramatic Results educators visit their schools and provide additional mathematics/art experiences. The parents were amazed at the accomplishments of their children, as the students proudly shared their finished products both informally and formally (at the year end Dramatic Results celebration). Children were able to describe to their parents, using appropriate mathematics language, their artistic techniques while demonstrating the procedures they had utilized in creating their baskets.
The Math In a Basket Program has proven to be a wonderful adjunct to the LBUSD mathematics program, especially among disinterested and lower achieving math students, while also enriching and extending the mathematical knowledge of the higher math achievers.
This invaluable program not only prevents students from "giving up on math" but developes and promotes mathematical literacy among all students.
The Math In a Basket instruction within the Dramatic Results Program, is the kind of fun mathematical education that results in that glorious teachable moment when the "light comes on," and the students say, "Oh, now I get it!" as they make math connections that the children will remember and utilize throughout their educational careers.
Dramatic Results is a fantastic program! For over three years, the Math in a Basket program has been an important supplement to our math and art instructional program. The teaching artists have taught our students to understand mathematical concepts through engaging and exciting hands-on activities. Many thanks to the talented and caring Dramatic Results staff!
Dramatic Results is an awesome organization. They do wonderful work with elementary school students and help them learn math skills through the use of art. The basket making is a good example of this where students need to have the corret lengths of wicker to make the basket. Also, students are taught how to work through problems and challenges to follow through to create the basket.
Dramatic Results is a model to be emulated all across the country!
Even with funding in short supply, Dramatic Results has managed to serve the Long Beach School District through their amazing math and the arts program. It is often difficult to get administrators to see the arts as integral to other disciplines. Dramatic Results has been persistent in educating administrators, teachers, and the public about the dynamic and successful relationship between the two.
During my first year as Visual & Performing Arts Administrator for the Compton Unified School District, I called Dramatic Results (DR) and asked them to assist me in bringing innovative math instruction to the district. Christi Wilkins came out and told me about her programs and gave me two 12-week sections so that I could see the results. Well needless to say the results were outstanding and the district signed up for sections at every elementary school, which was also very successful.
As a result of this, DR included the district in a grant that they had received from the Department of Education which would be a three-year study of two schools. This grant enabled Dramatic Results to train teachers to deliver the innovative math instruction, which would result in building capacity at the sites. The schools and the students affected by the grant had great success. Great baskets and other artwork were made. Tests scores were higher and teachers had more good tools in their arsenal.
I applaud Christ and her staff and the work that they have done and are continuing to do in Los Angeles County.
I have known of Dramatic Results since its inception. The Executive Director, Christi Wilkins, is the heart and soul of this program. She has incredible vision. She is combining arts and math with quantifiable results. This is an incredible opportunity for the children benefiting from the programs offered by Dramatic Results. Many of the children come from at risk situations. The results can be seen not only in their grades, but their art projects and their smiling faces.
I have been a counselor at two schools that Dramatic Results has served: Signal Hill Elementary School and Hamilton Middle School, both in Long Beach.
The effect and positive results for the students was wonderful.
It gave them a very creative outlet for self-esteem building, problem solving, and grade improvement.
I have seen the program expand and continue to help raise grades and test scores for the students served.
