Mission: Congregations organized for prophetic engagement (cope) was started in 2000 with a mission to "train and develop the capacity of religious and community leaders to protect and revitalize the communities in which they live, work, and worhsip. " cope primarily organizes african american adults, ages 21 and over, through its engagement with local congregations, schools, and community-based organizations in san bernardion (sb) and riverside counties. As a multi-issue organization, cope's work addresses: educational inequity through various school reform efforts; poor quality health through policy and program that increases health access for vulnerable populations; criminal justice through recidivism reduction programming and criminal justice reform policymaking at the local and state level, and civic engagement to activate voters in the region.
Programs: Civic engagement and leadership development:*leadership training: cope trained over 100 parents and community members as grassroots community leaders and activated their civic engagement in various local and state efforts. *youth leadership: cope piloted a youth development program that had engaged over 30 students in series civic engagement and volunteerism activities. Education:*school funding: cope continues to engage parent and community stakeholders in monitoring and contributing to the local control formula funding and local control accountability plan in san bernardino city unified school district (sbcusd). *school climate: cope spearheaded a local coalition to win a major victory this year in sbcusd-- a new school citation policy eliminating issuing citations for certain disciplinary matters that previously transferred the incident to a county court for remediation, included hefty fines, and resulted in the inability to attain a driver's license, enlist in the military, or pursue certain types of jobs. This policy win intersects with the criminal justice system as it immediately impacts hundreds of black students and disrupts the region's prison pipeline to 7 prisons and 3 youth detention centers. *schools not prisons tour - san bernardino - cope and local partners joined a statewide campaign by convening a three-day tour featuring a community forum, artivism exhibit featuring local artists, and a concert tour in august 2016. *education equity: in partnership with education trust west, cope helped to organized the black minds matter rally in sacramento with nearly 1000 students elevate issues of educational equity among african american students. Health:*medi-cal: cope partnered with loma linda university to provide medi-cal enrollment support to vulnerable populations including homeless and formerly incarcerated in san bernardino county. *health for all: cope continues to work alongside local immigrant advocacy groups to advocate for indigent health services to address the needs of undocumented adults in san bernardino county. Criminal justice:*recidivism reduction: cope launched "life after incarceration," a six-session series to support successful reentry of formerly incarcerated individuals, utilize critical thinking and cultural affirmation as a tool for personal transformation, and help participants develop goals and a plan of action. The program served nearly 63 formerly incarcerated and high risk persons. *safety & justice: cope serves on bi-county safety & justice coalition that monitors county implementation of reentry policy reforms in san bernardino and riverside county.
